What really happened in Ceuta?The media has feasted on images of immigrants apparently storming the ramparts of Europe.But scenes like this don't occur spontaneously.They're created.The question is by who?And why?

Western media had little interest in finding out.Where it did do deep dives, one key element was firmly off limits.Morocco's relationship with the US and its Middle Eastern proxy, Israel, without which this story cannot be understood.Firstly, the facts.Ceuta, which was invaded by more than 50 ,000 would -be migrants, is not in Europe.It's a Spanish enclave in Morocco, in North Africa.

Migrants arriving in Ceuta do not have the right to enter Spain, and it's excluded from the EU's Schengen Free Movement Agreement.The vast majority of the migrants returned peacefully to Morocco within 48 hours.That did not prevent hysteria on the racist right.

60 ,000 illegal migrants forcing their way into Spain, storming fences, overwhelming the police, turning ports and border towns into absolute chaos.And many of them may be heading to Britain.

Critics pointed to a July the 8th ruling by the Spanish Supreme Court that migrants arriving by sea in Ceuta could not be forced back immediately to Morocco as the trigger for the influx.But reports quickly emerged of Moroccan border guards opening the gates and standing aside to let migrants through.Go, go, go, run now, run into Spain, Moroccan police reportedly told them.Encouraging a flood of migrants is a tactic the Moroccans have used before and they want to pressure the Spanish, most recently in 2021, though the numbers then were smaller.The Western Mediterranean is littered with colonial hangovers.We the British still control Gibraltar.

a relic of the days when we felt the Royal Navy needed to hold the keys to the Mediterranean.Ceuta is one of two enclaves the Spanish still control in its former colony, Morocco.Morocco, in turn, still controls the sparsely populated Western Sahara, where it confronts a separatist movement backed by its neighbour and regional rival, Algeria.It was Spain's decision to allow a separatist leader to receive medical treatment in Spain that prompted the Moroccans to open the gates to Ceuta in 2021.Morocco signed a treaty of friendship with the US in 1786 to battle the Barbary pirates.It remains America's oldest ally.

Morocco has always been the most pro -Israeli of all the Arab states.perhaps because it's the furthest away.Although Morocco has a parliament, ultimate power resides with King Mohammed VI.In 2020, he signed the Abraham Accords, along with the UAE, Bahrain and Sudan, normalising relations with Israel.In return, the US recognised Morocco's claim to Western Sahara.The Israelis following suit.

three years later.At the start of this year, Morocco signed a joint military action plan with the Israelis.The U .S.already supplies Morocco with more than $40 million a year in aid.And in June, the U .

S.National Defense Authorization Act directed the Pentagon to develop a 10 -year plan to convert Morocco into a key U .S.military ally.In short, it's hard to overstate how closely tied the Moroccan government is to Israel and the U .S.

The new highway running along Morocco's Atlantic coast is even called the Donald Trump Highway.Equally, it's hard to overstate how much the Israelis and the Americans dislike the left -of -centre government of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

Sánchez is Israel's fiercest critic among EU leaders.

He's refused to increase Spain's military budget to the levels Trump demanded, or to allow the Americans to use Spanish bases to bomb Iran.In an eye -catching report in March, the US House Subcommittee on National Security noted that the Spanish -administered cities of Ceuta and Melilla are located in Moroccan territory, and said it supported efforts by the Secretary of State to encourage diplomatic engagement on their future status.Days later, the committee chairman, Mario Diaz -Balart, a key ally of Marco Rubio.told a Spanish newspaper, Ceuta and Melilla are not in the geographic territory of Spain.Their future should be established, negotiated, and discussed.In diplomatic language, this is seismic, representing a shift away from traditional automatic US support for a NATO ally.

One leading US -based pro -Israeli think tank recently encouraged the Moroccans simply to seize the two Spanish enclaves.On social media, some have been quick to portray events in Ceuta as an Israeli plot.Let's be clear, there's no evidence as yet that events in Ceuta were instigated in any way by either the Israelis or the Americans.It's possible they were triggered by a visit earlier this month by Pedro Sanchez to Morocco's rival, Algeria, to discuss natural gas imports.If that is the case, it would represent an extraordinary flexing of diplomatic muscle by Morocco.Spain supports Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara and is simply trying to maintain good relations across North Africa.

If that's not good enough for the Moroccans, it shows how emboldened they feel by their ties to the US and Israel.Certainly, both countries react with what can only be described as glee to events in Ceuta.The Israelis reveled in what they see as Spanish hypocrisy.Spain never misses an opportunity to lecture Israel, wrote Danny Danon, the Israeli ambassador to the UN.Maybe before it continues lecturing us, it's time it explained to the world why it still maintains colonial enclaves in Africa.For Trump, SOTA was a salutary lesson in the dangers of what he perceives as liberal immigration policies.

You know, I saw Spain yesterday and I watched the catastrophe that took place.It looks like an invasion of a country by hundreds of thousands of people.And that same thing is going to happen to us if the Republicans don't get on board.except worse, much bigger.

The EU showed a conspicuous lack of unity.Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Maloney shamelessly exploited the crisis to fend off an electoral challenge from forces even more right wing than her, absurdly suspending the Schengen Agreement with Spain, despite the fact the two countries don't share a border.and in Ceuta itself the far -right Spanish group Nucleo Nacional attempted to exacerbate tensions but were prevented from marching by local people and had to be protected by the police.For all the attempts to exploit it, Souta was not an immigration story.It was a confected, concocted crisis created for the cameras.The real victims were the would -be migrants, callously exploited by a Moroccan government that knew thousands would flock to the fence precisely because their prospects under the corrupt, sclerotic rule of King Mohammed VI are so bleak.

More than 70 died, crushed or drowned.Within Ceuta, a city of just 80 ,000 people, there was remarkably little violence, despite the sudden presence of tens of thousands of hungry, thirsty people confronted with closed shops.Instead, they meekly returned home.The crisis was over almost as soon as it began, but it had served its purpose.It embarrassed an independent -minded left -wing government, and it created images that will be regurgitated by MAGA, by the racist right in Europe and by Israel, which loves to portray itself as Europe's bulwark against the Muslim hordes for years to come.At Double Down News, we will continue to hold the rich, the powerful and governments to account.
