Juno News presses Carney and Smith on illegal international students, Carney left clueless!

Hi everybody, Alexa Poza with Juno News.I'm here on location at Red Deer, Alberta, where Mark Kearney just made a housing announcement.Now with being independent media, getting here is half the battle.Getting my question in was very difficult, but it appears as though Mark Kearney isn't afraid to answer tough questions from the independent media.Now, I asked him about international students and how they're protesting here in Alberta because they felt a rug was pulled from underneath them for not getting work permits after spending tens of thousands of dollars on their education.

But what do you say to people who say Canada's too full, we need to slow down the immigration?

Okay, that is good question, like Canada's too full.Okay, you guys are right.

So I'm just curious, if they do say no to your bid to stay, will you go home?

It depends on that time, because first, my thought and our all friends' thought is to just gain three years' experience, which we are not even getting.

It's a very important question, though.If the government says, OK, your time's up, will you go home?

I don't know.Why are you asking these kind of questions?It's just because it's the law, and that's why you guys are here protesting.

But after asking him that question, it appeared as though he has no idea what's going on in our country regarding that.However, Premier Daniel Smith essentially said, if you don't have a legal work permit, you need to leave.Prime Minister, are you prepared to deport the students of Portage College who are hunger striking to stay in Canada despite having no permit to remain?And to Premier Smith, are you prepared to start decertifying diploma mills in Alberta?

I'm not familiar with a specific case.I'm afraid and I would but so and we have we have processes to make those decisions and they need to be They need to be followed and if people are not here, you know, they don't have authorization to stay in there Don't have right to claim asylum.Then there's a process that would be followedBut I'm not familiar with the details of the question.Thank you.

Our view is that if you come here as an international student and your visa expires and you don't have permanent residency, you need to go home.But it also goes to the Prime Minister's earlier point that if those students have the skills that we need, then we're best positioned to be able to offer them permanent residency.At the moment, we only have 6 ,400 spots.I think we've got 40 ,000 people who have sought permanent residency from us.And so that's why I think we need a bit of a better balance.Quebec is able to choose about 45 ,000 of their permanent residents through a different program.

And so if you're looking at the scale, we think that we need to be able to have more autonomy to do that.And then that would allow us to address some of the pressures that we're hearing about in the news, and also make sure that those who go through those programs with the hope of getting permanent residency, as long as we can identify a pathway where there's a job, that is one that cannot be filled by an Alberta worker, then I think that we can work with the federal government to find more opportunities for us to make those choices.

I am for Alberta independence.I want to just sow support for that and I want Carney to see that.I hope I get to see him.I hope he realizes that we're serious here.

My mom passed five years ago back in Windsor, Ontario.We were the first ones in Canada, back at Canada, that stood up.We blocked one lane and we got thrown in jail.whatnot, beating up whatnot, but nothing compared to what happened to your coots, man.And when mum passed, and then when the Canadian government said we're not allowed to travel, I just said to myself, what am I doing?I've got to travel across all of our provinces.

And I got through six of them.And I'm still standing up.And I don't know if I'm going back to Ontario.I don't think I am.I've beenI've been in Alberta for the last two years standing up for all of our provinces and territories to stand in independence and especially to stand up for our children, Mother Earth, animals and us all.

It wouldn't be very nice.I would like to see him change, but I don't think he will.And I want him to know we mean it.We're serious out here in Alberta.
