Carney's GENIUS BRIDGE PLAN Makes Trump Look STUPID

Donald Trump thought he had forced Canada into another submission.He delayed the opening of Gordie Howe Bridge.He demanded changes to an agreement that had already been negotiated.And when a new deal was finally announced, the headlines made it sound like Trump had won.50 % of the profits.It sounded like a victory for Washington, a major setback for Mark Carney.

It was portrayed as an example of Canada giving in.But then people started reading the details.And suddenly, the entire story looked very different.Trump was made to look like he had won.But it was yet another classic story of Carney being an absolute genius.Because according to reports, the financial impact on Canada could be very, very small.

Why?Because the bridge first has to recover the billions of dollars spent building it before meaningful profits exist to share.If that assessment proves correct, then this wasn't about giving away billions.It was about getting the bridge open.Trump gets to tell his supporters he secured another concession.Canada gets the bridge it built.

Trade resumes.Businesses move forward.Let's break down why this agreement is generating so much debate.

We begin with the opening date for that long -awaited Canada -U .S.bridge.After a month of delays and threats from U .S.President Donald Trump, the Gordie Howe International Bridge is finally set to open on July 27th, if everything goes to plan.

The Canadian -funded $6 .4 billion bridge will connect Windsor and Detroit.And the U .S.agreed to allow the bridge to open after striking a new deal with Canada that 50 % of the total profits will now go to a U .S.development fund for a period of 15 years starting when the bridge opens.

I'm joined now by Windsor Mayor Drew Dilken.Mayor Dilkens, good to see you again, sir.Thanks for being here today.My pleasure, David.What do you make of this?It looks like yet another concession from Canada to the United States because the U .

S.doesn't live up to signed agreements, but we don't know the dollar value or exactly how big it is.What's your assessment on this?

Well, my assessment is that this is a step down for Donald Trump.It allows him to take a win, uh, with very little risk for Canada.I suspect for the first 15 years, heck for the first 30 years, there's going to be very little profit as the vast majority of toll revenue goes to offset the cost of construction, which was the original deal with Michigan to begin with.Uh, and so if there's no money to put, to take 50 % and put into an economic development fund, well, political talk, the president wins for, for accepting this deal and making it look like he had a win.and the cost to us as Canadians is likely going to be very, very small.

Very, very small.Let's start with how we got here.The Gordie Howe International Bridge was supposed to open months ago.Canada had financed the project.Construction was complete.Communities on both sides of the border were preparing for one of the most important trade corridors in North America.

Then everything stopped.It was reported that the competitor Ambassador Bridge donated large sums of money to Trump in order to stop the opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge.The opening was delayed after the Trump administration sought changes before allowing the bridge to begin operations.Eventually, a new agreement was announced and the bridge was scheduled to open on July 27.At first glance, it looked like Canada had been forced into making a concession.This is where the story becomes much more interesting.

The agreement states that the United States will receive 50 % of the bridge's profits for a period of 15 years.Notice the words.It does not say revenue.It does not say toll collections.It says profits.And that's an important distinction.

Many analysts argue that for many years, there may be little profit because toll revenue is expected to be used first to recover the enormous cost of constructing the bridge.something analysts say was already part of the original arrangement.If that's how it unfolds, then the agreement may allow Trump to present it as a victory while having only a limited financial impact on Canada during those early years.That's why this debate has become so fascinating.

I think Gordie Howe could take 60 to 70 percent of traffic that's currently crossing at the Ambassador Bridge, but until you actually open the bridge and see where the traffic migrates, you actually won't know.And so, again, the original agreement is that the toll revenue would be used to offset the cost of construction.After the costs of construction were repaid through the collection of tolls, then Michigan and Canada would share the proceeds equally in perpetuity.I don't think there's going to be much to put in Donald Trump's economic development pot for the first 15 years.But again, we won't know until traffic starts crossing the bridge and they start generating some revenue.

Politics often isn't just about the numbers.It's about the narrative.Trump can tell Americans that he negotiated a better deal.He can point to the agreement and say he extracted concessions.Meanwhile, the reality is far away from what he will sell.Canada will get what it wanted from the beginning.

The bridge opens, cross -border trade moves forward, manufacturers regain certainty, and the project finally begins serving the businesses and workers it was built for.Sometimes both governments can claimsuccess, even if only one is winning.

But then there's also giving the U .S.some sort of veto and consultation role on any toll changes greater than 10 percent in either direction on the new bridge.I mean, what do you make of that level of engagement that they're giving the Trump administration here?

I think that's a free give.I mean, I think that means absolutely nothing.And I say that as the chair of the Windsor Detroit Tunnel, the city of Windsor is a half owner in the tunnel that connects Windsor and Detroit.And so I understand toll increases.We understand the operation.It's unusual to say you're going to increase costs more than 10 % anyway at any given time.

And so I think that's a give with no risk at all on the Canadian side.Again, Donald Trump can take a win looking like he got a deal from Mark Carney.But operationally, I think it means almost nothing.

So you think this is a lot of just free give.Do you think this is why maybe the Carney administration, the Carney government, excuse me, they're not being completely forthcoming with some of the details?Maybe the dollar amounts are actually so small in the big scheme of things, they don't want the narrative to be that Trump opened a bridge for nothing.Do you think there's a bit of self -defense being played?

Well, there's no doubt.And I think, you know, at the end of the day, when you read between the lines here, when you look at the language, uh, you know, in the agreements in the press conference, uh, or the press release rather from the prime minister's office and Donald Trump's truth social posts, you know, there's some well -crafted political language here that I think knowing Donald Trump, uh, and the way he operates, I think it's fair to say he needed a way to be able to get a win.He got a win from Canada, but as a, as a Canadian and as a taxpayer in Canada, uh, I'm not worried about, The amount that he's getting.

This isn't just another bridge.It's one of the most important trade links between Canada and the United States.Every day, billions of dollars worth of goods move across the border.The auto industry depends on reliable crossings.Supply chains depend on predictable transportation.Mayor Dilkens described the Gordie Howe Bridge as the most technologically advanced land crossing between the two countries and argued it will reduce travel times and improve efficiency for freight moving between Windsor and Detroit.

For Canadian workers and businesses, Simply getting the bridge open has significant value, and it will also end the monoply created by the Ambassador Bridge for years.

If this goes ahead on July 27th, and that's a big if, because...You know, we're learning each and every day that signed agreements don't necessarily mean much.What will this mean for your city?Because I know it makes it easier for traffic to get across the border, creates productivity and shortens economic distance for shipments.But is there a spinoff that you're going to feel in Windsor, for example?

Well, it's great for the regional economy, and that's Windsor and Detroit being the respective auto capitals of our countries.Our entire industry down here, that's the auto industry and the parts sector, operates on a just -in -time delivery basis.So the day the Gordie Howe Bridge opens, David, it will be the most technologically, most seamless way to cross the land border between the United States and Canada.And it's also, the beauty is here, it's direct highway to highway connection.And so when you'll get off the 401, you'll get right on the I -75, and you can go wherever you have to go.go in either direction.

Right now, getting to the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor, you get off the 401, but you have to go through seven different traffic lights before you get to the entrance or the exit of the Ambassador Bridge.And so it will be the most seamless way to cross, the most technologically advanced way to cross.And I am confident that you're going to see a huge amount of traffic divert there simply because it's going to save time, which is saving money in the trucking world.

Whether you support Mark Carney or not, thisagreement reflects a different way of approaching negotiations.Instead of focusing on who gets the biggest headline, the focus appears to have been on achieving Canada's main objective.Open the bridge.Protect trade.Keep the economy moving.

If some observers are right that the early profit -sharing arrangement will have limited practical effect because construction costs come first, then Canada has secured its central goal while allowing Trump to claim a fake political win.Time will determine exactly how much money, if any, flows under the agreement.But the distinction between profits and revenue is at the heart of why this deal is being interpreted so differently.In politics, appearances matter.Sometimes they matter almost as much as the agreement itself.Donald Trump can tell his supporters that he forced Canada on its knees.
