Cyclospora Outbreak Expands; Eggs Recalled Over Salmonella

This morning, the biggest cyclospora outbreak on record includes a cluster now at nine states.Federal health officials linked the parasite to shredded iceberg lettuce produced by Taylor Farms and sold at Taco Bell.While the FDA has tracked at least some of the tainted lettuce to a farm in central Mexico, on Sunday, the agency's former commissioner said the outbreak may not be fully contained.

I don't think this is fully under control yet because we don't know for sure that that's the only growing region where this is coming from, but it does seem to be the case at this point.

I mean, I would say Angie Lewis says she fell ill with cyclosporiasis, a severe stomach illness, but never ate a Taco Bell.Do you think government health officials have more investigating to do?

Well, I definitely think that they need to get to the bottom and make sure that, you know, people need to be more aware that this is not just Taco Bell.

Taylor Farms has already voluntarily recalled the lettuce, which was also sold at Walmart and said it suspended all iceberg lettuce sourcing and production from central Mexico.For its part, Taco Bell said it stopped selling the suspected ingredient on July 17th.Still, the FDA says it expects cases to keep climbing.So far, almost 2 ,000 people contracted cyclosporiasis, 98 of them had to be hospitalized.It comes as a separate salmonella outbreak has sickened nearly 100 people.The FDA linking some of those cases to eggs they say are likely sourced from Midwest poultry services and sold at multiple locations including Kroger grocery stores.

The egg farming company voluntarily recalling 19 million white shell and brown cage -free eggs which were sold in six states as officials urged consumers to check their refrigerators.Midwest Polk.Services said in a statement overnight that producing safe, quality food for those who eat our eggs is our highest priority.And this voluntary investigation and recall demonstrates that commitment.And guys, the advice to everyone this morning is if you are eating lettuce or eggs from one of these impacted brands, check out those product description labels.There are those strings of letters and numbers that are printed on the packaging.
