YASOTHON

Yasothon, 531km (332mi) from Bangkok, is the capital of Yasothon Province which was separated from Ubon Ratchathani Province only in 1972. The principal festival of the town is Soeng Bung Fai, the Rocket Festival, which is held every year around mid-May.

That Kong Khao Noi

This ancient Khmer Chedi (pagoda) at Tat Thong village has an Buddha image made of bricks which is ritually bathed in the 5th lunar month (April) in the belief that without the ceremony there will be no rain.

Also at Tat Thong village, the Fine Arts Department in 1979 conducted excavations during which skeletons of pre-historic humans were discovered, as well as pottery items in the style of Ban Chiang (see entries on Udon Thani above). The area of the excavations has been transformed into a Pre-historical Park.

Ban Si Than

This village on Highway 202, 20km (13mi) from Yasothon, is famous for hand-made silk and cotton products.

Buddha Uthayan (Buddhist Park)

About 75km (47mi) from town in the Amnat Charoen district, is the vast Phra Mongkhon Ming Muang image. Surfaced with gold mosaic tiles, this Buddha image in Manwichai posture is surrounded by shrubs and bushes.
