Shark Attack At Coogee Beach Leaves Swimmer Fighting For Life | 10 News

A swimmer is tonight fighting for life following a shark attack at Sydney's Coogee Beach.The 35 -year -old was pulled from the water by a brave Ironman competitor who paddled towards the thrashing great white.

Paddling towards the predator.Oh no, oh no.That moments earlier had pounced on a swimmer.

There was quite a few swimmers in the water and one about a hundred metres away from me started screaming shark.As I got a bit closer, There was just the blood all in the water and I went over to her and got her to grab the nose of my board.

25 -year -old Charlie Vercoe leapt into action, paddling the young woman to shore as the shark alarm sounded across Coogee Beach for all swimmers to get out of the water just after 11 o 'clock this morning.

I looked up at the beach and people were screaming at me to get out of the beach and then one man raced in to help pull me out.

It was probably the second, one of the biggest sharks I've ever seen.and it came out of the water.

Lifeguards racing down to the beach to help remove her from the water as bystanders and police rushed to render first aid, performing CPR on the 35 -year -old victim.

The lifeguards were there pretty quick.The ambulance arrived very, very quickly.

There were people on boards.It was so fast.The chopper then came and then there was jet skis.The response was incredible.

She kind of went to the beach.I got a little bit weak and fell off again.I had to grab her by the arm.And she was there, she was breathing, I was just trying to talk to her.She wasn't saying anything.

She has quite massive wounds to her left lower leg and her arms.She's been stabilised by the medical teams and paramedics on scene and she's been given blood products whilst here.

Pretty shaken, pretty shaken out.

rare here at Coogee Beach.The last one was back in 2003 and it was not fatal.But they're becoming more common in Sydney.This is the fourth serious shark incident since September last year.Which has changed from today I think.Locals holding on to hope tonight, this young woman pulls through.

There is a somber feeling here at Coogee Beach tonight as locals come to terms with the horror that unfolded here today.Beaches from Bondi to Maroubra, including Coogee Beach, have been closed and will remain shut for at least the next 24 hours, with ongoing helicopter and drone surveillance monitoring and beach patrols to occur tomorrow along eastern suburbs beaches.As for the 35 -year -old shark attack victim, she remains in a critical condition tonight at St. Vincent's hospital.Georgie?Ataisha Wallace, thank you very much for your coverage.
