Carney’s Support Begins to Plummet + U.S. Breaks 86-Year Defence Pact with Canada
President Donald Trump walked away with nothing with his meeting with President Xi in China. And so now President Donald Trump is desperately trying to change the narrative.
We've got quite the situation here today.Welcome back to Moose on the Loose. My name's David.Today, we've got Trump's administration pulling back on a U .S.-Canada defense pact that has originated back from WWII.
You got some other stuff here.Let's jump into this.Starting this episode off, we got new polling data coming from Liaison Strategies.Federal tracker Liberals lead Conservatives by nine. And what are we seeing in here?If an election were held today, which party would you vote for?
Showing the Liberals roughly around 42 percent, Conservatives about 34 percent, NDP has now gone back up to about 11 percent. What's more interesting is this weekly federal tracker.Do you approve or disapprove of the job Mark Carney is doing as Prime Minister of Canada?Making that a little bigger, you can see his approval rating was 67 % this is back when he got into power here 2025 Carney gets in 67 and now it has gone all the way down to 56 % if we look at what's happened here why did he get this bump back up well if we look at the timeline here this is in January the end of January and what happened then his Davos speech his Davos speech came out and then he also had that trip to China he gets this big bump and because all these world leaders are blubbering about his Davos speech. And what has happened since? He's been have a few baubles here, some announcements, nothing really much is happening.
And now he's starting to tank. And on the flip side, we see his disapproval rating here.So he was at 27 % when he started.Interesting enough, you know that new shiny Sheen, his disapproval went down to 21 % at the start and from 21 he's now at 36 % with it only being higher back at his Davos speech. So obviously conservatives see through all this nonsense. And then we've got not sure on the bottom here is bubbling around between about 11 % and it's well 8 % right now.
So Carney's losing support, people are realizing, oh, this guy's not getting the job done.He keeps announcing stuff that's good for Brookfield, not actually building anything. On the flip side here we've got Daniel Smith speaking with Vassy Kapelos. They're talking about pipelines and listen to this.
I went to the celebration for TC Energy when they announced for 75 years of their main pipeline being in business, they managed to get that approved and built in service within 18 months. If they were able to do that back in the 1950s, that's the kind of urgency that we now have to have if we're going to attract private capital.I think we can do it.I think we can do it in a robust way.And I think we can do it with Indigenous partners. And I'm looking forward to having that conversation when we get to that step.
So a couple of things on back there.First off, TC Energy was back in the 50s, was able to build an entire pipeline, get approvals and all that in a year and a half.If Carney had done that day one, we'd have a pipeline almost up and running here in six months.Instead, he wants to delay this another two years before they even start construction. It's ridiculous. And second, the indigenous partnership, if that is the case with these pipelines, then there should be no more reconciliation payments for any of the bands involved in that.
Like it has to come directly out of that.Really, that whole system should be abolished.Every Canadian should be treated equal.
Are all the five routes under consideration?to the northern part of the west coast or is one of them along TMX?
Yeah, there's a southern route and there's also northern routes.
Okay, so you're open to all of that.
Yeah, and we'll, as I said, I'll be getting the briefing on the weekend about what the different trade -offs are, what the economics are, what the different impact is. I mean, I've been pretty clear that I like the idea of a northern route. It gets us to the Asian markets a few days faster. It is less congested and less to navigate with the islands when you go further north as well. But, you know, I'm open -minded about what the Roberts Bank proposal might look like. That was the other one that we were looking at.
And is part of the consideration, like I understand all the other things, you just laid out as considerations, but as part of the consideration, the path of least resistance, essentially, like the fewest stumbling blocks along the way, whatever they might be.I'm not trying to negate the importance of those stumbling blocks, but like, you know, does that factor in?
We've got a really good value proposition. There's an enormous economic benefit. And we now have new tools to allow for Indigenous ownership, which will amount to substantial dollars that will go to the community.that would be willing to host this and partner with us on it.And so we want to be very clear about what those economic benefits would be and begin the consultation to ensure that we can get that level of buy -in.But you have to look at all factors.
There's no question that you can have a project that looks great on paper and the engineers would say that's the route, but you have to deal with the political realities. We want to do our work to make sure that everybody feels confident that we've addressed their concerns. That's why we started early, but we'll really ramp it up as soon as the proposal is submitted after July the 1st.
You gotta wonder, with the Alto Rail, the government can come and just seize land as they wish. Are Canadians being consulted or do only First Nations get consultations?Just asking, I mean, we should all be treated equal in this country.
In many conversations we've had over the years in the lead up to this type of a moment, you cited a lack of willingness to invest based on a climate that you said was created by the former prime minister. What about your own role at this moment in impacting the investment environment? You seem determined to hold a referendum premiere on separation despite the court ruling this week. And we heard from the head of ATCO very recently.

Get started freeThat court ruling is by an activist judge making a political decision.I mean, we'll see what happens in the course. It doesn't seem valid.
You know, that prospect is having an impact right now at this moment.Absolutely.it's impacting investments now.Why aren't you prioritizing certainty for investors in the way that you criticize the Trudeau government for?
This is a ridiculous question here.Obviously, Carney's environmental rules is net zero agenda.Well, Trudeau's and then Carney's kept them in.He's not getting rid of all these nine bad laws. This is the problem. This is why no one wants to invest here.
This is not Daniel Smith's problem or separatists who have created these problems.
for six months.
Daniel Smith is trying her best to work with Mark Carney, but really, he just doesn't want us to have prosperity. He only wants it for himself. He's 91 % invested in America. He's got no skin in the game here.here in the UAE.So, yeah, UAE fast tracking their stuff because they care about boosting their economy, building their country, unlike what Carney's doing here.
With that, we've got this from the CBC.Now, notice the headline here, Trump administration quits. We go to the actual article. You can see it's updated now.It says Pentagon walks away from Canada U .S.
Defense Board.Interesting change of title. They remove the word Trump from this.away from a long -running body that works on the Canada -US defence initiatives. This was established, it says here, in 1940.They're not happy with Carney's increase in defence spending.
This was originally posted by Elbridge Colby, the undersecretary of war for Trump's administration. So he goes on here, he shares Carney's Davos speech.map here.
progress on its defense commitments. The board was established in 1940 as an advisory forum for U .S.-Canada bilateral defense cooperation. The move comes even as Prime Minister Mark Carney has significantly increased Canada's defense spending, pushing it past NATO targets.
This is just another monkey wrench they've thrown in here. They also got new tariffs going on mushrooms next week. There's a lot of problems we've got here.
Carney's not fixing them.Iran's foreign ministry says Tehran has responded through Pakistan to a revised proposal from the U .S.
on ending the conflict in the Middle East.
U .S.President Donald Trump saying over the weekend that the clock is ticking on Iran to make a deal, saying if they don't move fast, there won't be anything left of them. These comments came after Tehran responded to a U .S.peace proposal showing the two sides were still far apart on a number of issues.
Negotiations have been held up by Iran's nuclear ambitions and its control of the Strait of Hormuz.and US President Donald Trump posting on social media today, voicing frustration against the media's Iran coverage. He says, quote, if Iran surrenders, all members of what he calls the fake news media will.headline that Iran had a masterful and brilliant victory over the U .S.Let's bring in CTV News U .
S.political analyst Eric Hamm. And I want to get to that in just a moment. But first, Eric, the Trump administration pausing this long -running body that works on Canada -U .S.defense initiatives, saying that Canada has failed to make progress on its defense commitments.
Your thoughts. How significant is this?Well, this is actually pretty significant because it also comes on the heels of President Donald Trump making clear that It's only a matter of time before the United States also invades Cuba. And so this all, I think, solidifies the fact that President Donald Trump walked away with nothing with his media.with President Xi in China. And so now President Donald Trump is desperately trying to change the narrative.
And he's doing so by trying to actually showcase or at least somehow give him some some bit of leverage as this Kuzma review continues to play out more so.

Get started freeI think Eric Ham is hamming it up.That's not exactly what's going on here.I mean, this is what you get on here. Are they choosing to not talk about this? You know, Trump and Boeing say China agreed to buy 200 aircraft reopening key market for the U .S.
plane maker. Now, if somebody wants to debate why Trump keeps pushing Boeing planes, I mean, he did it with the U .K.and now with China.Does Trump have friends in high places at Boeing?I mean, that's another topic for another day.
But I mean, what they're putting out there on the media, they negate the deal that happened there in China. This coming from the White House.17 billion worth of U .S.agriculture products in 2026 prorated 2728, in addition to soybean purchase commitments that it made in October of 2025.China restored market access for U .
S.beef by renewing expired listings of more than 400 U .S.beef facilities and adding new listings.China will work with U .S.
regulators to lift all suspensions of U .S.beef facilities.the biggest deals ever, but Trump didn't walk away with nothing.I mean, we're talking $17 billion here, plus 200 Boeing made aircraft being bought by China.I don't see Carney getting a $17 billion deal, plus a 200 aircraft deal from China.
I think with the issue of Cuba, what we're seeing here is President Donald Trump is also trying to solidify US power.in the region. And right now, what we're seeing here is many of the countries, including our neighbor, is actually going to bear the brunt of that.
Regarding Cuba, the Americans are talking to them right now, which is like the first time in a long time.Just a few days ago, a CIA director has met officials in Havana for talks Cuba claims.the Cubans for decades. They're opening this up.Obviously, Cuba's in a bad state right now because of the getting their oil cut off.The framing on here is not accurate.
What does this signal when it comes to Canada -U .S.
relations?Well, we know that the relationship, particularly along the military, has always been strong. We know that United States and Canada have operated in joint with NORAD.In addition to that, we know that Canada has also put a pause on the purchase of a number of fighter jets as well. And so I think what we're seeing here now is this tit for tat is continuing to play out.And also the level of distaste that President Donald Trump certainly has shown for Canada is continuing to show itself.
We also know that...
I'm sorry, what? The distaste Trump has for Canada? How about this guy who keeps saying dangerous and divided world, rupture, basically saying the Americans are the enemy for the past year and a half.Like it's just appalling what they put on this network. And he talks about Trump not getting a deal in China and he's so desperate. If that's the case, then Mark Carney has an opening to do a deal with Trump, with Kuzma and get it done.
So Trump would have a checkmark, a win that he can brag about.
the pause of this joint military board along with the tariffs on goods coming in from Canada. And I think what we're seeing here is that relationship is beginning to see a lot of friction and a lot of tension as this most important trade deal continues to be reviewed.
It seemed to just represent another blow to the relationship between Canada and the U .
S.Maybe they should be asking why that blow is there. If Carney came out and said, you know what?want to repair things, we want to work together, we want to build our country strong like they've been for the last many decades. That'sThat's not what he's doing. It's dangerous and divided.
Rupture this, rupture that, taking shots, having the media taking shots. It's all political and Canadians lives are getting ruined by it.
Iran war, Trump coming out with that post today, lashing out at the media and Democrats. What does this tell you about where his headspace is right now on the Iran war?
Well, our sources inside the White House are telling us that the president has become increasingly bored with this war with Iran, and he wants the war to come to an end. However, what we're seeing here is President Donald Trump simply doesn't place the value on diplomacy that other countries do.In fact, if you go back to his trip in Beijing last week, there were 17 CEOs that was with the president on that trip. However, there were only three diplomats that accompanied him as well. And so I think what we're seeing here is President Donald Trump is continuing to attempt hard power tactics to try to get a deal.where I think what we're seeing, at least from Iran, is they want this to be soft power diplomacy that actually wins the day.

What is this soft power diplomacy? You're talking with the Iranian regime that have their officials go around the world and threaten people. They ended the lives of, what, 30 ,000 of their own citizens just before the Americans got over there. You're talking soft power diplomacy. There's only one way to deal with them. It's the hard way or it's the highway.
I think we've had enough of Eric Ham.I thought this clip here was very suiting. This is from two weeks ago from the Canada Strong Free Conference, given everything that's going on right now.
Prime Minister pivoted into a strategic partnership with a country that only runs trade surpluses. And then they signed what I believe is still a secret MOU with the Ministry of Public Security, the MPS, China's MPS.The purpose ofthe MPS is to hunt the Chinese diaspora in your country, in our country. They ran what's called Operation Fox Hunt.American Olympic gold medalist Elisa Liu was one of the victims of Operation Fox Hunt.
They were tracking her father because her father had been a leader in the Tiananmen Times before he fled the country. They were trying to force her to actually skate for China. And so your prime minister signed a secret MOU.with our mortal enemy.
undisturbed for at least 2600 years.Inside was a depository of 22 coffins, 8 mummies that seemed to belong to a special temple caste who sang sacred songs at festivals during the religious rites. The words singer of Anum was found repeatedly on the coffins and suggests the burial chamber was designed specifically for those unique and respected women.a tomb chamber carved directly into bedrock.Amazing.The coffins were arranged in ten horizontal rows.
They were found with a variety of funeral objects. Most exciting of all were eight sealed jars arranged within the large ceramic vessel that still had original clay seals and which therefore they may still contain organic remains either of funerary substances like oils and resins or even biological materials such asThey're described as an information goldmine and are due to undergo state -of -the -art conservation and laboratory analysis.Still making discoveries even to this day.
