Metro Manila has many museums, scattered all over the city. Intramuros which has resisted and survived destruction by wars and earthquakes can be considered one large museum with its many fine old buildings and spots of religious and national devotion.
The largest single museum of The Country is the huge National Museum near Rizal Park, in the Congress Building. The one containing the most treasures is probably the San Agustin Museum in Intramuros with all kinds of works of art from Spanish colonial time as well as Filipino classical paintings.
Exhibitions of contemporary art are held at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila and in the Cultural Center both on Roxas Blvd. Manila also has special museums like the Money Museum of the Central Bank.
The Ayala Museum in Makati recalls significant episodes of Philippine history. Several other museums show works of early Filipino artists and ethnological and prehistoric exhibits, or keep documents of national interest, such as the National Historical Institute. Many museums have their own library with a section on Filipiniana
The visitor who does not have time to visit the whole country, can make a trip to Nayong Filipino in Pasay City which has the most authentic exhibits on Philippine life and culture with its museum of ethnology and a wide range of true-to-life houses from various parts of The Country . It also has quite a number of diversions and entertainment throughout the year.
It is sometimes not possible to recognize a building as a museum or gallery. Therefore it is useful to know the exact address and telephone number.
Museums generally open at 9:00 and close at 17:00; some have a break between 12:00 and 13:00. Most are closed on Mondays.
