Beaches
Negombo
12 km south of Colombo the suburb of Mt. Lavinia is considered to have one of the best beaches close to any metropolis in the world. Its proximity to the capital makes it ideal as a getaway if constrained for time and it was popular even during colonial times. Lying along a windswept headland jutting out into the sea the beach has soft sand and a calm and clear sea. Its most famous land-mark is the Mt. Lavinia Hotel. A building riddled with legends and secret passages it was constructed as a residence for the British Governor Sir Edward Barnes, as far back as 1805. Scattered on the beach are little bathing huts which can be hired for the day. Refreshments are available from coconut and pineapple vendors. Other wares on offer on the beach are beads and shells.
