Andrew Scheer Easily Sets Carney's MP STRAIGHT On LIVE TV!
I understand your party has criticized the government for the affordability crisis. There are some facts, though, that show things are doing better. In May, the country added 88 ,000 net new jobs, and overall GDP growth is forecast to pick up to 1 .3 % in this year, 2026, and 1 .8 % in 2027.So while you do criticize some of the things that the government has done, and those are valid, can you also admit that things aren't all bad?
Well, look, our point is that while liberals like to blame global factors, there's so much here at home that they control that are causing these problems.Every country in the G20 also faces U .S.tariffs and conflicts in the Middle East.None of them are in a recession other than Mark Carney's economy.Mexico is highly integrated in the U .
S.economy, very dependent on exports to the U .S.economy.They're not in a recession.Mark Carney's economy is in a recession.
And when we see jobs gains one month that don't even undo the job losses from the previous month, while we're grateful that some families saw relief with new hires, it's still not what Canadians deserve. And I think this is something that many Canadians are realizing now that being not quite as bad as Justin Trudeau, isn't good enough for Canadians. We're a G7 country. Most Canadians pay a significant portion of their income in taxes. They deserve the very best and this government isn't delivering that. We've got a government with a Minister of Finance, Minister Champagne, who made a promise three years ago to bring down grocery prices by that Thanksgiving.
Here we are in 2026 and this government is still recycling the same announcements about making groceries affordable.Prices keep going up in the grocery store, all directly related to inflationary spending, wasteful spending, big deficits. And so conservatives are saying we could do so much better as a country, but Mark Carney refuses to undo the bad liberal legislation.caused the hardship in the first place.
Ms. McPherson, I know that the NDP, especially at the end of this session, has been quite critical of how the government has used this majority to push through legislation. But when your party had the Supply and Conference Agreement with the Liberals, that was also done.So are you opposing it now because your party doesn't have an agreement that is helping to prop up this government?
No, I mean, I think for us, we look at what this government is doing. And I would say Mark Carney has shown himself to very much be a corporate conservative. You know, I think the policies that they're pushing through, that they're pushing through without adequate parliamentary oversight, without, you know, recognizing the importance of meaningful debate and, you know, bringing in witnesses at committee.I think the things that are getting pushed through are really dangerous. And many Canadians should be in are indication from this government that they are taking this wild swing to the right, and they are forgetting workers. They are forgetting working -class Canadians.
They are not making life more affordable for Canadians.People still can't afford their groceries. They still can't afford to fill up at the gas station. You know, those are the things the government's shown. They can push legislation through very easily, but they're not pushing forward legislation that makes life better for Canadians.
Mr. Maloney, how do you respond to that when you consider that yes, I think a lot of Canadians and observers will say that your government has been trying to push a number of things through, getting things through like the groceries and essentials benefit, which is essentiallyextension of the GST credit, but still feel like life is unaffordable for them. What's your pushback on that or what's your answer to that in terms of when Canadians can feel like life will be affordable again?
Great question, Mike. And the fact that I'm subject to criticism from both sides. And the city suggested maybe the government's on the right track after all.Ms. Scheer is talking about things that three years ago, we weren't involved in a trade war three years ago, circumstances have changed dramatically. In terms of pushing the legislation through, to Ms. McPherson's point, anybody's watching the House of Commons or paying attention to any of the committees that were dealing with these bills in the last few months. That's just the extensive amount of obstructions we were facing and obstacles.
I mean, just the Finance Committee, look at the Justice Committee.
It was - We're going to try and improve that connection while we can.Mr. Scheer, I wanted to talk a little bit about some of the criticism that you were leveling in your last answer, when you consider that there was a report put out by TD just this month, and they were talking about how although inflation shock will eat up disposable incomes, they also say, quote, of inflation.
temporary relief in the form of a top -up.But structurally, when the government keeps running these massive deficits that force the Bank of Canada to buy government bonds and pump more money into the economy as production goes down, that's what causes inflation. And so nothing that we've seen in the last few months under Mark Carney will actually undo those price increases.Nothing is going to stabilize in prices as long as he's running these massive deficits. And when you look at the things that we can control, I know Mr. Maloney was trying to So there's a big difference between three years ago and today with the trade issue with the United States. There's no doubt that the tariffs on the Canadian economy have an impact.
But what we can control here, nobody is suggesting that we can control Donald Trump or guarantee outcomes, but we can absolutely control our own policies. And Mark Carney has decided to keep the industrial carbon tax that American manufacturers do not have to pay, that American consumers don't have to pay That's because of domestic policies that Mark Carney can absolutely control. We basically have a fundamental difference.Conservatives believe that the best way to get our economy back on track and bring back the prosperity that we had just 10 years ago is to get government out of the way, undo all those bad liberal laws that caused all the problems in the first place.Mark Carney's approach is to bring even more bureaucracies and give himself even more control over parts of the economy, more red tape, more layers of regulations. So, that's why we're seeing job losses, that's why we're seeing price increases, that's why we're seeing Canada under Mark Carney is the
only country in the G20 in a recession.
I'll bring you back in in just a second, Ms. McPherson. But first, Mr. Scheer, I mean, I understand you're talking about all the bills that you want them to remove, especially in terms of carbon prices and that sort of thing. But this government has also moved forward with a memorandum of understanding with Alberta, paving the way for a new pipeline. Is that not something that they're doing to try and get things moving in this country?
I think you're being very optimistic by saying it's paving the way. It's a piece of paper.
It's a piece of paper. In fairness, the conservative premier, Danielle Smith, is also very optimistic about this.

Get started freeWell, I understand that the government of Alberta is going to be hopeful for anything that's not quite as bad as Justin Trudeau. But again, I don't think that's the bar that we should be celebrating.Being not quite as bad as Justin Trudeau is not what Mark Carney promised to be.He promised that he was the guy you hired in a crisis and he was some kind of a guru that could fix all this.He said he could move at unimaginable speeds.Well, that MOU was signed, what, nine months ago.
Still no shovels in the ground. No one's even ordered a shovel to pick it up.put in the crown. And in that MOU, he's forcing a big hike in the industrial carbon tax. He's forcing all kinds of new hoops and hurdles. Why not just, instead of a complicated MOU that increases taxes on Canadian workers, on Canadian companies, why not repeal the industrial carbon tax?
Why not repeal the no new pipeline laws? Why not bring investment back to Canada by getting government out of the way?Instead, Mark Carney is doubling down on this managed economy where he thinks he knows better than the free market. No government anywhere in the history of mankind knows more than the market, can plan better than free people making free decisions. That's why economies that have more freedom and more controlalways outperform those countries that have government controlling and layering on regulations.
That is Mark Carney's approach. So here we are a year later, prices are higher, housing starts are down, he still hasn't fixed the bail system, still has the industrial carbon tax chasing away investment.Nothing is getting better. And he promised to move at unimaginable speeds.I don't think people thought he meant unimaginably slow, but that's what it's turning out to be a year into his government.
OK, we do have Mr. Maloney back, but first I want to go to Ms. McPherson in terms of the response from the government and how they feel like they're trying to meet the moment. And now that they have their majority, which, you know, and they have that ability to move things through, do you not think that the government should be moving at this speed to try and meet that moment of helping Canadians?
Absolutely they should be moving fast. They should be doing things to help Canadians right now, but that's the thing. They're not.You know, I listened to Mr. Scheer and I think maybe he wasn't in the same House of Commons as I was.But we have watched this Prime Minister gut environmental protections, you know, gut rights for indigenous people across this country.to do talks about the grocery credit or the fuel.
Ask anyone. When I speak to people from coast to coast in this country, they are not super relieved at how inexpensive fuel is, at howThe thing that Albertans want to see is the Federation working for Albertans. And that means making sure that the federal government is protecting our Canada Health Act, making sure that the federal government is protecting our Canadian Pension Plan. You know, these are things that Mark Carney has abdicated responsibility on and has a majority and could do something about.
So Mr. Maloney, I'll end with you on this, but so what does that mean going forward for the next session and what your government will be doing once the next session starts when you consider the criticism that you've heard in this panel?
Well, look, there's always criticism.I'm waiting for the day that one of the opposition parties said, hey, you got that right.I mean, I guess they're doing what they think they're supposed to be doing.Mr. Scheer talks about the free market.I suppose he's drawing on all the private sector experience he has and his leader has.Look, in terms of running the economy, I have complete faith in the prime minister.
There is nobody better situated than that man right now.And Canadians are of that view.In terms of what Ms. McPherson said, look, Times are tough, yes.Gas prices are high. They're not as high as they were a few months ago.Relief is on the way.
Things are getting better. And the thing is, Canadians have confidence in this government, and there's good reason for that, because the measures that we introduced are the exact measures that are going to help in the short term, the medium term, and they're gonna set the table for the long -term growth that we need. And that's what we're gonna be talking about this summer, and that's the agenda we're gonna be advancing when we return in the fall.
Okay, we're gonna have to leave it there and I'd say have a great summer to all of you.But we've got one more week of power play.So I have a feeling we might be calling on you next week and I hope you do join us.James Maloney, Andrew Scheer and Heather McPherson, thank you so much.for being with us on Power.
