Glutamine
Glutamine is less widely used as nutritional supplement than a number of
other amino acids, especially arginine. The primary benefits in taking
l-glutamine in dosages of up to 4 gram per day seems to be that it helps in
muscle recovery after exercise or during illness, as well as in wound
healing. Some health care practitioners claim that it dramatically improves
recovery after surgery.
Furthermore, this amino acid has been shown to support immune functions,
and it is therefore tried as an alleviating treatment in AIDS. In the
treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, glutamine supplementation has been shown to be helpful.
