Honey’s Lost Over 7 Million Users & Thousands of Vendors Since Megalag’s Exposé
This is wild. Thanks to one YouTuber, you have Honey now losing millions of users and thousands of vendors, and it might actually be about to get worse.Because in December of 2024, you had YouTuber Megalag accusing Honey, a browser extension and subsidiary of PayPal, of cookie stuffing.Basically, Honey is designed to automatically apply coupons and discount codes when you're shopping online. But what you had Megalag uncovering was that Honey was seemingly crediting itself with sales even when it wasn't applying coupons.Refunneling money content creators should have received back to PayPal.
And it even allegedly allowed vendors to control which discount codes users saw by hiding getting better ones from them. And the fallout from this has been huge. It's gone from 20 million users on Google's web store to around 12 million. You even had Google updating its own store policies in response to prohibit link manipulation, while also mandating that extensions have to disclose affiliate reattribution.
Also brands like Rakuten Advertising removed it from its network. And you saw that move alone, costing it access to 2000 vendors.Though, what a lot of people haven't talked about is that it has since reinstated Honey after rewriting its rules, similar to Google. But still reportedly, Honey also lost access to another 5 ,000 retailers on top of that. And while you had PayPal trying to get a class action lawsuit, partially backed by legal, legal dismissed, a judge has denied that motion. So if this goes to trial, who knows what else we could find out or what else might get exposed.
So hey, I'll just stay in the loop.
