Ukrainian drones have struck the Moscow oil refinery, penetrating Russia's layered air defence system and triggering a major fire at the facility.Residents across Moscow and the surrounding region reported a large -scale drone attack early on June 18.While Russian authorities claimed that 43 drones were intercepted, several unmanned aerial vehicles reportedly reached their intended targets.Videos shared on social media show multiple fires burning on the refinery's grounds.Massive columns of thick black smoke were seen rising above the city and were visible from several districts of Moscow.Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that air defence units were continuing to respond to what he described as a massive drone attack.

According to him, several drones managed to reach the Moscow oil refinery and emergency services were working to eliminate the consequences of the strike.The Moscow oil refinery is one of the most important fuel facilities in the Russian capital.Located approximately 15 kilometers from the Kremlin, it supplies around 40 percent of Moscow's gasoline demand and roughly half of the city's diesel consumption.The refinery also produces aviation fuel, including fuel used for military purposes.According to Kremlin -linked news agency RIA Novosti, the attack on Moscow's energy infrastructure is being described as the largest of its kind in the past two years.This comes just days after a previous Ukrainian drone strike on the same refinery on June 16.
