Conservative MP Easily Sets CTV News Reporter STRAIGHT!
I just finished interviewing the government's House leader and questioning him about data that doesn't really support the scope of the claims that his government is making about the health of the economy.Your party says the economy is essentially destroyed and it's all the Prime Minister's fault, but there's also objective data to counter the scope of your claim.across industries.Just as I asked the minister, I'm going to ask you Mr. Scheer, isn't it incumbent on your party to accurately paint a picture, not just try and score political points?
Well, when you look at our criticisms of the government, it is all founded in the reality that Canadians are facing.Mark Carney claims that affordability has never been better in Canada. That's what he said in the House of Commons. But when you look at the facts, when Canadians ask themselves, Are things better one year after Mark Carney became Prime Minister? The answer is no.Grocery prices are higher.
Canada is the only country in the G20 in a recession. There have been net job losses, 15 consecutive quarters of declining business investment. When businesses take their dollars out of Canada and put them in other countries, that means lost jobs and opportunities. It also means our dollar falls and the money that Canadians have can purchase fewer things. And so any way you look at it, whether it's crime in our communities, if it's housing costs, if it's Canadian households falling further and further into debt, I don't believe that anybody in Canada believes Mark Carney's claim that affordability has never been better. And I don't believe that anybody feels that life is better when you're into this government other than liberal insiders who have benefited from this Liberal government insider deals.
But for hard -working Canadians, prices are only going higher and anxiety is only increasing, food bank usage is only going up.Nothing's getting better under Mark Carney.
So again, in the same vein that I interviewed the Minister of Health, there are very valid things that you're saying, particularly when it comes to the cost of living for Canadians, the way they feel.Poll after poll after poll say that people do feel like things are in a recession, things are more expensive.I've questioned multiple ministers on the claim that the Prime Minister made in the House of Commons about affordability being the best it is. I believe the quantification he made or he provided was over the last decade. But in the same vein, like when you say absolutely nothing is working under Mark Carney, I'm going to point to another couple of data points.Export volumes are currently sitting around 3 % above where they were in 2024, prior to American tariffs.
And job numbers in May were objectively, like there isn't a single analysis I can find out there that doesn't say, wow, this really beat expectations.Objectively, it is very good that we added more than 150 ,000 full -time, not even just part -time, full -time jobs.Instead of painting a picture of like everything is terrible, is it not more fair to present a more objective analysis when you're criticizing the government.
Well, we are using objective numbers. We use the numbers that Stats Canada publishes, so we know that, you know, you talk about one month's job numbers.None of those increased enough to offset the previous month's decline. And, you know, we look at the government data and we hear the stories from Canadians. When you have net business investment leaving the country, that means fewer jobs and opportunities. That's just a fact.
That's not spin. And remember, Mark Carney didn't promise to be slightly better if you hold the numbers up in the right light and maybe on a full moon, take them outside and see how the numbers present themselves. He didn't say that.He said he was the guy you hire in a crisis, that he was going to undo the decade of terrible liberal policies. And he hasn't.He has kept all those terrible liberal laws that caused all the inflation.
He's doubled Justin Trudeau's deficits. He has increased wasteful spending, both at home and abroad. He's racked up almost a $200 ,000 catering bill for fine foods and luxury meal items for the select few who get to travel in the Prime Minister's plane, while grocery prices in Canada have gone up higher here than in any other G7 country. So, you know, it's not about spin. It's not about putting a partisan label on it.It's about using the data that government departments themselves home ownership, home prices continuing to be a struggle for Canadians.
The number of housing starts in Canada declining even after Mark Carney created new housing bureaucracies and spending billions of dollars. We're again seeing exactly what happened under the Trudeau government.Billions and billions being spent and things actually getting worse.Prices today are higher in the grocery store than they were when Mark Carney took over.Canadian's paychecks go further today than they did when Mark Carney took over.So the results just don't match the illusion that Mark Carney is putting out there.
The actual lived experience of Canadians is worse today than it was when he was Prime Minister. It's harder to get by.Canadian households are falling further and further into debt.
But the one mitigating factor that you don't talk about at all in your portrayal there, and I do understand a lot of the points that you're raising, again, about how tough it is for people out there right now, is what's going on with the United States.Like, you're again saying, and I'm not saying they're without blame, I just spent ten minutes, you know, pressing the government on their role in all of this, but to purport that they are entirely to blame, in that the trade war with the United States, punishing tariffs, the economic environment that has in part created, has nothing to do with it.That it's only the work of one guy.Is that dishonest?
Not at all.Everything I've pointed tois our policies, our outcomes because of Mark Carney's policy. So inflation that drives up grocery prices is directly linked to massive deficits and banks and the Bank of Canada having to buy government bonds to underwrite the spending. That's just a fact. The industrial carbon tax that chases away business investment here in Canada.
Donald Trump didn't put an industrial carbon tax on canes.Liberals did and Mark Carney is keeping it.Mark Carney decided to keep the no new pipelines law.He decided to create a new bureaucracy that costs hundreds of millions of dollars just to operate instead of repealing And if you look at other G20 countries around the world, they're all facing the same tariff wars with the United States. They're facing the same outcomes of conflict in the Middle East and elsewhere. If you look at Mexico, it's just as integrated into the U .
S.economy and just as sensitive to U .S.tariffs as Canada. They're not in a recession.Mark Carney's Canadian economy is in a recession.
So yes, absolutely, there's no doubt that there are impacts on Canadian jobs when the U .S.administration slaps on jobs.just tariffs on Canada. We can't control Donald Trump.Mark Carney certainly can't.
He was elbows up one day and make America great again the next, but we can absolutely control what we do here. That's why Conservatives have been pushing for Mark Carney to repeal those bad Liberal laws that caused all this misery in the first place. His approach is to create new bureaucracies, give himself even more control over the Canadian economy. Our approach is to get the government out of the way, unblock our resources, let businesses thrive and invest and hire Canadians.
So far, his approach is simply not working.this week of the fact that the Prime Minister missed I believe it was as of when maybe it was Wednesday a hundred question periods and I press Minister McKinnon on that as well but as I think you know as I was listening to you and your colleaguestalk about that I was thinking oh this feels like kind of familiar and when I look back it's because it was in 2015 that Prime Minister that year Stephen Harper only attended 35 % of daily question periods. Why was it okay for him to have other things to do and not this Prime Minister?

Get started freeWell, first of all, I would point out that Mark Carney has missed even more question period. So, you know, he's in a league completely of his own, missing far, far more in terms of raw numbers and in percentages. You know, the big difference between in 2015 and now is Conservatives are very proud of our economic record going into 2015.We had emerged out of the recession faster than any other country. We had balanced the budget.Mark Carney is afraid to show up and answer in question period, not simply because he doesn't like You know debating or being in the house, but it's because of his record He's afraid to defend it and in question period that's when conservatives hold up the facts We literally just we go on stats Canada.
We go on government websites that publish data We hold that data up put it to the government say how can you say?Affordability has never been better in Canada even if you say in the last 10 years when more and more Canadians are falling into debt Where more and more working Canadians are going to food banks, you know in my neighborhood? You know I live on a street where where everybody has a job.not proving to be true.
I agree with you, Mr. Scheer. The Prime Minister should be taking questions from the opposition, which represent a huge number of Canadians. They should face accountability.for whatever decisions they are making. But I agree with you then, and I agree with the Liberals and the NDP back in 2015.I don't understand why it's okay for your Prime Minister at the time, your Conservative Prime Minister, to abdicate his responsibility to the democratic process, and it's not okay for Prime Minister Carney to.
Well, again, when you look at the numbers, the percentage and the numbers of missed appearances in the House of Commons by Mark Carney is higher than the stats you're quoting.By a very marginal amount.I think Mark Carney was in the House of Commons less than 25 % of the time. But again, I go back, I think at the end of the day, Canadians think about the impacts on themselves, the lives that they are living, and the government performance. When Conservatives were last in office, we had a growing economy, not a shrinking economy. We had a balanced budget, not massive deficits.
There was not an inflation crisis. There was not a housing crisis. That's what Conservative policies delivered for Canadians. Now, after 10 years of Liberal policies, and now Mark Carney doubling down on those failed liberal policies that caused the inflation crisis in the first place, that caused the crime wave, letting dangerous and repeat offenders out onto the street with easy bail.Mark McCarney is skipping out on question period because he doesn't want to have to defend all the terrible outcomes and the hardships that he's imposing on Canadians. The suffering that can work in Canadians, Canadians who can't find a job, seniors especially.
There's so many demographics in Canada that are paying the price for these bad liberal policies, these massive deficit the lack of investment in our economy, the unsafe streets, the crime in their communities. And after a year, after a year of him promising, Mark Carney promising of moving at unimaginable speeds, I think many Canadians are realizing, you know, he's moving unimaginably slow and in many cases he's making it worse. So that's our point when we highlight his missed question periods. It's, you know, it's not to get into ayou know, a box score type analysis. It's to say why?
Why is he skipping out on question period so often? It's because he's afraid to defend his record because it's so terrible.
Okay, I gotta leave it on that note, Mr Share.I appreciate you making the time for the conversation as always.Have a great summer.
