Attractions around Kunming
Bamboo Temple
Judging by the material used for the most impressive sight at this temple,
it should have been named Clay Statues Temple. There are some 500
of them, all about life-size. They were built at the end of 19th
century by the Chinese sculptor Li Guangxiu and his students. In
a certain way, the figures remind of the work of Salvadore Dali.
Often, faces seem super realistic, depicted in such detail that they appear
as caricatures. But the figures are not only superrealistic, they also
are surrealistic.
There are Buddha images riding, in a standing position, all kinds
of animals: dogs, turtles, and even a shrimp. Selectively, limps are enlarged
beyond proportion. When Li Guangxiu created the figures, Chinese critics
were not ripe for this kind of progressive art. Li Guangxiu wasn't
very productive thereafter.
