Prime Minister Mark Carney has at least five bilateral meetings today on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France. For the latest on this, let's bring in CTV's Rachel Aiello, and I think a lot of eyes are going to be on the prime minister and whether or not him and the president are going to have a chance to speak at this summit.

Yeah, absolutely. So, what I can tell you on that front is that while there is no formal sit -down bilateral meeting scheduled between Prime Minister Mark Carney and U .S.President Donald Trump, there have been two occasions so far today that we've seen them informally have some face time.First was this morning at a working luncheon of the G7 leaders there on the sidelines. We could hear bits and pieces of their conversation.

It really did, Jamie, feel like more of a casual chat between Trump and Carney. Some joking, it seemed, about Macron leaving his watch on the table. But then it did seem that the prime minister did turn to a bit more business, making a comment in reference to the Chinese EVs coming into Canada. And I suspect this is in direct response to the U .S.threatening new tariffs on this country as a result of forced labor concerns.

The prime minister indicating this country does have a cap on the number of those vehicles coming in.Trump then indicating that he liked that. Now, whether that will be enough diplomatically to move the needle remains to be seen. But then as the two of them made their way out to what's known as the family photo, that big photo where you have all the G7 leaders and others attending stand behind a gorgeous backdrop, take a photo, it was Trump and Carney walking out together. So there was an opportunity there as well for the two of them to have some face time, to have some conversation. What exactly was discussed wasn't necessarily picked up.

So certainly there has been some opportunity for the two of them at the G7 to chit -chat.What comes from that remains to be seen. But on another front, it's worth noting, as well, one of the big focuses today so far has been Russia's war in Ukraine. We had Prime Minister Mark Carney meet with Ukraine's Zelensky in a formal bilateral meeting coming out of that campaign.committing two additional sanctions on Russia.targeting what this country considers Russia's war machine, trying to add pressure on Vladimir Putin to end his war in Ukraine, Canada reaffirming its commitment to supporting Ukraine through the war, as long as it persists, and into the rebuild process.

And just lastly, on that front, it does seem that the pressure on Russia is coming from multiple fronts today, because we had Trump in a bilateral meeting with Qatar, picked up by our colleague Michael Couture, who was on the ground, indicating that Trump said, quote, Russia should make a deal.a lot going on at the G7 this morning and we're going to keep an eye on it through the afternoon as well, Jamie.
