Aussie Store’s Sweet Revenge On Shoplifters After Losing Thousands | 10 News+
Shoplifting is on the rise, and one shop owner has become so sick of thieves, he's started shaming them on social media.
His security video is racking up millions of views online, but will it deter the brazen bandits?
First you see it, then you don't.This Sydney shop has seen many disappearing acts, with the store's stock playing a starring role, like this pink top heading out the door.
Old mum scoped out these sunnies straight off the bat, she's cruised in, she did the classic ease it into the sleeve, then pretends to look at a jumper.
Slides of hand with sunglasses, some even sacrificed lunch to swindle.
He's walked up to the mannequin and just right in front of the camera slotted that necklace straight into his bowl of soup.
Travis Hale and his wife run Locale, a small clothing shop, and say thieves have cost them tens of thousands of dollars.
They are stealing money from us.I find myself more disappointed than anything because you're like, I can't believe some of the things that humans do.
Travis believes technology is making the problem worse. He says shoplifters are identifying how much items are worth and where they're stocked by just uploading a photo.
There's someone who will say I'll give you a hundred bucks for it in cash and then they'll sell it online. There's a massive network of this and it's becoming more organised.
And Travis doesn't think people are nicking the high -end clothes because they're desperate. His shop is in one of Sydney's poshest postcodes.
I caught a woman stealing who was wearing a Rolex. You know, I've caught a woman stealing who had a Chanel handbag. You know, there are people who are just...
So Travis started plastering his security videos on social media.
She's carefully but stupidly in front of the camera taking a tank top off the hanger and she folds it up.
One video alone has been viewed over a million times.times on Instagram, with his robbery reels racking up nearly 5 million views.Remarkably, it's driving up traffic in -store too.
There is definitely a silver lining. The number of customers who come in here and they're like, oh, my God, you know, I just wanted to come and introduce myself and say hello and we love your store and we love what you're doing.
And he's refusing to take the videos down, despite a plea from one of the thieves.
It's like some bratty kid who's done something wrong who wants away from it, you know.I'm sorry, but the reason we want people to be accountable for their behaviour I love it.

Experts, though, warn shops need to be careful using social media to shame.
Seeing somebody put something in their bag doesn't mean that it's stashed. They need to go past the point of payment.
And lawyers say defamation laws could be in play too.
There isn't a way to release footage which identifies people so clearly without exposing yourself to risk.So it'd be a very calculated risk and a fight that you'd be willing to take on and pay for.To give you an idea of just how brazen some of these thieves are, steps away is the police station.
The front door of the police station looks into the front door of the shop. The driver says thieves still feel brave enough to parade past the store wearing stolen merchandise.
We caught a girl who stole a ring off us on camera and I was out the front of the shop a day later and she walked past to get sushi and she had the ring on.
Like many others, Travis gave her the chance to pay up before he went to police. An offer she accepted.
My wife even said to her, why did you steal it?And she's like, I was just having a bad day.I wanted to make myself feel better.
Cameras alone may not deter thieves.Travis hopes the threat of going viral will.
Posting a video of shoplifters on social media is this.putting a photo of them on the window of the 21st century.
