Attractions around Mandalay
Pyin Oo Lwin
Pyin Oo Lwin, formerly Maymyo, about 67 kilometers east
of Mandalay, is one of the most unBurmese towns of Myanmar.
In that respect it is for Burmese a stranger attraction than for
Europeans. During the British colonial reign the town was built
on a plateau about 1,000 meters above sea level. Owing to its
prevalent cooler climate the town served the British as a refuge
from the summer's heat. Pyin Oo Lwin's summer villas were
built in typical English brick masonry style. Although parts of
Pyin Oo Lwin were severely damaged during World War II, several
of the old English houses were spared and still give the town
its own, unique atmosphere. The cooler climate of Pyin
Oo Lwin allows cultivation of European fruit and vegetables, which
today is Pyin Oo Lwin's most important business branch.
