Investigation launched after children escape from kindergarten | 9 News Australia
Good evening, an investigation has been launched into a Fitzroy North Kindergarten after two young children escaped through a fence and went on an adventure for more than a kilometre.
The four and five -year -olds crossed busy roads, navigated trams and traffic before making it all the way to one of their homes.Jack Ward has our exclusive report.
Two unsupervised kids skipping down busy St George's Road. The pair just four and five years old.
It is scary as a parent in terms of how the kids were found and discovered for however long they were going for.
Adults were bewildered by what they were witnessing on Monday morning just after 11 o 'clock. The young boy and girl all by themselves after escaping through a playground fence at Isabel Henderson Kindergarten, sparking a frantic search. A lady came up to us and she asked us if we've seen two kids walking around the area. We were really confused. I said, do you want us to help you? Yeah, not sure. A good Samaritan called police after spotting the children who eventually arrived at one of their homes more than a kilometre away. They reportedly watched K -pop demon hunters while a confused parent rang the kinder. I just shudder to think how these parents felt, but I shudder to think how other parents in the centre are sending their children there today and tomorrow and the day after. The Kindergarten has told The Age this is really devastating for the families involved and for us. We are a very transparent and open organisation and we take these things very seriously. The organisation was less transparent today, refusing to speak about the incident with Nine News. The regulator is now investigating how these young children managed to get through this fence and say they won't hesitate in taking strong action to ensure child safety. It breaches yet again the expectation that adults' parents are entrusting their children to other adults to keep them safe, care for them.An adventure for these two, a terrifying breach of safety for everyone else.
Okay, we'll go live now to Jack who's in Fitzroy North tonight.Jack, you spoke to parents this afternoon. What was their reaction?
Look, Alicia, while of course shocked, the parents that I spoke with at the kindergarten gate this afternoon were universally supportive of the kinder and its staff. The staff have been speaking with children about the importance of safety and the need to speak up if they're worried about something or see a problem that needs to be fixed. It's unclear how long the regulator's investigation will take, but I'm told it's going to be very comprehensive.Alicia?
Okay, Jack Ward, thank you.
