Another Andrew, Mountbatten -Windsor.Massive bombshell just dropped.

0:04

It's absolutely insane.33 ,000 emails were presented to the palace in 2020, highlighting his bad behaviour. What's so shocking is this stuff has been there for six years. It's just part of, I'm afraid, a huge cover -up of the King. What did you know? When did you know it?

0:21

All the evidence I'm getting is that people have been reminded of their obligations of confidentiality, their pensions, etc, to turn screws going on to prevent people from speaking out. This scandal is getting nearer and nearer to the crown. They're on the ropes. The whole thing has been a giant cover up.Yeah, well, I think several bombshells.I mean, one is that he's been investigated for being inappropriate with a waitress at Ascot 20 years ago.

1:07

There's stories coming out now that 33 ,000 emails were presented to the palace in 2020 highlighting his bad behavior abroad as an envoy. This is material that was actually leaked from one of his business associates, Jonathan Rowlands, who was on these trips with him and actually he was getting diplomats to basically do things for Jonathan Roland's business as opposed to promote British trade. And I think what's so shocking is this stuff has been there for six years. There's no sense that anything's happened.I mean, nothing. They didn't go to the police for this material.

1:43

They didn't discipline Andrew. It's just part of, I'm afraid, a huge cover up, which I talk about in entitled, but clearly is far bigger than we realized.

1:54

So the palace knew.and seemingly they did absolutely nothing about it.They were just happy for Andrew to be, well, his bad affairs behaviour, they knew about it, they were warned, and Queen Elizabeth said, okay. That's fine.

2:12

Yes.I mean, they'll be hiding behind the material was given to the Lord Chamberlain, Lord Peel. He'll be the full guy. They'll blame him. They'll say he didn't produce it to anyone. And so how can they be blamed for this?

2:22

But it's it's a long, long history of the palace trying to suppress and contain this story. And they did it by denying it.And then by issuing legal threats to media organizations. We have the famous case of Amy Roback at ABC saying that she'd wrote a whole story on Virginia Gifford and Andrew years before the story broke, and the palace shut it down by threatening ABC with removing access to the royals. The fact is, the stories about Andrew and the Rolands have been in the papers for 20 years, and actually some of those stolen emails went to the mail on Sunday. They've been writing stories about them for years, so have Blomberg and the BBC.

3:05

So it actually shouldn't be surprising to the palace. And time and time again, they've been scandals.Sarah Ferguson caught selling access to Andrew in 2010 for half a million pounds. The Selman Turk case in 2022 at the High Court with 1 .3 million pounds paid to the York family they can't account for.And nothing ever happened. No one was ever disciplined.

3:27

There was never any statement. My book came out in August. There was absolutely no reaction from the palace except to say there was nothing new there. And I think what we do need and people have been calling the king saying you know what did you know when did you know it.He's not answering that, but he does need to talk now.He claims he's helping with police inquiries.

3:46

Well, what exactly is he doing?Because all the evidence I'm getting is that people have been reminded of their obligations of confidentiality, their pensions, etc.and basically the turn screws going on to prevent people from speaking out.Why wasn't this stuff passed to the police is I think the question he now really has to go public on.This scandal is getting nearer and nearer to the crown.I think you're absolutely right, the Queen knew.

4:12

The Queen was involved in the decisions to pay the harsh money to Virginia Gifford. So was Charles. When that story broke in the Sun, there was a sort of half -hearted sort of complaint by the Crown. But what the Sun had and what I got was exactly the same.I don't know if the sources were the same.So I think this is really getting serious for them.

4:34

They're on the ropes.

4:36

So if a senior royal is complaining about what's the normal protocol? So I'm working for, let's say, Prince Andrew.I've seen him slap a guy in the office.I've written a letter of complaints to the palace. What would they normally do in that situation?

4:58

Well, nothing would happen.I mean, there are countless stories of him almost running over, for example, policemen driving into the North Gate and then being told that there's no point complaining. He'll just run to mommy. He'll just make life difficult. They'll just make life difficult for you.And that's how he's got away with it for years.

5:15

But you're absolutely right. There should be a proper complaints procedure. One of the reasons that they haven't really investigated the complaints against Meghan and Harry for their bullying was because they would then have to investigate Andrew, who was far worse. So, but absolutely, there should be someone, whether it's someone in the Lord Chamberlain's office or someone in Parliament, let's say the Cabinet Office, who should be making a statement about this. And if they have been hiding this stuff, as everyone suspects, then they have to kind of fess up to it.I mean, I think this is the moment where they're going to have to say, look, I'm sorry, we haven't

5:50

behaved well.We haven't dealt with this in the right way. It's all going to change now. We're going to have a proper accountability and we're going to make sure this stuff goes to the police and they can properly investigate Andrew because it's all there in chapter and verse.

6:05

But if I was the whistleblower and I've gone and said, I work for Andrew, this is what I've seen him do, what's like it's happened to me then?Nothing happens to Andrew, but based on precedent that we've seen already, what's like it's happened to my position?

Well, I'm afraid you would no longer be doing this podcast.It's...Yes!Finally my way out.Well, the protection officers, you know, would be said, you're back on the street in Brixton. The ambassadors would get posted to Lagos.

6:33

I've heard countless stories. There's a story of a naval officer who reprimanded Andrew who complained about croutons in his salad and said, what are all these? And the naval officer said, that's not the way, you know, you shouldn't have a little wobbly about some croutons. And Andrew went and complained about him and the guy got sacked. So I've heard stories about an RAF commander at the base.Andrew was being handsy with the young RAF officer or NCO who was assigned to him.

7:05

The senior officer said, that's not the way to behave to a member of my staff.Andrew went and complained to his mom and the guy got moved. And that happens time and time again. The UKTI accountant who complained about the expenses going on general accounting, he's no longer working for UKTI.He got out.And that's why this is a whole endemic system.

7:29

Andrew was protected by the senior government ministers, by politicians, by civil servants, by diplomats. And that's why it's so important that we have a parliamentary inquiry and these guys have to talk on oath. They wouldn't talk to me.

7:49

You might have noticed I like to wear this gold watch, gold bangle and gold wedding ring.Gold is physical, it can't be hacked.digitally manipulated or printed into existence by governments. That's why I'm backing today's sponsor, The Pure Gold Company, which helps people buy UK minted gold coins like Britannia's and Sovereign's Tax -Free, and they've built a really strong reputation for their no pressure approach and expert guidance. Now they were even voted the UK's best gold broker. So if you wanna understand more about buying physical gold and whether it's right for you, download their free guide to buying gold at the link below.

By the way, mention my name, JJ, and for six months you'll get secure storage for free. And also remember, the value of gold can rise as well as fall.So if you're not sure about investing, please do seek independent advice.Well, Andrew basically is like a cancer now on the Royal Family. And yes, some of the allegations against him, they're just that, the allegations, it's all alleged, he denies wrongdoing, et cetera, et cetera. But how dangerous is this now for William?

8:47

He's going to be the next king, obviously. What is he going to have to do to separate himself from this cancerous Andrew?Well, it is very dangerous for him.

8:56

And I mean, he's really in a fight with his father to say, look, deal with this problem.Don't pass the buck to me, which is what the Queen did to Charles. And you know, you, I'm afraid, will have to, your legacy will be shaped by how you deal with this. You need to deal with him.If necessary, you need to fall on your sword. And if, you know, say, look, for health reasons, I'm stepping back.

9:17

I'm not abdicating, but we're going to move to a regency. And I think we are in a stage of a transitional monarchy at the moment.People are listening to William in a way. He's asserting his authority in a way he wasn't before. He's doing the investitures. They're trying to push him to do a lot more of the foreign tours.

9:34

And again, there's a conflict between him and Charles.Charles is a hard worker.and he is very, very sort of… conscientious. There are real concerns that William, known as work -shy Willie, is just not pulling his weight.

9:50

Really?I've not heard that about William. So people think he's work -shy, do they?

9:54

Yeah. The argument he makes is, look, I can be doing good work without opening up some sort of hospital somewhere. But he insists on doing the school runs.He doesn't like doing all the boring bits. There's a story of when the Queen was old and quite ill, she asked William to step in and do something for her and he refused. And she ended up doing it herself.

10:22

Goodness gracious.

10:23

So there are real tensions there, completely different attitudes to what the monarch should be doing. And you know, William's line is the most important thing I can do is to be there for my family. We've got generations of dysfunctional families in the royal family because the mums weren't very attentive, shall we say.And I think we need to get it right. That's his argument.

10:45

I think we'd agree with that.Yeah.

10:48

Well, I mean, absolutely. You know, we've got to get the work -life balance right. But there are plenty of people who can't, you know, have got to come into work even though they've got kids.

10:55

Even though they hate their job and they hate their producers.Trying to get sacked.Well, would this not be a good reason for William to bring back Harry into the family so Harry can start doing some of these things he doesn't want to do?

11:10

Well, I think, you know, there are plans to try and open up.I mean, they've talked about slimming down the monarchy. They realize it's too slim. And at the moment, we have, I think, apart from the Prince and Princess of Wales, we have no one under 60 who's now doing royal duties. So Edward's getting on, and Sophie.I mean, they're carrying a lot of the weight with Princess Anne and Timothy Lawrence.

11:32

And of course, you know, poor old Duke of Gloucester.and Kent, they're still sort of in their 80s and 90s going. So that's why they're pushing Lady Louise. They're nervous about Beatrice and Eugenie. They yo -yo there. One minute they're in, one minute they're out.

11:47

Should they go to Ascot?Should they go to Sandringham?Should they go to Peter Phillips' wedding? And I think they need to make a decision there.I mean, I'm amazed they haven't done their due diligence.I mean, it would be very easy to get the girl the women, to produce an audit of their business activities, the Royal Register that I and others have been calling for for years.

12:08

And then they could say, look, we're not doing anything. We're not using our titles. We're not being paid to promote Saudi banks. And we're not exploiting our royal status. And then they can go to the garden parties, et cetera. The problem is they are doing that.

12:24

And so they're really short of figures.Edward's son is still at school. He's quite shy.I mean, poor old Lady Louise is still at university. And in some ways, the problem is the people who want to do these jobs are the people who are totally unsuitable to do them, the sort of Meghan Markles. And the people who don't want to do them, you know, who kind of retire back, the sort of Lord Lindley's and Lady Sarah Chateau, who are now sort of being kind of courted, you know, clearly want to have their own careers.

But yeah, the really interesting question will be, Harry, and if The problem with Harry is he wants to stick close to his kids. He's not going to leave California. So it's going to be fleeting visits, odd little things. He's testing out various options. But his charities are all under investigation.Invictus is scandal prone.

14:04

It's not looking good for him.

14:06

Well, what makes Meghan Markle not suitable for the role?

14:12

Narcissism.Inability to get on with people. Not being able to read a room.

14:46

Absolutely.Lots of things. And in fact, Norman Baker and myself are launching a transparency campaign, particularly for royal finances, but also for parliamentary accountability. It would be very simple for Parliament to say, look, we should be able to ask questions about, for example, royal finances.I mean, the Public Accounts Committee is already looking at the Crown Estates. We should be able to review the sovereign grant.

15:11

It was kind of pushed through by three people, including George Osborne. Many of these people end up with the sort of Order of Merit and Knight of the Garter.I mean, they've done their bit to help the royal family. And I mean, if we had a proper parliamentary oversight, they could certainly – we should be ableask questions, for example, about Andrew as a trade envoy. There have been a series of questions put by Rosie Boycott, former editor of the Independent, by people like George Fuchs, who's a former senior Labour cabinet minister.

15:36

They've been very evasive, their responses. There should be, I think, a parliamentary spokesman for Parliament, for the Crown, who responds on their behalf. There's no reason why We shouldn't, as I say, have a royal register like the Parliamentary Register. That could be set up by Parliament. And Parliament could actually amend the Freedom of Information Act so that the royal family are no longer exempt. There is a small public interest aspect to some members of the royal family.

16:06

But in all the time I've been using FOI, it's never, ever come down against the royal family.Yeah, I think there are just so many things. They could amend also the sealing of royal wills, which have only been sealed since 1911.So really, simple legislation that could be pushed through in an afternoon could give the appearance of more transparency. They could move the Duchy of Lancaster and Cornwall estates back into the Crown, to the Treasury. At the moment, we have this extraordinary situation where the sovereign grant is based on a percentage of the income from the estates, which is enormous because they're getting huge sums from wind farms around the seabed.

16:49

And of course, charging for ambulances to be parked, places for prisons which are empty, et cetera. This isn't a good look for the royal family. They could say, look, Buckingham Palace has just been paid for by the taxpayer, £368 million. There's no one actually living there. So there's no security threat.Open that up to the public.

17:09

Let people be able to visit it.And let them also use the gardens, which are completely empty and not used.

17:16

Those are all great points actually, but then why aren't they doing this?Like, they've just given a million different ways that...Parliament can make a difference. Why is no one doing this?

17:26

Because Parliament is scared of the Crown, and they have all sorts of powers. There's something called King's Consent, where they can actually shape legislation before it reaches the statute book. And as a result, they kind of shape legislation to help them. For example, the Duchy of Lancaster and Cornwall don't pay capital gains tax, or corporation tax, or inheritance tax.Actually, I think they may pay corporation tax.But they don't need to declare that.

17:53

produce tax forms or has to be above board. So I think they're just scared. They're deferential. There's still huge powers of patronage by the royal family. You know, if you look at the present Lord Chamberlain as a former conservative minister, The previous one was the former head of MI5.So they just bring people.

18:12

William Hague now works for the Prince and Princess of Wales, so he can't now talk, he said to me, about his time when Andrew was a trade envoy. So it's a very easy way to control and silence people. You'll find that there are royal correspondents or royal writers who have suddenly made deputy lieutenants, who have quangos.Lots and lots of perks if you behave yourself, if you tell your lie.Bye.

18:38

Gosh.So are we at breaking point for the royal family now?

18:41

I think they're at the crossroads.I think this is the me too moment.I've been saying it for months and I think it's getting worse and worse. They adopt this very peculiar position of sitting on the fence with their head in the sand and they just hope the problem's going to go away. And of course it's not. It's building.

18:56

It gets bigger and bigger. They're now being questioned about royal accountability and privilege in a way that they weren't being asked before.Questions are now being asked, for example, about Prince Edward and Bagshot Park. What was the deal there? How is he paying a peppercorn rent and yet he's hiring out stables for huge six -figure sums? Why are Eugenie and Beatrice given subsidised accommodation in St James' and Kensington when they're not working Royals, they have their own homes and actually they spend a lot of the time out of the country.

19:25

Well, Andrew Lowney, a pleasure as always. Thanks for coming in.Pleasure.Well, thank you for watching that very special episode of Daily Expresso.Like, share, subscribe and we'll see you next time.Bye bye.
