Polonnaruwa
History
In the 11th century AD Anuradhapura, ravaged repeatedly by the plundering armies of South India was finally abandoned for safer pastures. Thus the scene shifted to Polonnaruwa and the city climaxed to a brilliant though brief period of glory in the 12th century before it too succumbed to the relentless maraudings of South Indian invaders. Today’s ruins can almost wholly be ascribed to the reigns of two kings, Parakramabahu and Nissankamalla.
