Good Samaritan billed after performing CPR

A man in Edmonton is disputing a recent bill from Alberta Health Services for ambulance service.He says it was surprising to be charged for a minor checkup that did not include a trip to the hospital.CTV's near Manisa has his story.

So today I got a surprise $250 bill from Alberta Health Services for saving someone's life.

Ian Sutanto is trying to make sense of an unexpected bill.It happened last month in the Brander Garden School Gym.Sutanto's 12 -year -old son's basketball team was practicing, then the players and their fathers played a friendly game.That's when one of the dads collapsed.

and then after further assessment and he wasn't responding we checked his breathing his pulse they weren't there and then so that's when we started CPR.

Sutanto and another bystander worked on him for about 15 minutes.

We had shocked him twice with AED and by the time they arrived he was already taking some breath like he had kind of come to.

Sutanto says the adrenaline of playing basketball and doing CPR made him lightheaded.An EMT and an SUV assessed him at the school.He didn't go to the hospital.A few weeks later the bill arrived.

He did check me out so I understand you know I guess you put that through the system and I guess that generates a bill but was not something that you know, crossed my mind.So it was just kind of a surprise.

In Alberta, a trip to the hospital by ambulance will cost you $385.If one is called and you're assessed, but you don't go to the hospital, you could be billed $250.Satanto says he can afford to pay the bill, but is concerned for those who can't.

Ambulance services should be covered, right?You don't want people making that a factor in their decision whether or not to call in an emergency situation, worrying about having to deal with the bill.

After sharing his experience online, Sutanto heardfrom the province late this afternoon.His bill has been cancelled and the Hospital and Surgical Health Services Ministry tells CTV it will be reviewing its policy.Nairam Nisar, CTV News, Edmonton.
