Michigan’s Explosive Diarrhea Outbreak Has Thousands Sick and Experts Stumped

An explosive diarrhea parasite is on the rise in the United States right now.You've got nearly a thousand people in Michigan right now dealing with weeks of this watery, and again, I'm quoting the CDC here, explosive diarrhea, and nobody knows where it's coming from.It's the biggest outbreak of this thing in the state's history, and it's a parasite called Cyclospora.It's microscopic, it lives in your poop, and it generally gets into your food when farms water their crops with contaminated water.

And while Michigan normally sees about 50 cases a year, as of Wednesday, you're looking at 992 cases with around 40 people hospitalized.And it's not stay and put.One Ohio County right across the country it already has over 300 cases and there are investigations open in 28 other states.What you're seeing freaking a lot of people out is they cannot find the source right now.This is a parasite that's nearly impossible to grow in a lab.Some tests, they don't even catch it.

And by the time that people get sick.the food's long gone.

And while you've had past outbreaks getting traced back to imported raspberries and basil, this one right now, it's a total mystery.And so at least for now, you've got officials saying, skip the pre -washed bag salads, buy whole heads of lettuce, toss the outer leaves, and cook your veggies when you can.Because this thing, it clings to your food, and a quick rinse, it might not save you.So yeah, wash your salad like your gut depends on it, because right now, they kind of do.
