Jon Stewart TERRIFIES Republicans With STUNNING Prediction
It's easy and understandable to slip in an nihilism watching how this administration is tearing the country apart with utter impunity. But there are reasons to stay hopeful.
Democratic governors around the country and and perhaps even some Republican governors who are very deliberately saying hey Let's take this this government out for a spin and see if we can do with people do for people, right? And and Zoran Mamdani in New York City again same thing now That's not to say you necessarily agree with their policies or whatever But this idea that the government is designed for the people is very much back on the table But I'd go back a step and say that this is not just Trump.I actually don't think Trump saw something unexpected I think he's a really simple character. He is not a politician. He's a salesman. And he recognized that 40 years of Republican rhetoric had created a population that he could exploit, because that's what he does.
He exploits people. And he did that and he did it very effectively. But it's not just that the government sort of amorphously stop doing things for people.I actually think that was a deliberate decision on the part of certain Republican politicians who took over the party in the in the 1990s, especially, but certainly were behind Reagan's election in the 80s in 1980.And they they set up the system in such a way that the American people would no longer have a say in it.So things like tax cuts, you know, people said they love tax cuts.
What that really did was it managed to create real deficits that made it harder for the government to do things for people. And it divorced people from having a say in their government, having, you know, being behind their government at the same time that we began to do everything based on extraordinary deficits. So the money coming into the government actually didn't have a lot to do with tax dollars. It had to do with how much the government could borrow. Now, the more the American people ended up not liking what was the governmentwas doing, the more that the Republicans in charge of the systems strip those systems down so that the people had less and less and less to say.
So by 1986, you are already hearing from the Republicans under Reagan, the idea of ballot integrity, the idea you had to go into the rolls and clean them up because they were not legitimate. So what do we get?We get Florida does that in 1998.and in the process of cleaning up the voter rolls, knocks about 100 ,000 people off the voting rolls in Florida in 1999.you know something happened in florida in two thousand i can't remember what that was but then you think all the way through you get um citizens united which is you know makes money pour into the system well who does that benefit people who have a ton of money you get the gerrymandering extraordinary gerrymandering that makes it almost impossible for democrats to win you get the chevron decision which removes agency from agencies.Right.
Right.
So so one of the things that that has done is it skewed the system in a certain direction. But it's also, I think, encouraged Americans to feel like they don't have agency in their government. And one of the things that you have seen since Trump's was elected the second time was people saying, hey, wait, if we turn up at Tesla dealerships, we can actually hurt the Tesla brand. And you know, when we you know, when Jimmy Kimmel got got on knocked off the air, you had people saying, Okay, then we're not going to buy your product. And all of a sudden, he's back on the air.And people are learning that they do have agency.
And that muscle is strengthening in a way that it did in the 1890s, for example, in a very similar period that led to the progressive era.Do you truly believe Medicare for all is viable?
I know it's viable is because I've taken this campaign all over the state.I was in Houghton, which is in the Upper Peninsula's Upper Peninsula.for us to make sure that we're having conversations about what the world could look like.We need a galvanizing ideal that brings people to the table about what they want. And right now, people are being destroyed by our healthcare system. You're talking about deductibles that are $6 ,000, and that's putting people into medical debt to the tune of 100 million people, $225 billion in medical debt in this country, in the richest, most powerful country in the world, as they burn a billion dollars a day on war that we don't need to be fighting.
So when you sit down and have a conversation and say, hey, listen, I'm a doctor.I literally trained in this system.I promise you we could do this right if we were willing to forego the corporations that tell us what we cannot have and the politicians who tell us what we should not fight for.So yeah, I want to fight a fight so everybody can have health care.If I accomplish nothing less in my career in politics, I want everybody in this country to have health care.Imagine what that would feel like for people.
What I do care about is the direction that American politics is heading, right? And there is definitely a little bit of room for excitement there. We have, for the first time ever, a positive trajectory, a positive outlook. You have guys like Abdul El -Sayed, Chris Robb, Cori Bush, people that I'm going to be leaning into, that have more representative politics, that have a real likelihood of winning their elections, changing the American Democratic Party for the first time into a party that is more responsive to class -first politics.more responsive to the politics that revolves around the majority, the real majority, the American working class.
The Trump administration wants us to give up, to see what they're doing, see them getting away with it, and to just accept that this is the way things are right now.But this is not, and can never be, normal.Fascism is a death cult.As members of the Trump administration are gradually finding out, you can never be white enough for white supremacists or Christian enough for Christian nationalists. These people will and always do eat themselves alive. But in the meantime, we need to take care of ourselves and each other.
The more evil this administration becomes, the more people are waking up to the possibility of real change in the opposite direction. If they can fill concentration camps full of immigrants and increase military spending up to $1 .5 trillion, well, then we can have Medicare for all.We can do a Green New Deal.We can completely overhaul the immigration system.and then slash military spending. That's just the way that it works.
Democrats can put money where it can make a real difference in a material reality.See, Republicans have always loved spending taxpayer money, mostly in the form of giving it back to the rich. It's about time Democrats reminded voters that every time you hear we can't afford all the things that we need to live in a less depressing, exhausting, and existentially terrifying society, that's not destiny. We can actually change it.If you enjoyed that, make sure that you never miss another video by subscribing. And if you want a little more, consider hitting the join button and becoming an actual member.
