By Air

Colombo is the international gateway to Sri Lanka. The international airport at Katunayake is 32 km north-east of the city from where it is an hours drive to Fort. There are a number of helicopter and air taxi services operated by private firms to important domestic destinations from Colombo. By Rail

Colombo is the country’s rail network center and therefore connected to all stations on the Sri Lankan Railway. Three lines- the Main Line up to Badulla and Matale via Nanu Oya and Kandy, the KV Line upto Avissawella and the south west coastal line up to Matara originate here. The railway station at Fort is within easy walking distance from the city center. For more details see section on rail travel under general information.

By Road

Three A class Roads . the Al, A2 and the A4 - which are Sri Lanka’s main highways lead out of Colombo and distances on kilometer posts on these roads are actually distances from Colombo. Colombo is the center for Sri Lanka’s bus network. The three main bus stations are the Bastian Mawatha and Saunders Place for private buses and the CTB bus station on Olcott Mawatha for government run buses. All three are on the south edge of Pettah.
