£1100 to paint a room? Was it worth it?

This is why I charged £1 ,100 to paint this room as a self -taught painter and decorator. And honestly, I nearly walked away from it.A follower reached out asking if I could paint their nursery on really short notice.Luckily, I had a job delayed, so I squeezed them in.They told me the walls were already sanded, just needed a bit of prep.Yeah, that wasn't exactly the case.

When I got there and had a proper look, I was shocked.Cracks everywhere.Peeling paint, loose plaster, and a panelled wall that was...Let's just say ambitious.I only had four days available, and realistically, this needed taking back to Brick. But then they told me they're adopting a baby, and he'd be arriving in about a week.

That one hit different, so I had to make it work. They already bought paint, but there was no way I could use that and put my name on it.So I used £250 worth of vouchers I had, and sorted all the paint for them free of charge.Didn't feel right stretching their budget with a baby on the way.First thing, I pulled all the sockets and switches off, and cleaned back all that built up paint around them.

Then, I went over the whole room with a sander.Next, to make the walls smooth again, I filled every imperfection I could find. The panelling needed saving as well.Nothing was lined up, the timber was rough, and the wall behind it was full of cracks.By the time I'm done, it'll look like a professional joiner did it.Two of the walls were full of cracks from movement, so I lined them with reinforced lining paper to prevent these from reappearing.

I went horizontal with 100cm wide paper to minimise the number of seams.Even the windowsill was in a rough state.I sanded it smooth and filled every imperfection I could find.I don't understand why decorators never caulk under the windowsills. It only takes a minute.I only filmed about 10 % of the prep, but the whole thing took nearly three days between caulking, filling, priming, and repeat.

People only see the great before and afters, but none of that would be possible without everything that happens before we even touch a brush.I'm not even going to bore you through the painting process.Let's just look at the results. From one of the worst rooms I've seen to this.Ready for their new baby.Do you think the finish was actually worth it?
