π€ AMAZING NEWS! 'Follow the Money All the Way to Mark Carney's Canada...'
He says what Canadians are not seeing is the pressure that the Trump administration is under from corporate leaders in the United States, who he says are heavily lobbying the White House for tariff relief because they're getting nailed by it.
Welcome to the Bill Kelly podcast, critical discussions in critical times. Here's your host, Bill Kelly.
Hey, welcome to another edition of the Bill Kelly podcast, critical discussions in these critical times.I'm your host, Bill Kelly.Good to have you with us today.Well, how about a little bit of truth?to counteract some of the trash talk and dribble that we're getting out of the White House and Washington in general over the last couple of days to do with the Canadian economy.I mean, when the narcissist in chief and his little lapdog, JD Vance, started going on Fox News and saying, oh, the Canadian economy is in the tank.
They're just terrible. They're last in the G7 and this, yada, yada, yada. And I've actually had people that have said, Bill, what's going on here?Is there any truth to that? No, there isn't.They're the usual lies you get from those guys.
So why don't we focus on that and give you some of that truth as opposed to some of the spin that both those guys have been laying on us in the last little while. And to do so, I want to call on some comments this past weekend from a couple of other Americans who really know what they're talking about, frankly. One of them is Matt Winkler. Now, Mr. Winkler is the editor -in -chief emeritus of the Bloomberg News, which you may or may not subscribe to.And it's a very well -established and very well -respected publication talking about what's going on in the business world, not just in the States, but, of course, worldwide. As a matter of fact, Mr. Winkler is one of the co -founders of Bloomberg.
And he was speaking on the podcast, the Bloomberg podcast over the weekend about the Canadian economy. Why?Well, because Trump and Vance was slamming the economy and saying that, you know, we're going to come back.bended knee and begging the United States for deals. And, you know, they're terrible. We're not getting any investment.
And it's all just total BS.So they asked Mr. Winkler to look into this.Of course, this is a guy who knows what's going on in the financial worlds. And what Matt Winkler had to say was rather, I think, enlightening, okay?I'm just going to give a piece of it.It was about a 45 -minute interview.
But there's some highlights here that he says the country's government, meaning Canada's government, is poised to attract record investment from outside its borders after foreigners poured 183 billion, with a B, 183 billion dollars into Canadian stocks and bonds in the last year.Winkler says that's thanks to a reasonable policy set up by Prime Minister Mark Carney.Of course, the Rhodes Scholar, former Bank of Canada governor, former Bank of England governor and former Bloomberg board chair, which, of course, is where I suppose these guys got to know each other. But he says what Carney has done here is attracting investors to Canada by being somebody the world knows very well. And this is something we've talked about on the podcast many times. The world economy, the banking economy, the financial world knows Mark Carney.
He's been in that world for many, many years and respected in that world in the various positions that he's held.So when he comes calling to whether it's to Great Britain or whether it's to the Far East, whatever the case might be, there's no introductions needed. They already know who this guy is.And just to that point, I think Winkler goes on to say in one of his many comments, he says, this is becoming one of the greatest economic periods in Canadian history, where if you follow the money, it's all leading to Canada.Don't hear that very often on the side of the border too, but here's a guy who's been analyzing this for some time.He goes on to say money is pouring into Canada like never before in the form of stocks, bonds, and other issues and investment.
Uh, since Mark Carney became prime minister in March of 2025, he says, Canada has outperformed the United States, outperformed Eurozone, and outperformed anywhere else in the world on 10 of the largest stock markets in the world. That's a story that you're not hearing from these guys that are trying to do what they can to try to, you know, make money.denigrate Canada and Canada's position in the world. The numbers tell a much different story. And I think that's something that I think we need to be talking about. And this is not to throw wind into the sails of the prime minister.
It's not what he's doing this for. He's trying to get Canada back on its feet and Canada get back on a reasonable trading situation with the United States and with the rest of the world. And he's getting it done. It's not just talk.I know some of the opposition parties here have been on his back. All he does is travel.
He comes back with deals. And that $183 billion, I think, is evidence of that. And that's something that, sadly, the Canadian media doesn't seem to want to latch on to.So when people like Matt Winkler start talking about this from Bloomberg, I thought, OK, that's at least got to bear some headline over the weekend. Some people have to talk about those numbers and our position relative to some of the other nations.I didn't see anything anywhere.
And I looked at most of the traditional news sites, not a word about this anywhere.which is unfortunate, because if you're going to talk about some of the negativity and some of the ridiculous comments from Poliev and some of the others, if you're looking to do a balanced newscast, and I'd like to think that's still what they're trying to do in the Canadian media, you've got to present the other side, too, about some of the good news. And you're never going to hear this from the opposition, right?I mean, as we've talked about, and I think other journalists and other podcasters, I think, are starting to clue into this, Poliev doesn't want Canada to win. That's pretty clear. He wants Carney to fail.
He wants to be able to say, I told you so.And it must drive him nuts to see these success stories and these numbers and know that it is starting to work. So, you know, I don't know why they put a microphone in front of this guy's face all the time, because all he's going to do is try to throw sand and dirt into the gears here so that Canada doesn't get it.So, you know, as if we're going to say, well, I guess we needed you after all.Never going to happen, Pierre, okay?Never going to happen.
Hey, we'll get you back to the podcast in just a couple of seconds.
If you're enjoying the show, and we certainly hope that you are, take a second, won't you, and help us out here. Please hit like, subscribe would certainly help. We'd love your support for that. And most importantly, share with family or friends or people you think might benefit from this, or maybe somebody you just want to get into a conversation with.We can help you with that too.Your support is always appreciated.
The other element to this too, because we've talked about this when it comes to economic projections, and these aren't just projections, by the way. Some of these numbers here that Winkler's talking about are already happening. This investment is already going on.You say, well, is it really working? Is it filtering down? It's one thing on the stock markets, but what about the guy down in Main Street?
What about the grocery prices? What about gasoline prices?Well, let me ask you, you know, well, we know gasoline prices have gone down over the last 10 days or so, and we'd like to think that they're going to continue to go down. But to give you that perspective, I want to focus on a report that came out from Statistics Canada late last week.Stats Canada, of course, reports what's going on with our economy, and they bottom line it.It's not just what's going on in the stock market.

Get started freeBecause frankly, most Canadians, according to the numbers, don't play the stock market, don't have a whole lot of money to invest. So, you know, sure, we know it's going to have some sort of an impact on the economy, but there's not going to be any huge benefit unless you've got a rather lucrative stock portfolio. But you are going to worry about things like job growth and cost of living, right? That's right into our wheelhouse.Well, Stats Canada reports Canada added 75 ,100 jobs in July.In one month, 75 ,000.
jobs, driving the unemployment rate down to 6 .4%, a two -year low, significantly outperforming expectations.See, what these guys had talked about, and these are all these financial analysts that are contributing to Stats Canada, they figured Summertime, maybe Canada would be lucky if it's, you know, if we have 16 ,000 new jobs, that's a pretty good month.Okay, well, it wasn't 16 ,000, it was 75 ,000 new jobs.Talk about outperforming the experts, right? The Bank of Canada does say, though, of course, the economy is still dealing with challenges posted by President Trump and the tariffs. And we'll talk about that in just a second here, because there's another angle to that.
But these are the encouraging numbers, and these are the ones that I think we need to pay attention to.Full -time employment increased by 38 ,600.Part -time employment rose by 36 ,600.Okay?Student employment also on the increase. These are all things that they said, well, you know, these are the barometers and our government's not performing.
Yeah, they are.be exceeding expectations.Public sector jobs fell by 14 ,000, but that's something we expected and something the Prime Minister was quite open about. One of the best ways to cut down on government expenses is staffing, and they are doing that too.But the surprise job growth highlights show economic resilience. And I think that's something that we as Canadians can and should be proud of.
We know that there's a lot of indecision. We know that what's going on in Washington is going to have an impact and is already having an impact, not just on gasoline prices, but on food food prices and everything else. But Canadians are sticking to it.You know, we're promising, hey, we're going to shop local and we're doing that. We're doing what we can for local economies. And these numbers from Stats Canada show that it's working.
You know, we're not on easy street.Nobody ever suggested we were going to be on easy street, but there's some very positive signs here. And I think we need to talk about those.a lot more than some people seem to want to in these days. And that's what we try to do on this podcast.I told you that from day one when we started this.
We want to speak truth here, OK?Not fiction, not bombast. And when you get positive news like this that shows that what we're doing here, and it's not just what the government's doing, but what you and I are doing as Canadians, whether it's buying local, whether it's not buying a product from a certain country south of the border, it helps.Every little bit helps. Now, I've mentioned that there's a couple of guys I wanted to talk about here to give us some sort of perspective on this. The other is Anthony Scaramucci, a name you may remember.
From the not too distant past, during the first Trump administration, when Trump was first elected and took office in 2017, Scaramucci became the communications director for the Trump White House. He lasted 10 days in the job. Now, this is a guy who has a very, very strong financial background and is obviously right of center when it comes to his policies. But after 10 days working for Trump, he quit.He said, this is crazy. This guy's nuts.
Totally. And he just divorced himself from the Trump administration. But he does have a solid background in finances. He was at Goldman Sachs for a while. And during that time, I guess he got to know Mark Carney because they both worked for the same company for a period of time.So he knows his stuff and has a lot of time for Carney.
And he's apparently going to be coming to Toronto to a big economic forum that's going to be happening in just a couple of weeks. And The Globe and Mail did a quick interview with Scaramucci, known as the Mooch by his friends, about just what's going on with Prime Minister Carney and with the government. And I think Scaramucci is well -placed to do this. He's known Carney for years, although they're not best buddies, but they know each other. And once in a blue moon, they may talk to each other. But there's, I think, at least a friendship there, if not a strong friendship.
And of course, Scaramucci knows all about Donald Trump, too.So Scaramucci spoke to the Globe and Mail last week.Negotiations had continued, as we mentioned here on the podcast. Our Canadian negotiating team are down in Washington. They're down there again today as we do this show to talk about this.He says there is a lot of pressure on Trump to do the taco thing.
That's, of course, Trump always chickens out.And Scaramucci is suggesting that, yeah, I know we're coming up on the deadline where he's going to impose these 50 percent tariffs, but Scaramucci seems to think that Trump will probably cave in on that. He's getting a lot of pressure, he goes on to say, from inside the United States. And so I think this will be a good outcome, and I think it's probably going to improve Carney's favorability. He says what Canadians are not seeing is the pressure that the Trump administration is under from corporate leaders in the United States, who he says are heavily lobbying the White House for tariff relief, because they're getting nailed by it.We all know, I mean, I think that, you know, the fallacy that tariffs are good for the economy is, I think, blown apart right now.
I mean, there are still some of those, you know, red -hatted mega people that are just going to buy into it no matter what he says. But it's hurting the U .S.economy.It's hurting businesses because the businesses are the ones that pay the tariff. It's not the government.
And of course, what do they do?They pass that cost on to the consumer. So whether you're buying lumber, whether you're buying a house, a car, groceries, it's the tariffs that are killing them. Now, I don't know why these guys aren't making more noise about it publicly, but they are making, according to Scaramucci, a lot of grief for Trump behind closed doors and saying, look, you're killing us here. And why is Trump paying attention to these guys?Well, they're the ones that give them the cash.
The donations, you know, there's an election coming up in a couple of years and there's a midterms coming up and they're going to go knocking on the doors and they're going to go talking to the General Motors guys and the wine industry and whomever else.So even though they may not criticize Trump publicly because they'd be afraid of what he might do to them with tariffs or whatever the situation might be, they are behind closed doors lobbying him according toScaramucci. And he says, you know, these are the guys that are donating millions of dollars to the president and to all his campaigns and all the people down the line in the Republican circles. So he says he's got to listen to them. You know, I'm not writing the check until you do something about my tariff situation.
And that's a pretty powerful message for the business leaders to be talking about. So Scaramucci goes on to say, He says, every time we've come up against this in the last 18 months, Trump has blinked and he's blinking for money reasons, Scaramucci says.He argues that when push comes to shove, Trump will not want to risk those lucrative relationships that he has built with CEOs who rely on the integrated North American economy. And this is something Prime Minister Carney has talked about. We've talked about this on our podcast, that there's all sorts of integration that has gone on for years between the Canadian and U .S.
economies. And Trump's trying to blow that up.And these guys, although they may not want to say it publicly, are telling Trump, you're hurting my business and don't come asking for money from me if you're going to hurt my business. So he figures, Scaramucci figures, that Trump is finally going to back down or at least delay what he's threatening to do right now.He says a likely scenario, according to Scaramucci, is there will be some sort of a trade deal between Canada and the U .S.
with carve -outs for some sectors and quotas for others. And that's something that was rumored over the weekend. We've talked about that, you know, there may be some relief for auto tariffs or steel tariffs or whatever the case might be.And in exchange, well, maybe, you know, we'll, in Ontario and the other provinces, maybe they'll put American liquor and wine back on the shelves. There could be other things too.that could be there, which, by the way, leads me to another point.

Get started freeThose negotiations are ongoing, okay? And that's with Greer and with our guys too, our team that's negotiating down there. And they say there is some progress being made.I'm not expecting a deal to be announced in the next couple of weeks.or two, but they're making some valuable progress. So this is what I wanted to do, is bring these facts, as opposed to the speculation, bring these to your attention, that yes, there are people in the American business community that truly want to see a deal with Canada, not just to punish Canada, as Trump seems to be wanting to do, not to ruin the auto industry in this country, but to have the same sort of relationship, mutually beneficial relationship, that's been going on for years and years and years.
And although Trump, of course, you know, rule one with Donald Trump is never admit defeat, he's going to try to find some way to spin this to say, ha ha, we got the best deal possible. And if that sounds vaguely familiar to you, that's exactly how he described the Kuzma deal that we're now renegotiating because he wanted to.He's the guy that negotiated the first one. He's the guy that signed it and called it the greatest trade deal in the history of the world. So, you know, that's the kind of spin.ignore that.
That's just white noise now.The fact is, let's look at the details of whatever deal is going to be coming down and just see if it's going to be good for Canada. And we already have that assurance from the Prime Minister that he's not signing anything until he can understand two things. It's the best possible deal and that you can hold the American government accountable.to its word. It's just something that is very much in question these days.
So between Scaramucci and also because of Winkler and his comments from Bloomberg, it looks as if not only is Mark Carney on the right track, but very much respected even in American business circles, and that bodes well for what's going to be happening when it comes to a deal, when that should finally happen. So as my colleague Paul Harvey, our late mentor and guy for many, many people in the talk radio business, used to do back in the old days after he did his show, which was really, okay, forget about all the spin from the White House. Here's what really happened. And he always ended the show.with, and now you have the rest of the story. And now so do we.
