EDDIE HOWE QUITS! 🚨 Is Newcastle's Project In CRISIS? ❌

Huge news has just broke.Eddie Howe has walked away from Newcastle United.Newcastle United are undoubtedly crusading towards the crisis helping me now discuss and dissect exactly what is going on at ST James' Park.It's the wonderful Oli Klink.Oli, sir, there isn't a better man to talk to about this.You are a lifelong Newcastle fan.

You were following them home and away across Europe last year, and you were telling me that Eddie Howe is the governor, Eddie Howe is the main man, and Newcastle were on the precipice of something special.This, off the back of getting battered by Bristol City, must shock you to the core.

It's definitely shocking news and the timing of it is shocking.I think if you look at last season, there was no doubt that Eddie Howe was under pressure.There was definitely stages of the season where the fan base was very split.There'd be plenty of fans that wanted Howe to go because the league form was desperate, Rory.Absolutely desperate.They end up with a 12th place finish.

But there's others that looked at the track record, looked at the fact that he'd won the League Cup, the first domestic trophy in 70 years, looked at the fact that he'd qualified for the Champions League twice during his time as Newcastle manager and said, look, there's credit in the bank there.Give him a chance.They had a horrendous summer of transfers where they panicked, bought a load of signings, whether that was, you know, Johan Wisse, you could argue Nick Voltermader.There were other signings that were targets that didn't work out, like Anthony Alanga, but I don't think you can blame Eddie Howell that much for walking away when you look at how this summer's panned out so far.They've lost Anthony Gordon.They've lost Sandro Tonali.

It looks like Bruno Guimaraes is walking out the door.I mean, let's be honest.Him walking pretty much confirms that Bruno Guimaraes is going to end up at Arsenal.And you look at the profile of the players they're bringing in, all of these 20 -year -olds.Look, they might be fantastic talents.They might be absolute gems.

You know, the likes of Amadou Bamba or the keeper, Yoann Joan, orBusbana Toure.Look, they might be exciting signings, but they're not going to be replacing the stars that Newcastle are letting go.And it seems to me as if Eddie Howe's got to the end of his tether, doesn't like the way the club are operating, and has sadly moved on.

Mate, do you think this is a crisis?Like, how damaging is Eddie Howe walking away?Like, he hasn't been sacked.He's just decided, I don't want to be part of this Newcastle United project anymore.How damaging is that?

So the way it's been reported is that it is a mutual agreement.And the only reason I say that is because it looks like they have a replacement already signed up, Mattias Jassel from Al Ali.And you look at that as an appointment, which, by the way, I believe is done.And that is worrying, Rory.That is so worrying because this guy doesn't seem to have much of a track record.It feels like jobs for the boys, given that we've got Saudi ownership.

that they're taking this manager from the Saudi league and putting him in this position.You know, if Eddie Howard had walked in this instance, but they were looking at other potential candidates that might even have been exciting and maybe had a fresh philosophy and maybe, you know, could have taken Newcastle a bit further.I wouldn't say it'd be exciting news, but at least it would be something you can get behind.I think this appointment makes it a real worry, because it's so unpredictable, and this guy, like I say, has no track record, has no Premier League experience, and that's the thing that's worried me even more than the fact that Eddie Howe's leaving.

Look, the way that it's been for Newcastle, Anthony Gordon, gone.Alexander Isak, gone.Bruno Guimaraes, wants to go.It feels like Tonali, gone.Is this Newcastle United project, is it actually falling apart at the seams here?

I think you could definitely argue that.I think you could definitely argue that.There's been restrictions.that we all know about with with PSR that means that I think the ownership that the Saudis wanted or at least the project that the Saudis wanted.in reality has been impossible to achieve.And because of that, I think mistakes have been made at the top, whether that's been the wrong kind of hires.

You know, you look at the tenure of Paul Mitchell as sporting director, but even some of the mistakes that were made before that with overspending and not complying with the rules, that led to the sale of Yancuba Minta and Elliot Anderson is another one that you forget about when you look at him now off the Man City for £116 million.Newcastle's policy this whole time was essentially to identify some fantastic players and they've brought some amazing moments for them, you know, not least that League Cup win.But I always felt that as soon as that first domino went, Rory, which was Alexander Isak, who then refused to play, refused to train, got his move to Liverpool.I just always felt as if the heads of those other stars might be turned.That's not then helped by the fact that the club didn't invest properly in their biggest ever summer when they got Champions League football and just won a trophy.And then that means that, you know, the likes of Gordon and Tonali, et cetera, have their heads turned and want to go on and progress their careers.

It then leaves Newcastle with huge holes.And what we even saw last season is they were still struggling to attract big players.to the club, whether that's to do with what players felt they could achieve at the likes of Liverpool or Chelsea, but also to do with the wages that Newcastle could offer because they're restricted on that too.So, yeah, I think it's fair to say that this project at the moment looks extremely wayward.And in fact, rather than looking up the table, Newcastle need to start worrying about looking down the table, I think.

Yeah, I'm actually in agreement with you there.Do you think that there's a section of Newcastle fans, like where do you sit on this?Last year was a woeful campaign.It was woeful.You look at the players that were born in Volta Mada with a langer around.It just didn't work.

It really didn't work.And you look at any house contribution.Sunderland finished above you.You were beaten by some to those kind of things.They do really do matter in the strawberry pub at the Gallagher.They really they really count.

Were you ever part of the Newcastle support that should leave?Or did you always think that Eddie Howe was the right man?Is anybody at Newcastle happy to hear that Eddie Howe's gone?

I think there will be people that are happy to see the back of Eddie Howe.I think they were getting a bit tired of the same old excuses.I think they maybe felt that his style of play moving forward wasn't one that Newcastle could continuously qualify for Europe with.and then maintain during a Champions League season or during a Europa League season.And we saw that with the amount of injuries they got and the fact that they couldn't keep their domestic form up when they were last in the Champions League.If I'm being honest, I was still in the camp that Eddie Howe should stay.

Like I say, the fan base is very split on that.There'll be a lot of fans that disagree with that.But when we're sitting here and trying to debate whether there are fans that are happy to see the back of Eddie Howe today, I think they will be, but also they'll be massively concerned about who's coming in to replace him.And they should be massively concerned about who's coming in to replace him.So as much as there might be a few fans that are glad Eddie's going, I think they'll look at that appointment and think, well, what we potentially did here was we missed the chance at the end of last season to get rid of Hal when the form was bad.and go for someone like her, and I know it sounds outlandish given that he's now at Real Madrid, but go for someone like Jose Mourinho.

You know, look at the fact that Deserbe went to Tottenham, and maybe we hoist out on the chance to get those candidates.

It doesn't sound more ridiculous that Mourinho is at Real Madrid.If anything,it makes the mistake of not going for him worse.The fact that Newcastle potentially passed up the opportunity of appointing Mourinho, and then the biggest club in the land decided to appoint him, it actually paints the decision to swerve Mourinho in a far more negative colour, doesn't it?

Yeah, absolutely.And Rory, I do also think that the hierarchy here have to take a huge amount of the blame because they've sold these stars at will.You know, from the things I've heard from within the club, it's almost like as soon as they get the right price, anyone's for sale, despite the fact that, you know, they sit there and say, no, no, no, Bruno's not for sale, Bruno's not for sale.You know, if Arsenal reach the right figure, eventually he'll go out of the door.I think, you know, in fact, you've got the CEO, David Hopkinson, saying that they want to be competing with the biggest clubs in the world by 2030.What kind of statement is that to make?

What kind of stuff is he talking about?Just absolute nonsense.And it was it was nonsense anyway, before this complete mess.And it smacks of someone who has no idea what he's doing.

Apparently, I'm just kind of obviously, this is a breaking story.So it's developing whilst we're talking.I really do appreciate you finding the time you're shedding so much light on it.But Ollie, I'm just reading here that Eddie Howell Acknowledged to, Eddie Howe spoke to the owners and said that he wanted to leave weeks ago and said out of loyalty to the club, out of loyalty to the fans, that he will stay on until an appointment is found.If you give, if you give somebody the opportunity to appoint someone, you stay in the job to ease the transition, surely they could have been a little bit more ambitious with the appointment that they've ultimately settled upon.

I totally agree with you, Rory.And again, like you say, it's a developing story.I'm just reading that now.Does that smack of a club that has any idea what it's doing?This is embarrassing.This is absolutely embarrassing.

So you're telling me they'vehad several weeks to try and pick out a decent appointment and they've gone for the manager of Al -Ali?Really?Really?

Do you think they're losing interest?

Do you feel like the PIF?Because of the way that they've been operating.Do you think the PIF have had enough?Genuinely.

It's unbelievable.It is actually a crisis, isn't it?

It is.Yeah, it is.There's got to be a level of disinterest there from the PIF.They seem to have thought that they've just put the right people in place and then not held them accountable on a number of occasions.And to see that Eddie Howe told them weeks and weeks ago that he wanted to leave, that would have been a better time for him to go.Why are you allowing him?

Why are you allowing him throughout this very important summer where you're trying to embed players and coach them your philosophy, several weeks of training?I know the World Cup was on, but Newcastle had plenty of players that weren't there.It just makes no sense, this to me.Absolutely no sense.And yeah, I think Christ has said the word, Rory, sadly.

Whatever you think of Howe, whatever you think of his limitations, he is a good manager.You're not going to appoint a better manager than Eddie Howe.Whether he's better for Newcastle, whether it's gone stale, that's a different conversation.But this is bad.Ollie, I know, not in terms of catastrophizing it, and I appreciate that this is terrible for you, terrible news for you to wake up to.You mentioned it earlier, you said that you now need to start looking down rather than up, and I completely agree with you.

It's a threat of relegation, something that you're actually facing here.Are you considering the threat of relegation?Is Newcastle's priority next season?40 points.

The thing is, Rory, genuinely, when Eddie Howe was in charge, I can't believe I'm saying that, by the way, but when Eddie Howe was in charge, I wasn't that worried about it, just because I thoughtone game a week, he's a good enough manager.Yes, the squad's been gutted, but, you know, we've seen him finish 11th before with a team that was destined for relegation, you know, managed to keep us up on that occasion.But now it's a complete unknown.It's a complete unknown.I have no idea what Matthijs Jassel is going to be offering this side with a bunch of young players, with none of the star talent that they have.

We've seen in that preseason game, by the way, and I know it's preseason, and people will point to that, but Sven Botman was absolutely all over the place.New goalkeeper looked pretty dreadful.They don't really know who their number one is.I've got no idea who they're going to be bringing in before the season starts, too.Doesn't look like they're going for any proven talent.Still looks like they're going down the track of buying young players, and we all know it.

You need experience in your side.I can't believe I'm saying this.If you want to stay up, look, it's nothing new.Let's be fair.It's nothing new.I've seen Newcastle in relegation fights and lose relegation fights before.

It's just absolutely not where I thought I'd see this club, even a year ago.Even a year ago, I definitely didn't see them in this position.

It's unbelievable.Oli, I really do appreciate you helping me make sense of this ridiculous decision.Just one word before you go, just quickly.Thoughts on Eddie Howe?How will he be remembered by the Newcastle faithful?

Ah, Rory.I mean, for me, he goes down as one of the greatest ever Newcastle managers.He has to, for winning that League Cup.And I really do hope, despite this messy end, that that's how fans remember his time at Newcastle.You know, like I say, came in, kept them up when they looked destined for relegation, and people forget that.Destined for relegation, managed to get them 11th.

That magical season when they came fourth the first time with Miguel Almiron's purple play.and bringing an aggressive style of football and bringing an identity and bringing a hard -working team and a hard -working manager that Newcastle fans have been craving for so long.It gives us a moment that I will never forget and so many Newcastle fans will never forget.that trophy win and I think he should be held in the highest, highest regard among some of the greats of Newcastle managers for what he achieved at the club.And I'm just really gutted that it's had to end like this.Amazing.
