Language

There are three official languages in Sri Lanka-Sinhala, Tamil and English. Broadly speaking, the first two are spoken by the corresponding ethnic groups. Sinhala is a language of Indo Aryan origin while Tamil is a Dravidian tongue. English is a link language and is widely spoken to varying degrees of profficiency at least in the main centers of the country. Place names and signboards on buses and trains are usually in all three languages.
