Hermitcraft 11: Episode 16 - THE OBSERVATORY!

Welcome back to the next episode of Hermitcraft, where we're going to be working on the observatory.I've got a pretty good shape going on here, although I'm going to be experimenting with this off on, but I am going to be taking this onto my creative server and experimenting there and kind of talking through the process.But before we do that, I want to bring your attention to this.There is one member of the Hermitcraft server who is currently got a grey name and a grey name means that they're AFK.And so far, every time someone's gone AFK, I've had to do something to them.Now, an AFK hermit is a time -sensitive operation.

We don't know why they're AFK, and we certainly don't know if they're actually just at their keyboard but not playing Minecraft.So, we've got to go and do the rocket test first to see if they're actually not there.But it's always good to make sure you're prepared for what you want to do.Now, we've already moved a bunch of AFK people, and with Joel in particular, he just loves dried ghasts.So, I'm gonna go and pick up every dried ghast that I've got in my nether farm.just in case he is actually afk.

Follow the end rod trail, all the way to the gold farm.Dried ghast, that should be enough.And back we go.Where do Joel live?Probably down this one.Look at all those names from the charity event, up on signs in the nether hub.

Right, that's decked out, so this must be Joel.Gem.Where is he?He's somewhere around here.Is he underground?Oh, let's find him first.

Is he - where is he?Is he in this building?This weird Domey building?Hello.

Uh, there must be a secret way in here.

Yeah, he's got all sorts of secrets.This place isn't what it seems.

I don't know the secret, though.

Uh -oh.Do we have to go in the secret way in his other base?

Oh, yeah, we already know a secret way.

Yeah, he's got tunnels.

There's a secret way in here.Yeah, look.

Yeah, how kind.Now we go through the rainbow tunnels.

What's Joel's plan?I know.I don't know.

Oh, he's AFK -ing a farm.

He's actually inside a chest right now.

Okay, I think that kind of proves he's not at his desk.Yeah, he's afk.All right.Well, this is great news.Well, I've got way more dry ghasts than that.

Wait, are you, are you gonna fill just his whole room?

Yep.When will they learn not to go afk?

I can hear Joel already.

I can hear him already.Oh, for goodness sake.I'm in dry ghasts.And then he'll be like, why?Why are they doing this?So pointless.

He doesn't even, he doesn't even respond.

No, no.It almost makes it better though.Did I bring enough dried gas?That's the question.

You know, when he's like looking at a chest, he's very not there.It means he's probably just gone to make lunch or something and he's going to come back.

Yeah.

So we've got to be quick.This is actually gonna be a tough tough one to fill we have to log off.

Oh, he'll see it in chat who was on Yeah, unfortunately, we can't clear that imagine if we just texted Lizzie to like F3D.

We're gonna need another batch I think shall I go?Yeah.Yeah, I'll keep placing and then I'll text Lizzie to see if she can Okay, Lizzie stalling him.He is eating lunch and she's yeah, she's she's stalling him and he'sshe's ready to do f3d when we log out So we got to be extra quick.We got to be so quick now.

So quick.

He's just eating lunch Yeah, Lizzy is stalling him right now.Is this all we got?We have five minutes hurry up hurry up hurry up hurry up.It's harder to place when I'm panicking I know I know I know I was working lovely and systematically.This was quite therapeutic for a little while.

It's a good thing you text her.We would have genuinely got caught.

Yeah, I know.We would have got caught.Okay, I've got one stack left.

I have an extra stack for you.

I hope he doesn't have flashback running.That would be embarrassing.

That would be embarrassing.That's the only thing that could screw us up right now.

We have four minutes.I think Joel has a point, though.He has one very good question, which is why.What?

Log out.And then I'm going to text Lizzie.Clear chat.OK, wait, can we get out like here?No.Oh, my gosh.

This is the slowest exit ever.

I know.

Ah, get me out.Three minutes.OK, time to log out.I can't get on the server for a bit.OK, so I'm back on the server a few hours later.Joel is on and has said nothing.

However, Lizzie was such a good sport.Check this out.She left his setup exactly how it was.So I guess I guess that is exactly where we have to leave that because I think that's all we're gonna get for now.So it's time to start working on the base.I've decided that the arches that I've done.

I free -handed this by the way.It's probably not a perfect circle, but it looks pretty good.But I did notice that it's probablyone block too small so I'm just gonna go over it again with smooth quartz and it will just give me probably the correct arch that I'm looking for and then what I think I'm gonna do now is take this to creative that's where it needs to go I've also decided that I think the telescope wants to go that way purely because the island juts out in this direction so it starts here goes up the observatory if it was pointing that way, then the whole build is gravitating towards the right.But I kind of want to balance this section out by having the telescope go that way.So it's almost like a mermaid, I guess, like a mermaid laying down, looking up and then pointing to the sky or something.

So it's got a good flow to it.So let's take this over and start working on it in creative.I'm really terrible at my job because I couldn't help myself.I've already filled in the skeleton and added a few bits and I decided to stop because it was getting a little bit too far.So the roof gave me quite a bit of a problem.As you can see, this is not a sphere because I've got the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 structures that all make their way into the middle.

There's probably a technical term for this architecturally, but I don't know it.Now, I couldn't do this by hand and I was really struggling.Turns out, Axiom to the rescue building really has changed significantly with this tool So what I did was I used this tool the modeling modeling one I went to smart surface any gap you can fill using this tool Perfectly.It's an incredible tool and it was exactly what I needed for thisSo all I did was basically right -click in between each of these and it fills it in it wasn't perfect so I then had to go in and kind of remove a couple blocks just to make sure it wasn't over squaring itself in places and Here is where we ended up from there I'm adding a few shapes to the structure just to give it something else rather than just one big blob So we've got a tower here, probably going to have a bridge that connects it.We've got a couple of elements here, and it definitely needs a couple of elements at the front.

But what I want to do now is this, this little pokey stick here.This is going to be our telescope.What there normally is on observatories and telescopes is a big gap that runs all the way through, and that is so that the telescope can hinge and follow the sky all the way around.So, I'm gonna just take this element here, and either side of it, two blocks.So now, I'm gonna open this up.This is where the telescope is going to come out of.

I think that's only just wide enough.And there's plenty of space in here for all the mobs.Okay, so from here, we need to create a cone shape.And this is what I mean about Minecraft building having changed dramatically with Axiom because I can just go here into shape Sphere I can do a cone and just right -click from here Check this out.We have a rudimentary Telescope now what if we add more rounding and then make it a bit wider?This would have taken me an hour by hand now.

Hey, Ibe only four blocks at least where it connects it must only be four blocks that's looking pretty good now let's try and shift this in here Ah, dude, that looks awesome.All right, let's reduce the rounding.Now, what we've got to do is make sure it connects around about here, which is where I want to stand and look into the telescope.So, we've got to now just fiddle with the height of this to make sure it looks pretty cool going out the top.That's pretty impressive.

We just need to make sure we get the scale right.So, let's go to the extremes.This is too big and this is too small.So, we'll know pretty quickly around here, maybe 7.7 seems to be the right diameter.Now I think we do some texturing.

This is one option where it goes from grey all the way up to quartz.It could just be because there's no detailing right now, but I think that could work.I want to try a bunch of different options.Okay, so this is where I landed after some experimenting and this wasn't working for me. I tried orange.Definitely not.So then I moved over to a grey.

Maybe a grey would work.No.That's when I got distracted with making a telescope.Which I think is pretty cool.On a red one.And I was feeling the red one.

I'll be honest with you.I think I could have made the red one work.But then I tried purple.And I don't know why.I've never really worked with purple before.And I liked it a lot.

This is where this build has ended.up after lots of trial and error That's where it landed.I am in love with with the telescope design we got a big old cog here some little cogs with wheels that go around i can imagine this like spinning i mean mechanically it makes no sense at all like mechanically like this is what what is this is a magic floating gear that like this this is where it pivots from i don't it doesn't make sense but that doesn't matter because it looks awesome now i know that this is a lot of purple don't get me wrong this is a lot of purple but you need to trust the process here and back me on this because i think once we add like a structure that goes round and down to like here i mean just very roughly and horribly built once i've got like these structures that go Dormers that go all the way around that reduces the amount of crying obsidian that I've got I Think that this build will look amazing And how often do you get to make something purple the astral observatory and Majora's Mask was purple or bluey purple?whatever it was it was it had a whole host of colors and I got to use the respawn anchor and detail it and with a little glowstone bit.I just thought that was really clever.So, I mean, there's a long way to go detailing wise here, but this is the first time I've had a structure for this thing, and it looks pretty cool.

From here, we'll then add a bunch more accessory builds to it.I've got like a tower here with a bridge that will connect.But for now, I want to get this structure made.And for that, I need, by the looks of things, a ton of pale oak.and dark oak.Like, a real ton of it.

And also, if you go inside here, with all this crying obsidian, it's kind of weird.I don't know if - I must be able to use this, right?The crazy amount of dripping purple drops.I think this could work.This could work.I can work with this.

If you don't like the purple, tough.I think this is probably gonna divide people.I like it, and I think once I break it up a bit, maybe even, like, just adding a pattern of swirls as well that goes in it.It just needs to - I need to reduce the purple, and I already know that.Also, did you know, I found - I found this out from Jem the other day, that you can just double click, press both buttons at the same time, And it replaces.How did I not know this?

In creative mode, you just left left and right click replaces the block.I've been doing this forever like an idiot.All right, let's go and get this on the server.I've got a lot of blocks to get my hands on.But yeah, look, look at that.That pattern probably works.

There's there's more to do here.But this is a fantastic start.I didn't like where that was going.I love where this one's going.Right, let's take this back to the server.We're on the server and there's the build.

All of that has got to come down because I've changed the colour completely.I've spent the last few hours gathering the materials.Lots and lots of materials.Pale oak is by far the biggest need, plus dark oak.I mean really there's a lot of stuff.I've been farming away for quite some time.

So there is nothing left to say except let's do this!do this that went pretty well four hours later and a straight build from start to finish I might add no breaks you should probably take breaks don't sit down for four hours straight do as I say not as I do we have got ourselves a a very cool looking telescope.I haven't waxed this but it is not aging very quickly so I have to kind of snag this or just let it age as much as possible then wax it.Now something kind of funny happened during the creation of this.While I was spending four hours building this, Scar was spending six hours building that.A literal planet.

in the sky, in the background of my observatory.But my observatory is looking at nothing.So there's this weird thing going on where there could have been something for the observatory to look at, but it is over there in the shopping district.This changes nothing, of course.I already decided that the telescope needed to point that way, and that is still the case.Even if the planet was over there, I'd still want the telescope pointing this way.

Like I said, it balances out the build and the profile of this structure.I seem to be a little bit obsessed with bases that could explode.Now, these are amazing.These are amazing blocks, but if you right click them, they will explode because they are respawn anchors and they are charged on top of that.But this little gold speck is what I really needed for this build.I'm fully expecting some disasters.

Sometimes your builds take a giant leap in progress, and I think that's what this episode has done.With all the prep around it, with the moat and the terrain, it was feeling like I was promising this build forever and not delivering.Then all of a sudden, in one big swoop, here we have it.and I can see very clearly where this build is going to go in the future.But I have, unfortunately, depleted a lot of my stocks from in here.I would not cross this line.

This was not here earlier.Is this what?Okay, look.Mumbo joined earlier when I was just about to start recording and he said, end crystals looking cool, G, and left.I had no idea what he was talking about.Let's, um, have a look.

There is a dispenser pointed at your crystals.Was this Mumbo?Please stop.Grian, do not activate that dispenser.I wouldn't cross this line.Oh, yikes.

Oh, yikes!Do not activate that dispenser.So, there's a dispenser pointing directly, oh no, directly at the end crystals.I, how do I check what's in there without getting too close?How did he set it up without setting it off?Is this what they call in the business checkmate?

Let's see.from the other side.Seriously, don't cross this line.If you cross the line, the ticker will start.Green, you'll need to be careful.Don't come too close.

You can never come here.Do not activate that dispense.Now, is this a bluff?Is this a bluff of massive proportions?How do I get to that dispenser?Oh, man.

Well, I guess I just can't go here anymore.That's it.Checkmate.Base, base you cannot go into.Too dangerous.I can't risk it.

I don't think I've got it in me to go and make all of those end crystals again.And I made it without any disasters.Can't even get close.I can't go close to break it because that will set off all of the others.Now here's the thing.I've worked with Skulk sensors.

Oh no.I set it off.I thought it was a bluff.I can't believe I accidentally walked that little bit too close.It wasn't even connected to anything.Cheers for that Mumbo.

He set up a whole timer under here in the water no less Here's here's what gave it away.Here's what gave it away I heard my nautilus under here somewhere, and I thought to myself mobs Trigger these things all the time all the time So there was there was that I was like well a mob is more likely to be to activate all this and set it off.So if it truly was connected, it would have probably already been exploded.And then secondly, I don't believe you can make this very easily without accidentally setting it off yourself.These things are notoriously easy.mess up with without just tons of wool.

Nevertheless, well played.Actually, I actually forgot while I was going in there now.You really thought I would do that?Don't worry Mumbo, I waxed your chains for you, just in case you forgot.So both parts of my base can very easily explode.I'm surprised that during the construction, I didn't have any accidents.

Of this and that, have I just gotten better at being careful?Because nothing has set this off yet, despite Mumbo giving it his best shot.And building this, I was very careful and methodical about making sure I didn't accidentally click any of these.Okay, well, there's also something we need to do.As I didn't really expect it, but I did run out of pale oak log, and I had to borrow a little bit from Etho.So I need to go and pay him back really quickly.

When you're in time -lapse mode in your building, you don't really want to have to stop for two hours to chop down a bunch of wood.So let's grab our diamonds and fly on over past the most magnificent planet.Look at the... what is it?Well, I don't know what he's called.The rings with all the debris in them, the candles.That's a lot of candles.

Watched him build this it looked painful get it right here is one of ethos many modules So we'll put that in there so that shows me how many of these I have taken and then I guess we'll Give him another two for good luck.Hopefully he's okay with that.Oh, maybe these two as well Let's just make sure he's well compensated for it That's a that's a lot of diamonds like he can get up to four out of these each time so in a pinch that was uh that was quite good i don't know how ethos mind works but this is a prettygood representation of it.A patchwork of ideas.Look at that, the observatory nestled between two enormous mountains.

We've got scars there, and then we've got tangos in the background.It's kind of low down for an observatory.I think it kind of wanted to be higher.So, where are we taking things next?Well, it's quite obvious to me what needs to happen next.I need to fill in the river, which is actually quite an arduous task.

I won't lie.I need to finish doing the terrain around these bits so I can fill it in with water better.But this is, it turns out, maybe not the most exciting job in the world.You have to work your way from the bottom, just placing.This might be a great stream activity.I'm not going to lie.

Just chat.for a bit and just place buckets and buckets of water.Thankfully, the new water kind of sorts itself out just as you place it fills in all the gaps.But on a moat such as this, yeah, it's going to take me a long time.But I think overall, that is a pretty good place to leave it for this episode.Some massive progress, a massive leap in the right direction.

a reinvigoration of my own excitement for the build.Finally, I have a structure for which I can build out of.I can create giant stained glass windows into these walls.I can build the additional structures.I can think about how I'm going to edit this roof to reduce the purple.I can think about what I want to do for the inside.
