Cavite & Batangas Provinces

TAAL VOLCANO AND LAKE

From Tagaytay City, Cavite, a spectacular view unfolds on one of the most interesting volcanos in the world, Taal Volcano (in Batangas Province). In the large crater of an volcano, there is a lake, Lake Taal. And in the center of this lake, there is a smaller crater, formed during a more recent eruption, with another lake. The small volcano is cataloged as active since the last eruption was only some twenty years ago. As of JuneJuly 1991 it is being watched closely as there are tremors which indicate that an eruption may occur. The Manila Standard of July 29, 1991 reported that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said tremors continued at Taal and that temperatures in the main crater lake had increased from 29 degrees centigrade to 31. It is possible to make a tour to the small volcano in the lake. One has to take a jeepney from Tagaytay to Talisay. A special ride by jeepney costs about 200 pesos. At Talisay, one may make an arrangement with a boatman. The water is dilute sulfurous acid.

Public transport is often difficult especially the return trip.

"The condition of Taal volcano in Batangas is still abnormal and close watch is being maintained, Phivolcs said."

{insert Central Luzon B} Manila Bulletin, Thu. July 25, 1991 Meanwhile, Taal Volcano recorded only one highfrequency volcanic quake during the past 24 hours, volcanologists at the Pirapiraso monitoring station in Batangas City said." Manila Bulletin, Mon. June 24, 1991

"Taal Volcano registered 38 high frequency volcanic quakes yesterday followed by rambling sounds. Last Friday, it registered 41 quakes... Some 1,000 residents have moved to various centers in the municipalities of Balete, San Nicolas, Talisay and Laurel as a result of the activity of Taal volcano." Manila Bulleten, Mon. July 8, 1991 (Article by Roberth H. Reid Associated Press Writer)

"Taal, Batangas Mount Pinatubo's devastation and rumblings deep under Taal Volcano are raising anxiety among thousands of Filipinos who live on Taal, one of The Country 's most active volcanoes... Taal is a 23squarekilometer volcano island, with 47 craters and 35 cones, sitting in the middle of a 127squarekilometer lake, formed by prehistoric eruptions...

Taal has erupted 11 times during this centry, most recently in November 1977. The eruption of 1911 killed 1,334 people, including the entire population of the island, and rained ash down on Manila.

In 1754, the volcano erupted with such force that the explosions could be heard 400 kilometers to the north. Four major towns were buried undr the ash and debris.

Scientists say there is evidence that a prehistoric eruption of Taal hurled tons of debris past Manila and was responsible for a layer of volcanic materials beneath Quezon City, a suburb of the capital.

As a more recent reminder of Taal's potential devastation, huge chunks of cooled lava, its stones fused together like molten metal, are piled up along the southwestern shore, where they spilled from the volcano's Mount Tabaro crater during a 1969 eruption.

On March 12, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded an unusual series of volcanic earth tremors, prompting scientists to declare an alert, which remains in effect.

The tremors increased in frequency and intensity, until June 5, when 121 quakes were recorded within 24 hours. Although the number of quakes has decline to about 10 a day, the rate is considered abnormal." Manila Standard, Mon. July 15, 1991 (Article by Sinforoso Pasqua)

"Most restless today aside from Pinatubo is Mount Taal which is feared by Phivolcs as gearing up for another eruption. It last blew its top on Octorber 1977. Its earliest recoreded eruption was 1572.

Visiting French volcanology experts have predicted a Taal eruption in the next several months after studying records of its activity since last May. Taal became restless earlier than Pinatubo.

Condition of Taal as of early July was described by Phivolcs as 'abnormal.' The volcano, located in Batangas province of the Southern Tagalog region, is pictured as 'one of the lowest (400 meters above sea level) but among the deadliest in the world.'

Mount Pinatubo is bidding to earn the 'deadliest' description also. Phivolcs says it appears to be preparing to enter a fifth series of eruption, the earliest ones last June causing death and widespread destruction to public and private property in the Central Luzon region...

The 12 other active volcanoes in The Country as listed by Phivolcs in alphabetical order:

Babuyan Claro located among the Babuyan Island group of Cagayan province in the Cagayan Valley region. Standing 837 meters, its recorded eruptions are in 1860, 1917 and the latest, 1931.

Bulusan in Sorsogon, the Bicol region. Records show it has erupted frequently up to 1852 but has since lain dormant until it became active again on June 25, 1983. It is 1,559 meters above sea level.

Camiguin de Babuyanes whose home is in Camiguin, a province in the Northern Mindanao region. Standing at 712 meters, it last erupted in 1857.

Camiguin (also known as Vulcan) in Catarman, Camiguin. Last recorded eruption was during the 18711875 period.

Canlaon is the only active volcano in the Visayas. One of the tallest at 2,465 meters, it is located in Negros Oriental province of the Central Visayas region. Its last eruption was during JuneSeptember, 1978. It also erupted in 1969, 1933 and 1866.

Didicas belongs to the Batanes island group of Cagayan Valley region. Only 240 meters above sea level. It was formerly a submarine volcano before 1952. Its dome is now above water and it erupted in January 1978; March 1969, which was classified as 'Phreatic,' and in 1773.

HibokHibok which is also called Catarman. It stands in the Mambajao part of Camiguin province. Its most recent eruption was on Dec. 4 and 6, 1952. Earlier eruptions were in 1897 and during 184852.

Makaturing in Butig, Lanao del Sur province in the Central quiet for 120 years now since its last eruption in 1871. It also blew up in 1856 and 1840.

Mayon, the most majestic in appearance among all Philippine volcanoes, has Albay province in the Bicol region for its home. Its cone is almost perfect. Most recent eruption was in Septembr 1984. It is 2,462 meters tall. Its most violent and destructive eruption was in 1814, its ash and mudflows burying villages and towns around it. Other recorded eruptions are in 1978, 1968 and 1616.

Musuan (also called Calayo) in Valencia, Bukidnon province, Northern Mindanao. It came up with earthquake swarms in 1976 but did not erupt. With a height of 508 meters, it erupted in 1891, 1867 and 1866.

Ragang straddles Cotabato and Lanao del Sur provinces. The tallest among the active volcanoes at 2,813 meters, it erupted frequently during the 17651915 period with the last upheaval in 1916.

Smith is another of the Babuyan island group in Batanes. Explosive eruptions were in 1651,1652, 1907, 1917, 1919 and the latest in 1924."
