Oi, punters.Somewhere near you, right now, they're building a box.No windows, hums 24 -7, chews power by the suburb, drinks water by the Olympic swimming pool.And not one person who lives near them ever asked for it.I'm talking about data centers.That's right, I'm talking about data centers, the engine of the AI boom.

And they are landing here in Australia.Some are already here and there are a hell of a lot more on the way.And here's the thing, the biggest corporations in history of all of the world have taken a good long look at Australia and they like what they see.Look at this.Australia is set to get more AI data centers.Tech giants ready to fight in Australia's 100 billion data center war.

A once -in -a -generation infrastructure land grab.War?Land grab?Bloody hell.Look, punters, maybe this will be great.Maybe.

A hundred billion dollars of foreign money rolls into the country and we get rich.But I've got this nagging feeling.I've seen this movie before.Because the last time the biggest corporations on earth looked at Australia and liked what they saw, it was our gas.And we handed most of it to them for free.And you and me are still paying the price.

So punters, what happens next with data centers could go one of two ways.It could make us rich or it could It could cost us billions.And the only thing standing between us and another gas -sized screwjob are the politicians we've put in charge of dealing with big tech.So can the people we elected stand up to the most powerful corporations in history and get us a good deal?Well, I did some digging.And I did not like what I found.

Before I show you what I found, you need to understand what's actually on the table here.Because these companies aren't crossing the planet and spending a hundred billion dollars out of love for Australia.They want things.Specific things.Here's a list.They want power.

Tons of it.They want water.Millions of litres.Cheap land.As few rules as possible.And more than anything, please more than anything, they want to pay as little tax as they can get away with.

Ideally none.Here's what corporations don't want you to know.

Every single one of those things has a cost.And these corporations are going to war to make sure that that cost lands on you.Because the more they can pass those costs onto we regular punters, the bigger the profits they can ship back overseas to their lovely shareholders.They will fight for every dollar, every tax break, every loophole.Because that's exactly what they're built to do.They are bringing everything they've got to the table.

We better hope we've got someone on our side who's up to the challenge.Someone who'll fight as hard for us as these corporations are fighting for their overseas shareholders.You know who we got in our corner?Meet this bloke.Labor MP Andrew Charlton.He comes with a bit of hype.

Look at this.Star Cabinet Minister.Labor prodigy.He's tipped to be the future treasurer.Oh, and side note.So this is the bloke who'll be on our side when big tech comes knocking.

So how's he doing so far?Well here's a clip of him on Sky News being asked about cryptocurrency.

Same bloke, three years later.Cryptocurrency is no longer just an emerging technology.It's an asset that is valued by millions of Australians.It represents a new frontier in finance, enabling innovation, efficiency and opportunity in ways we could not have imagined just a decade ago.

Wow, quite the turnaround.Either crypto changed or Andrew did.And I really wanted to know which.Turns out he was an economist and a pretty successful one at that.He built his own consulting firm called Alphabet.Now, it's basically a bunch of economists and data nerds that government and big corporations pay money to in order to write reports.

Remember that.In 2020, one of Australia's biggest consultancy firms on the planet, Accenture, buys Alpha Beta and pays Charlton a report of $35 million, which I guess he turned into this very nice house.Well played.So by the time you see him in that clip on Skype, news in 2021, Trash and Crypto, he's fresh off that $35 million payout.Let's watch the rest of that clip now.

Bitcoin than it did to power the whole of Argentina.It's highly volatile and surely we can't be introducing a new global currency so energy intensive it could destroy the planet.

Well he did not hold back.I counted 11 separate reasons to stay well away from crypto, which is what makes what happened next so weird, because about a year later, all of that vanishes.In 2022, Charlton's now a top dog at Accenture, the firm that bought his firm, and his name turns up on on a crypto report.But this time, it's not rubbishing crypto.It's a full -blown endorsement.This paper doesn't mention anything about his previous revelations with crypto.

It could destroy the planet.Oh, hang on.It does say one thing on the environment here.It says, cryptos becoming greener.Okay.So, the next question is, who paid for this report?

Is it just me or is it a little bit creepy how the second you think about something, your phone is already showing you an ad for it?Like, you didn't search for it.You didn't type it.It just knows.Well, that's becauseeverything you do online gets watched, packaged up, and flogged off to whoever is buying, which is why every website now seems to want your face, or your ID, or your phone number just to let you in.

Remember that name.Our boy, Andrew Charlton, has gone from crypto's biggest critic to co -writing the tech lobby's crypto puff piece on behalf of the tech lobby run by his old business partner.Tracking?Because after all this, Charlton levels up.In 2022, he becomes a politician and quickly picks up a side gig as co -chair of Parliamentary Friends of Blockchain, which is a little club inside parliament where the crypto industry andpoliticians get like Oh, and it's run by the crypto lobby.

And now this is where the story gets all too familiar.During his re -election campaign, a crypto exchange called Swiftex, one of the companies mentioned in the report he wrote, gives the election campaign of Andrew Charlton personally $50 ,000.And one month later, Charlton is made assistant treasurer for the digital economy.

I mean, wow, what are the odds?

SWIFTX were not the only ones throwing cash at our politicians.Both Lib and Labor copped donations from Coinbase, Immutable, WeMoney.The full crypto bro mafia poured nearly half a million dollars into the two major parties in the lead up to this election.The Fin Review called it, Game Time for Crypto Influence Operation.Influence Operation is right because that same crypto lobby came up with the genius plan to charge crypto companies 65 grand ahead for structured access to our politicians with Andrew Charlton named as one of their parliamentary champions.Crypto bros, remember, the trick to buying access in Australia is generally like, I don't know, don't say it out loud.

And to help their here's -why -we -shouldn't -pay -tax -pitch -to -our -government, OpenAI hired a consulting firm.This one is called...and was co -founded by a bloke named Adam Triggs, which, I don't know, means nothing, until you discover he used to work at Alpha Beta.That's right, with current tech minister, our boy, Andrew Charlton.Oh, it gets better.Before Adam Triggs was a consultant, he also used to work in politics, advising another big dog labor minister, this one named Andrew Lee.

Maybe you've heard of it.

Do we really want people to be speculating rather than backing Australian companies?Oh, and then there's this other Mandala bloke, Tom McMahon, who also used to work at, you guessed it, Alpha Beta, who, oh my goodness, also happened to be Andrew Lee's chief of staff.Sorry, I'm confused.Was that before or after he also worked at the tech council with Kate Pounder?Huh, are you starting to see why they call it a revolving door yet?Oh, I'm not done.

When the OpenAI nerds rocked up to Australia to pitch us why we should let them not pay tax, I guess, they needed someone to show them around, you know, to arrange some meetings.And that someone was Andrew Charlton's ex -colleague and current tech lobbyist, Kate Pounder, who through some magical coincidence managed to score a private meeting between OpenAI and tech lawmakers Andrew Charlton and Andrew Lee.Wow.I mean, personally, I just hope they had enough time to talk AI because it sounds like they probably had a lot to catch up on.from working together all the time.Punters, after hearing all of those connections, how confident are you that Australia's gonna get a good deal out of those data centers?

Because when our side of the table is swapping seats with their side of the table, we don't stand a chance.And punters, let me be clear, this isn'twe got screwed by big gas.It's how we keep getting screwed by gambling, by mining, by damn near every foreign corporation that's ever looked at Australia and liked what they saw.Because punters, this is what they like.This cozy little system.

When big tech wants something in this country, they don't have to bribe anyone.They don't have to break a single law.They just hire the right firm, stacked with the right colleagues and bring in the right liaison.Someone who, I don't know, used to share an office with the minister who makes the decisions and the rules and the door keeps swinging around and around and around.Punters, that's access.The kind of access that you and I will never get.
