Step 1: Make a Recording

There are a plethora of options to choose from when it comes to making a recording, but depending on your use case some applications may suit your needs better than others. For instance, if you’re in a lecture taking notes on your laptop, you can use your laptop’s microphone to record audio. If you’re doing a legal deposition, you might just want to pull out your phone real quick and hit record before you get started. Here are the best options on the market (and they’re all free):

1. Voice Memos (iOS, MacOS)

This one is a personal favorite and is used by professionals in all industries across the globe. It’s simple, it works, and it comes pre-installed on your Apple devices. Not an Apple user? No problem, let’s look at some other options...

1. Reverb (Web Browser)

Reverb is a web-based recording app. You simply click record, enable the site to access your microphone, and start recording to your heart’s content. From there you can export your audio to a variety of popular audio formats.

1. RecForgeII (Android)

Not quite as good as Voice Memos, but probably your best bet for a free and simple voice recording app on your Android device.

1. Audacity (MacOS, Windows, Linux)

Audacity is the OG free and open source digital audio workstation. It’s compatible across all the major operating systems and works like a champ. It could also help you get your feet wet if you want to get into music production.

Step 2: Export Your Recording

Once you have made your recording, you’ll want to export it to an audio file. You can export to any format you like. If you made the recording on your phone, you can move it to your desktop using email, Google Drive, or AirDrop. From there, be sure to save your file to a convenient location, like your desktop.

Step 3: Transcribe Your Recording Into Text

Now the fun part. The best option for this is Cockatoo. You can transcribe up to 100 hours of audio for free each month and it’s powered by state of the art machine learning. Simply sign in and start transcribing files for free! From the upload screen you can either drag and drop the audio file from your desktop to your browser or select the file location. Just wait a few seconds for your audio to process and….BOOM! An AI generated transcript of your audio will appear on your screen.

Step 4: Save Your Text

Now that you have your transcript, you can copy and paste the text from the browser into any document you’d like, whether you use Google Docs, Word, Pages, or even iCloud Notes. Now just kick back and relax and enjoy all the time and money you saved by not having to type out your own transcript. WE OUT HERE!!
