Attractions around Mandalay
Amarapura
As in 1857 all the important buildings of Amarapura had been transferred
to Mandalay, 12 kilometers to the Northeast, there is not much
left of the ancient royal town. You can still see the ruins
of four pagodas, which once defined the corners of the quadratic
palace grounds. Close to Amarapura is the Mahagandayon temple
area. It was built in the 50's of the 20th century and is architectonically
not particularly interesting. But Mahagandayon is the largest
Buddhist monastery in Myanmar accommodating more than 1,000
monks during the Buddhist Lent. About 700 monks reside in the
monastery all year round.
