TAAL / LEMERY

Located about 130km (81mi) south of Manila and about 2.5 to 3 hrs by bus, signboard 'Lemery,' from Lawton or Taft Ave.

These two towns are separated by the Lemery river with Taal on the south bank. Taal is more quaint, quiet and historic than Lemery. The basilica of Taal, where one gets off the bus to go to the beaches, was originally built in 1575 and rebuilt in 1865 by the architect Luciano Oliver. There are also a number of older Spanish style homes in the town, and two memorials one for Marcela Mareno de Agoncillo (18591946) who made the first Filipino flag (sort of a Betsy Ross) and helped her husband in the revolt against Spain in 1898; and the other for Leon Apacible (18611901), the right hand man of General Miguel Malvar.

One block down from the church is the city market where one can get tricycles to the beaches (P 3 pp).

One can have a good inexpensive meal at the Taal Volcano Restaurant (although Taal Volcano is a long way from the City of Taal) down the hill a bit from the market.

There is a clean brown sand beach at Taal; the beach at Lemery has the reputation for not being the cleanest.

Taal Beaches Take buses with signboard Lemery, then tricycle; Taal beach is clean with brown sand.

Acc: R & L Resort (formerly Sea Breeze) Modest entrance fee. Salazar & Son Resort Modest entrance fee
