Media / Radio

In April, 1910, wireless communication began in Thailand but the first radio voice broadcasting was started only in 1930. In February, 1931, the first radio broadcasting station was set up. All broadcasting was in Thai language and monopolized by the government.

At present, there are more than 200 radio broadcasting stations in Thailand, most of which are owned by the military.

A number of stations broadcast English language news (FM 97 Mhz, FM 104.5 Mhz and FM 107 Mhz) but they are not punctual, the selection of what is considered newsworthy is often dubious, the news are rather sketchy and they are read out with a Thai pronunciation. Who wants to stay informed on local, regional and world events should turn to the English language newspapers.

FM 104.5 Mhz and FM 107 Mhz broadcast international pop music for most of the evening, presented by various disc jockeys; some speak English as native language.
