Have I played this? Much like many people asked if I played that one in the Firewatch Tower. No, I have not and I didn't play that one before. It just so happens there's a bunch of horror games that take place in Firewatch Tower. Just like there's a bunch of horror games that take place in a house at winter. Rick asked me what the man looked like and after that he didn't ask any more questions. We think he knew more than he was letting on, but in the end he gave us a full refund

And there was a cellar door that I completely forgot about I'm guessing that's where that locked door came from and why that guy was Able to unlock it. So he must have been able to get in and out of the house that way Now, uh, this is the fifth episode of this game series, right? And so, I am going to be less forgiving, given that it's the fifth one on this... in this episode series, right? Just like I gave a warning to Garden of Ban-Ban,

to be like, you're on thin ice because at this point you're gonna have to start innovating on some things. And I'm gonna say the exact same thing for this one here. Which is that it's not bad and I like a lot of things going on. And in the beginning I really like the details of like throwing a coffee cup on the ground and then the janitor confronts you being like, Hey, I don't wanna be here.

And that was- that was fun and I I even I even like the kind of similar Recipes going on for these kind of things going into it and like the mechanics of like this the the hide-and-seek is like whatever I get that you might be trying to show that you can hide in certain spots around the house, whatever I think it's pretty contrived but it's a hey, I'm gonna find out which one of you still plays hide-and-seek as an adult Which could be many of you I you know, I don't know but usually one-on-one hide-and-seek isn't really something that I could imagine doing Saw it coming a mile away, but that aside it's not about that

It's not about that This game had an hour and ten minutes of filler and I'm not saying that all of that it didn't need some setting up of the story But it's very clear that from the get-go. There's something about this developer and food like that's like a that's like a thing I don't know what kind of thing it is, but there's something about food here. That is unnecessary absolutely not even like a ho-ho people are gonna find this uncomfortable just Absolutely unnecessary absolutely doesn't add anything to the story

Completely could be removed and it's not even like oh it needs to be shorter kind of thing is like this story Clearly didn't need that it didn't need it if an episode is shorter It's gonna be shorter but it's like it felt like that because all the other ones had like an hour and a half to two hours of content like with the the the the firewatch station There was actually a lot happening and there was some reason to go out and explore the woods The setting was bigger

It was just large enough to fill that space right and I could be forgiving and I felt like that was interesting because you had a lot of stuff going on with the Computer and the filling out of the data and I'm fine with doing that kind of stuff because you don't know which pertinent to the plot right this one felt like a step backwards that tried to justify its length by putting things in there that didn't necessarily mean anything right the the entire relationship set up with this Mike character is difficult

and I know this is based on a true story there's no way to confirm or deny what actually it is but the relationship behind that and being in control of that, it just felt uncomfortable the entire time because the game is a horror story so every situation where you've been in in the previous episode has set you up to have uncomfortable situations with the people that you're with, right? And so you have this one-on-one and it's like there's no real understanding of what the dynamic of that relationship is

because from the very beginning, and it was voiced in the office and not voiced later in there so I couldn't glean any context of how the actor was portraying any of this information because it was there before, and the only context that we got from it was that it was awkward. There was an awkward laugh, literally written into the subtitles and delivered by the actor. That actor was not present for the rest of the entire game I don't know why I feel like if you're gonna start it that way you should probably deliver it that way

There was also a lack of polish that good and here's what I mean by polish going into it. This is the fifth episode I'm going to start expecting a lot more polish out of these things if you have a shorter story Then it should be tighter and you should polish it a lot tighter right? The driving. I hear the engine, I don't hear the road. I don't hear the other things that happen when you're driving. You don't need to have complexity but I'm driving in a snowstorm. All I hear is the engine.

You should hear the wheels going over the different types of things. This is what I mean. Like this is the fifth episode, the details that I'm expecting out of the 5th episode of this PAID SERIES of this PAID SERIES of games needs to have the detail that earns that 5th chapter in a PAID SERIES, right? I'm not saying it needs to have AAA quality, that's never what I'm saying

but if you're gonna have an episodic horror series, every one of them should be more detailed and more rich than the last or at the very least, AS detailed and AS rich than the last. Or at the very least, as detailed, and as rich as the last. However, this one, as I think everyone could say, given that the lookout one had a lot more cooking, and a lot more eating,

you know, but it was part of the daily ritual, the ritual of the daily experience of being in this lookout and doing all this, fed into that, right? This one didn't, because it was only one day and it feels like the story that was submitted is a lot shorter and didn't have a lot of substance and so when it's made into this thing and I get it is a

difficulty of the developer pulling from real stories they're not gonna always be as grand this is from a setting standpoint a kind of regression so I think at this point you kind of got to start adding in your own creative input to make it into something and this Might seem like I'm being mean here But once again, I must point out if there's a new developer in this new indie game

I have a personal philosophy that there shouldn't be too much criticism because it could be someone's first time doing this This is not their first time doing it. This is far from their first time doing it. So, given they have another one on the horizon that's coming up next in a month or two, and I will play it, but I'm going to review it. I am going to be a serious reviewer about it because there's just some things here that I think need to be addressed.

And I get it, it's tough being a solo developer and there's this expectation that you always got to deliver on things and I don't mean to say this like I don't think that there's Progression here because I think there's a lot of fun things going on, but it is also the same mechanic It's the same exact hide-in-a-closet mechanic. The killer is gonna get you if you speak, you know It's a recipe now And if I've played the last one if someone's going into this who has played all these other ones, the mechanic is the same.

And I think it got off to the wrong foot because of the mischaracterization of that relationship. There is a way to present a relationship between these two characters without starting it off being awkward, therefore all of these set pieces that you have them together with have more meaning, right? The chairs here and the fishing, that could have had a lot more meaning if you had taken a different approach to the setting. Instead of it being like, you know, this awkward thing like, oh man, I can't wait to get to know each other in there.

Maybe have the guy be more standoffish, being like, maybe it's weird from that perspective as opposed to being this way. And I know it came from a submitted story and that's it. But if you're a game developer and you're looking at this, you would either pick a story that could be more fleshed out or if you don't have an option, talk with the person that submitted and say like, since this is a work of fiction, since it's turning into a work of fiction and it's not gonna be based on truly true events cause there needs to be some play in it

start to- start to characterize a bit more give there a reason given that Mike is the only person that we're interacting with the entire game the person that comes to our rescue, the person that leaves the person that guides through the entire experience goes to the pizza shop

all this stuff that- that relationship needs to not be empty. Or feel empty. And if you're trying to put things into there, I'm not saying you wrote it empty, I'm not saying you implemented it empty. I'm saying that there needs to be a deeper level there for people to discover. And one option might be to have him be more standoffish and kind of be like,

It doesn't mean that the character has to be like yearning for it Make if it's going to be awkward make it awkward from both Standpoints like it's kind of quiet and then those moments where it's like maybe we could have little bits of that coming together and you get Little catches of like oh there used to be something here between them But it was messy and now they're kind of apart and they're both standoffish and they're both like you know they have that moment of like a little

Glimmer of like oh you and I used to have a spark, but it's like well also I remember that thing and I'm I'm not over that it could be still Mike being like you didn't talk to me after what we What I thought we had so I was left with bitter feelings And so this this moment instead of it being like you know know, just patting the bed next to me, like, hey, why don't you have a seat? It's like, I get the instinct for that and being a horror game, like, Oh, let's make it uncomfortable for the main character, but it's like, it never came

across like that because the horror wasn't there. All was all there was there was the uncomfortability and given that the actual horror element of it, you know, didn't really land for me. It might have landed for other people, but it did feel very samey to everything else You had an opportunity here I think there was an opportunity here to do a little more with that and Make it a little deeper a little richer, you know

And I could be fine with a game that is of smaller scope than the previous one but if it's going to be a small scope I'm gonna like I said hit it harder on the polish and the actual details of it and the innovation of the game design and the kind of developing of the different ways that people can get scared in this and the setting things up instead of being, you know, here's this kind of scary guy, here's another kind of scary guy, here's your companion, he's a kind of scary guy.

If it's going to be a shorter story, it's got to be a better story. I think. Anyway, that's just my opinion. There was a lot in there. Lixian, edit that down, make it sound more comprehensive. I was just rambling off the top of my head. But!
