Hanson details immigration policy as Tony Burke postpones major NPC address
Joining me now is One Nation leader Pauline Hanson.Pauline, great to see you.Welcome to AIM Agenda.I wanted to show you this first before we kick off our interview. It's from 2001.It's you and Natasha Stott Despoja on the cover of the Aussie Post.
You could buy it for $3 .50.The headline there, Showdown of the Sheilas. What do you think about the headline and how have you changed since then?
Well, I think the hair's the same and the lipstick's the same.I don't know what happened to that outfit I was wearing, but anyway.Laura, I'm seeing this happen all the time. They're dragging out all these old photos of me, old interviews of me and all the rest of them.I'm like, oh, God.You know, things have changed, but my views haven't changed at all.
So anyway, I've been consistent with my views, Laura. You don't mind being called a sheila either, do you?No, no.That's where I grew up, you know.Sheila and no problem at all.
Love it.Alright, let's get into some policy then.I want to ask you about immigration. Are you living rent free in Tony Burke's head right now?
I think I am.They're scared to do anything because the support that One Nation is getting. And I think we're having the same impact on the Coalition as well because they're both really concerned about the support that we're getting based on really the one issue is mass migration that's happening in Australia. So Tony Burke is saying, hey, I really need to pull back on my speech that I was going to give at the press club because he's got to appease the unions. He's got to appease the other left leaning in his party as well and the Greens. So, he's got a battle on his hands.
And his seat as well.
When you say you want to cut annual migration in capita at $130 ,000, is that permanent migration or net overseas?
That would be permanent migration into the country. We'd still allow for back -to -backthose workers coming to Australia, those ones that will be here for the short period of time. You've also got your tourists on top of that. That's a different visa, so there's different... visa categories as well, Laura.Look, when John Howard was in, we had about 80 to 100 ,000 that came into the country.
The country ran really well.At the moment, we are overwhelmed. We need to have a breather.I'm not saying 130 ,000 permanently, you know, on the books.Let's review it every year.Laura, I've got people just down the road from me and I pulled up the other day, homeless, three years living in their cars.
This is happening.I went to a park and I saw homeless families.Families.It is a crying shame in a perceived country like us that's supposed to be wealthy that we have families living in tents and especially children.Children should not be living like this.So I don't care what people think, whether, you know, it's going to affect their businesses, they're not going to sell them any products or the universities because they won't have the number of foreign students coming in here.
I don't care.My concern is for those Australians that can't get a roof over their head and a decent standard of living and way of life.
But to get to that number, you're going to have to cut skilled migrants, aren't you?And how's that going to affect our inability or otherwise to build the homes that you say we need?
Laura, let me go back to the figures that I have from 72 to 73.They brought in 739 ,000 people in the country.Only 51 ,605 were skilled.Only 51 ,000 out of 739 ,000 of that, only 1 ,800 in the construction industry. It's been an absolute scam. We've allowed these people in.
Why do we need people coming in with foreign students? Why do they need their families? You're here to study. If you don't want to be away from your partner or family, do it online. But no, they've allowed to bring in their families. That's a strain on our infrastructure.
And then we've got 432 ,000 people on bridging visas in Australia. Why?This is all impacting our country, because the governments have been lax in getting rid of those people that should not be here.So you're talking about mass deportations then?
Are you talking about mass deportations then for overstayers or for anyone that you think doesn't be here?
There's between 75 and other figures I've heard, 100 ,000 people that are in the country illegally at the moment. Now, they had a contract to come out here for only a certain period of time. That was a visa that was given to them. They've overstayed. So their people are using, oh, I want to claim refugee status because now I've changed, I'm actually a homosexual and I can't go back to my country, all for political reasons. We've got to get tougher on these people as well.

Get started freeLaura, the country is suffering by it.They're using our system. Not only bridging visas, then they're given Medicare, then the facilities, you know, assistance or special assistance that they're given. It's got to stop. The taxpayers have had enough of this.Like I said, I'm a representative for the people of Australia first and foremost.
Clean up our own backyard first, then we may be able to look at bringing in the right people into the country.I'm not against migration, Laura, never have been, but we've got to bring in people who are going to make the country prosperous, that they have something to offer, that they want to be Australians.
But Pauline, those people that you speak of don't make up a huge number and if we're talking about a cap on permanent migration and needing to have the skilllabour to build the houses that you say you need.I mean, I look at the HIA says we're short 83 ,000 skilled workers in the construction industry alone. So I'm struggling to see how you can make this cap of 130 ,000 and still have the people to build the homes.
Laura, the more people you bring in, they've got to have housing. There's your problem. Why bring in so many people that don't fit the needs that we want in Australia? We don't need any more Uber drivers, nail technicians, dog walkers, these people.Gone.Stop all that.
So you're going to change the skills list?I've tried to push Right, the skills list.Very, very important.Who are you going to bring to the country?Doctors, nurses, engineers. Those people that are going to benefit our country.
I pushed in 2018, I saw we would have a skills shortage in 2018 and I pushed the Government to bring in my apprenticeship scheme where they put out apprenticeships, the Government paid 75 % of the first year's wage, 50 % of the second and 25 % of the third year's wage. That was taken up in three weeks, $1 ,360.Guess what?It wasn't followed through.I could see we would have a shortage of it.I've got vision for the future which the major political parties don't have.
don't have. That's what we need to do.Get up the TAFE colleges, teaching kids in education, allowing them to go and work day a week in some of these businesses.Help out small business to put on apprenticeships and people to start taking up the jobs here in Australia.
Let's talk about the housing market more generally because we've seen a downturn.I had a guest on my show yesterday that says we could see 10 -15 % come off the value of properties.Would you reverse negative gearing and CGT changes?completely?Would you go even further than that?
I put up an amendment to the bill to allow for two in the negative gearing. So make it two houses, negative geared, but get review capital gains tax.completely get rid of it.It's a big mistake that the government made. They're starting to realise it now, but they don't know how to turn it around. The Australian people are feeling the effects of it.
They said it wouldn't affect the housing prices. They said, oh, rentals will only go up $2.Well, they've gone up 25 times that to $50 at least a week in Sydney. So we see the decline in the cost of housing. You see a lot of these 5 % housing loans that have given to over 50 % of Australian people who are not even Australian citizens. So again, it's the taxpayers for having to pick up this and I was against the 5 % housing loan.
I said you're setting these ones up for failure because here we've seen a drop.negative equity, so that's a big problem for them. Our housing is way over cost compared to the rest of the world and we're putting people into more debt for a longer period of time, paying interest back to these financial institutions, which is a crying shame.
50 % of the cost of a new dwelling around about is state and federal taxes.Would you cut those and how deep?
Of course.Laura, I've been on about this since 1996 and it was the same back then and I've been speaking about this.If you build a million dollar house, you're paying $400 ,000 in taxes. The add -ons is wrong. That's why I brought out the policy that if you build a house up to a million dollars, the GST on your building materials would be gone.We need to address the taxes.
So local, state and federal government taxes. They're ripping the people off. They've got to rein in their spending.give monies back to the people, put into their pockets and housing, the big issue. If you can cut those taxes on the housing that they make money out of, you're going to allow housing to go ahead a lot in Australia.
Just the GST though, would you go further?Because that's only 10 % and that's state revenue.Correct.
Yeah, it is.No, I'd go a lot further than that. How we can do it from the federal sphere to do with the state governments or all these local governments as well.So what they're getting on some of these units, $30 ,000 cost on top of it, it's just ridiculous. But they're all scrambling for money, because the waste of spending is going right across your local, state and federal governments.Rain in your government spending.
Alright, I want to ask you about ISIS now. You're pushing the Parliament to support your ISIS bill. The way you drafted this bill, you seem to accept that the Parliament has gone as far as it can in giving the Minister the discretionary power, the decision power there. Is that why you have gone for a court order?
Yes we have because I don't believe they've used it and I don't think Tony Burke used that to the best of his ability so therefore it gives him another avenue to go to the courts to get the exclusion orders. Now they can keep going on and on.Also the passports.I think it's a bill that they need to look at if they're very serious and the Labor government about not wanting them back in the country. They should have no problem in supporting my bill that I put up and the The Coalition should have no problem supporting it as well, because what I'm hearing, it's got legs to stand on if it's challenged in the High Court.

Get started freeYeah, I think so as well. It's a thoughtful bill indeed, but you have stopped short of revoking the Australian citizenship of a suspected terrorist fighter without a criminal conviction. Why?
We're under international conventional law where you can't strip anyone of their citizenship unless they've actually got a dual citizenship. So that needs to be looked at.I've constantly asked this question, these ISIS brides we brought back in, did they have dual citizenship? No one can answer me.So I don't know the fact.I'm quite happy of anyone here who is a threat to our country with terrorism.
I've no problem stripping them of their citizenship and getting them out of the country.I'd take a tough stance.a very tough stance on all this.I want Australia to feel safe.I want the people out there to feel safe and we don't have any terrorist attacks.
I want to show you this from the Senate inquiry on gambling reform. You may have seen it but this was Luke Bateman earlier this week.
There were so many loved ones in my life who were so deeply affected as well.I was stealing money from my own mother to fund my gambling addiction.
He was a problem gambler. He was 24 years old.He spent all his money playing football. He was stealing from his mother. He was being offered inducements by, he says, some of these gambling executives offered drugs, free accommodation that would put him in a position where he could keep losing money. How worried are you about that kind of behaviour?
What would you do about it?
Well, I've heard about it all the time.People have to admit they do have a problem, whether you're actually an addict, a drug addict, whether you're actually on alcohol or cigarettes.Admit your own, you know, values. And he has, but the fact is, these people need to go and get help. You can't stop people from having a flutter or havinga bet or wanting to shut down everything.
The same as we have accidents on our roads, what are you going to shut down driving so no one has an accident with it?People have to take responsibility for their own actions and I hear this constantly all the time that people do get caught up in gambling. The Government is looking at gambling legislation to rein it in.by all means, and I'll be looking at that closely, what they're proposing. But I'm not saying get rid of gambling. If you got rid of gambling altogether, horse racing or whether it's having a flat or a lotto or whatever, You know, most people out there are quite controlled and know what they can afford.
I think that if we got rid of a lot of this, you wouldn't have the sports that are going on in this country without that backing from these organisations.
I think what you're talking about is a level of personal responsibility, but what Luke was talking about went a bit further. They knew he had a problem. They're offering him drugs, according to him.I mean, that's not on, surely.
It's wrong.No.No, definitely not.I'm totally opposed to drugs and I will always look at trying to stop that from happening.I feel sorry for these people that get given this opportunity to go on.Not an opportunity, but you know, forced.
They're forced.Because of their addiction, they're forced into another area. That is no good for them. No, I don't agree with that.
Pauline, let's talk about your favourite ABC.They've not apologised and have not pulled that Gina Rinehart skit, should they?
Of course they should, and I'm disgusted with our Prime Minister who hasn't called it out and told them to pull it down.We fund them to the tune of $1 .3 billion a year.To say it's satirical is a load of rubbish and a cover -up, and I'm sick of their attitude to the conservative side of politics. They can't be up front, they can't tell the truth.the truth. They're not fair and balanced.
And that's why I said I want to get rid of the ABC.Let it go subscription.Let's see how good they are, how many people would sign up to them. You know, you need fair and balanced in your programs. And the same as News 24.You open it up to everyone to have their say on your programs, which is great.
And that's how news should be presented to the people, not the biased, aggressive reporting. And it was disgusting, absolutely disgusting, what they allowed and still up there to say about Gina Rinehart, or any Australian for that matter, regardless of whether it's Gina Rinehart or any Australian.
Yeah, so you'd feel the same if the skit was about Anthea Albanese.I just wonder what you feel about comedy, satirical, the right to offend as being an essential element of free speech.Does it have its limits? And where's that line?

Get started freeWell it is, look, we actually do that ourselves in my own cartoons, Pulling Hands is Pleasant Plain Cartoons.Yes, I didn't think of that.So we know when, correct, we know when to pull back and what is the message, what is funny, so I do it myself. So I know there's a fine line out there, but they've passed it, right? And that's why they're so left lean and full of these aggression progressives in the ABC that have destroyed the ABC that it used to be that I grew up with and it was a proud organisation. It's no longer that, Laura.
and it needs to go.They need to actually have their legs cut out from underneath them, take the funding away from them. And I call on the Prime Minister and every other minister, Penny Wong, the whole lot of you, you actually need to go to the ABC and Keith Williams and you tell him, get rid of that rubbish that's online.
We'll see.You have accepted a $1 million donation from Gina Reinhart. In fact, you were very upfront about it.We saw social mediaposts and where that money went. You've been critical of the Prime Minister over his fundraising dinner with Felix Lee.
What is your objection there? Is it the lack of transparency or the source of the money?
Laura, I had the cameras there and everyone and I said, this is what I've been given, the plane by Gina Reinhart and I've been up front and putting out there what I get.I'm up front with the people. He couldn't even tell you, oh I don't even know who owns the house.I was just invited to this dinner.Everything that he does, it's a cover up or he lies to the Australian people. What's your problem?
Why don't you Explain to people what you get from the unions as well.So your backdoor hand, you know Handouts that you get from the unions these other organizations. What about Pratt? What about Lindsay Fox all these other organizations?I feel that I am under the microscope a lot more than any other political party or leader They've got away with this for years. So hopefully in Putting the spotlight on me, I hope the media takes note and puts more of the spotlight onto these other political parties and let's be fair right across the board.
I've always been upfront and honest with the Australian people.I will continue to do so.I expect the same out of our other leaders and I expect the media to hold them more to account as well.
would sit in any cabinet of yours or have a national security portfolio?
Look, Malcolm Roberts has done a fantastic job as my colleague for the last 10 years.I hear a lot of praise about him by many people as I travel across the country.Malcolm has never supported the chemtrails. You've got to understand Malcolm Roberts is always that scientist that comes out of him and I want to see the data.Everything that he talks about, show me the data. He's never supported the chemtrails.
We've spoken about it many times. We get a lot of people contacting our officers and talking about chemtrails. And he said to me, and he says to them, show me the evidence. So, you know, prove to me and show me the evidence. That's Malcolm Roberts. And that Alex Jones, there was a...
I think there was only one thing. In general, I don't understand what's going on about the media, because there was only one aspect of that.Malcolm doesn't have a chance to actually explain himself at all properly.Have you asked him to explain that?I think some of it's been unfair, what's been directed at Malcolm Roberts.
Yeah, fair enough. But Alex Jones was, you know, he denied that Sandy Hook even happened as a big conspiracy theory. So I think that might concern a few people.
Yeah, correct.I haven't had a real long talk because I have been away to actually sit down and talk to Malcolm, which I'll speak to him next week about it.But there's a lot that's been thrown out there that Alex Jones, he doesn't support, I think it was, sorry Laura, it's only what I've seen, it was only one aspect of something that I've said, but you've blown it completely out of proportion that he supports everything that Alex Jones has said, which is not the case.
No, but you want to know whether he supports Alex Jones on whether that conspiracy theory, whether he believes Sandy Hook was a conspiracy theory. So I'm not trying to blow it out of proportion.Surely you'd be wanting to know whether Malcolm Roberts thinks that's right.
There's a few issues here that have been raised, brought to my attention and until I can sit down and have a talk with Malcolm next week with regards to it to get to the bottom of the matter, I will do that next week when we're in Canberra.
Alright, I want to finish on this. This is Chris Binns.
We're going to build 8 ,500 new homes for Sydney. It's going to be beautiful.Tell me when.Rolling.
Sydney needs more homes and here's where thousands of them will go.

That is Chris Minns doing his best Donald Trump. What do you think of Chris Minns and his Trump impersonation?
Well, that's the first I've heard of it down the line, so it was very hard to get it.Chris, stick to being Chris Minns, OK?No -one can take off Donald Trump.Only...I tell you what, no, I take the back. The only one that could was Tina McQueen's grandson.
God, he's good. He's really good and he's only about 12.But anyway, Chris Minns, stick to being Chris Minns. There's only one Donald Trump.Pauline Hanson doesn't want to have a crack at doing a Donald Trump impersonation?I know my limitations, Laura, and I know when to stop.
OK.
On that note, thank you for your time.I think the first time on AM Agenda for a little while, at least. We will see you soon.Yeah.Yeah.Thanks, Laura.
