BREAKING: Australian Broadcasting Legend Derryn Hinch Dies Aged 82 | 10 News

We begin with breaking news.Legendary Australian broadcaster and former politician Derren Hinch has died.Known as the human headline for his habit of courting controversy, he worked across a host of radio and television networks before being elected to the Senate in 2016.In later years, he faced numerous health battles, including having a liver transplant.He was 82.

He was born in New Zealand, but Derren Hinch became one of the most recognised voices in Australia.His career began in newspapers, but he was destined for broadcast media.Hinch's self -titled television show launched in 1988 and took aim at everyone and everything.He earned the nickname The Human Headline and then became a talkback radio star.His determination to publicly name child sex offenders earned him 12 days in prison in 1987 and another 5 months of home detention in 2011.

In 2014 he spent 50 days in jail for breaching a suppression order on Jill Maher's killer.Amongst it all, Hinch's life was peppered with romances.He married five times, two of those were to actress Jackie Weaver.

Hinch was a heavy drinker.drinker which eventually led to liver cancer.In 2010 he revealed live on his 3AW show that he was terminal.

He received a transplant at Melbourne's Austin Hospital in 2011.

And returned to the airwaves.

It's great to be back here on 3AW.It's even better to be alive.

But pursuing a passion for politics, he founded the Justice Party and was elected to the Senate in 2016.

I am humbled and I'm honoured, even a bit pinch me gobsmacked.

Hinch dissolved the party in 2023 after a series of poor election results.In recent years, he battled skin cancer, which involved multiple rounds of radiation.He also underwent a procedure for an irregular heartbeat.For the last time, Thank your mother for the rabbits.But as the broadcaster himself would say, that's life.Olivia Blunden, 10 News.
