Suns tired of Hardwick's talk about what worked at Richmond as defence called out - Footy Classified

Good evening everyone, welcome to Footy Classified.The Saints, the Roos and the Tigers all hot on the agenda tonight.So let's get straight into our star -studded panel.We start with the award -winning, one of the finest journalists in the country, Damien Barrett.Damien, great to have you.Good evening, Sam.

Looking forward to some exclusive news from you.Off the top, the man with all the medals, the Geelong superstar, Jimmy Bartell.Welcome, James.Good evening, Sam.Matthew Lloyd is out, that's the bad news.The good news is that a two -time All -Australian superstar, Ian Nathan Brown, is in.

Brownie, great to have you on Monday as it always is.Good to be here, Sam.Great to have you.As I mentioned, those three clubs in our sites as we start fully classified.But before that demo, some exclusive news on the Essendon coaching search.And there is one name that is now being linked to Essendon.

to two big clubs.

Yeah, that name is Jamie Graham.Sam, you revealed last week on this show that he'd made the shortlist of the Carlton coaching vacancy, and I can reveal tonight that he is also on the very same shortlist to become the next Essendon coach.That shortlist may be down to as few as four names.The first round of interviews and chats were completed last week, and I believe tonight, as early as tonight, some of these candidates, Brownie and Jimmy, are also being told that if they're either successful or not successful to get to phase two, but I'm not sure I do believe that Jamie Graham is one of the four to be moving into the phase two of the Essendon coach search.

So Damo, has he become the smokey at Essendon?Because I think we've all known on this panel that Graham was involved up to his eyeballs in the Carlton job.

But up until now we didn't know that the Essendon one was on the list as well.the current interim.It's almost like a special clause around his potential availability and he may be getting a path through to the second phase regardless of the results.that he's mounting but other names that have been on there Murray Davis that that has been made public but Troy Chaplin is another one I know who did get a first -round interview as well and I also believe tonight that Daniel Pratt who has been another name of personal interest for the Essendon I don't know outside of Jamie Graham who's officially made it through to the next phase.as McVay and Hurd present.You asked the question, is there a world where they could both be involved in a senior leadership of a coach and a senior assistant coach?

Yes there is.And who's assisting Andrew Welsh do all this?He seems like he's a lone ranger out there doing it on his own.Well he's got obviously the CO involved in Tim Roberts as well and also a board member in Ted Richards as well.There are others around.

All I'm seeing is Welshie though.

Yeah, well it's Welshie's decision, I believe anyway, to move on Brad Scott when they did eight weeks ago and it was Welsh's decision to get Dean Solomon off the board onto the assistant coaching ranks which ultimately started this whole process.

So quite a number of weeks ago we learnt that Craig Vozzo, the former CEO, was undertaking a review to see what Great looked like and building out a football department and it's probably further to Brownie's point.Doing that review whilst you're trying to do a coaching search would make it difficult, or at least you'd have to give the potential candidates a line of sight of what your review comes to, because wouldn't they want to know who's in what position, who remains, or what they could potentially be working with?

You've worked in these processes before, I'd imagine you'd want to have that bedded down, but this is the Essendon Footy Club, it has done things differently, and I think there's an awareness of the candidates who have at least put themselves through this phase.of the processes to this point that they are well aware that there is going to be a lot of work to do and a lot to work through if they are successful.

You talked about Herd and McVeigh, Brown.The other name in that, ironically, he's also mates with both of them, is Dan Solomon.And he was talked about early as the guy that potentially Andrew Walsh actually wanted.He's in a difficult position, isn't he?But he couldn't be seriously considered now, given not just the weight of the losses, but... also the way in which they're losing?

Thank you.It was hard to see it working when they put Dean Solomon in where they were as a footy club.

care for that aspect of it, that Essendon component to this situation that has scared off other candidates.Like the other names like Hayden Skipworth and Daniel Gian Siracusa who was at Essendon previously, Sean Grigg, Chris Newman, they've decided I believe not to at all even bother with any phase of the Essendon job.

Damo, so many people in the industry the day after Brad Scott was removed as coach dismissed the James Heard campaign, didn't they?It was, you know, we just couldn'tpossibly go back down that road.I think you wrote a column on AFL .com almost a day later saying this not only could happen, but it's gaining momentum.And that was before his campaign even started.

So as we sit here tonight, are you more of that view?Surely his odds have only shortened from here.He's making the second cut of the interviews.

The curveball for James might be Jamie Graham.It might be as simple as that being the one outside the Essendon family, Essendon connected branch of candidates which has been out there and has been a theme and a narrative the whole way through.The fact that Jamie Graham is now the person of interest and the one person of interest at both clubs.

Who knows how it plays out from here?

Barber and Hawthorne are doing everything right and I was fascinated by this clip from Jack Gunston.

There's times I'm sure you can all see where I'm pretty deep and I'm not running too much so I say to the fitness guys look if you want to give a runner an extra break and an extra rotation then use that and I'll just sort of conserve my tickets and you know stay deeper for an extra 5 -10 minutes and if I'm cooked and I need to come off I'll come off but I'd rather the runners get the rotations and so we can run our games.

No one in the competition's playing football like Jack Gunston so they've broken the mould back to They play traditional football Hawthorne, so they've got the two rucks, they've got good midfielders, they've got two big defenders who do a great job.He plays like an old school full forward and he doesn't come up the field, he doesn't spend the petrol tickets.I love the fresh thinking of Sam Mitchell, it's almost like he's done a 180 and he's got the ball.to what he knew when he played with great full forwards like a Franklin, like a Rough Head and I just think it's working for them at the moment.Does it work come September?I think it does because Jack Gunston's smart enough to make it work.

And that's a player, Brownie, who's had his own injury problems but he's now playing, unfortunately, for Max King and St Kilda.It was a really sad football outcome to what happened to him at Marvel Stadium after 108 weeks of not playing footy to not be able to get through his return match.And then the subsequent and fiery aftermath in the media conference post -match between Mark McGowan and Ross Lyon.

So when you said you haven't spoken to him, what have you actually been told, Ross?Like you said, he's going to get a scan.Exactly what I told you.You are aware of that, though.So did he say - Am I aware of what?That he's having scans.

So you've obviously spoken to someone about it.

He's got a tight hamstring.He'll be having a scan tomorrow, and I'll be updated tomorrow.

As you can understand, there's a heap of interest in this one.

No, yeah, I know, but I'm giving you everything I've got.

Yeah, no, but that's why we're asking, though, because we want to get as much detail as we can.We're just doing our job, Ross.

Yeah, but I've told you four times.Yeah, we're trying to get as much as we can.

What haven't I told you?There's nothing, but that's why we keep asking questions.

Can I just ask how many times have I answered that question?

Yeah, it's fine you've answered it.

We're just trying to ask questions, Ross.I don't understand why you're raising your voice and why I'm getting pushed back on.We're just doing our job, that's it.Yeah, but hang on.Have I pushed back on you doing your job?

No, no, no, but it's more that you are questioning why we keep asking questions.

I'm not prepared to be the bad guy here.

Who took the points today, mate?I think Ross might have in the end.And again, I'm not taking sides in this.Mark had every right to ask what he asked and Ross had every right to defend his patch.But this is the story and this is the cause of the conversation last night.He just hasn't played footy and there must be some major doubt, Jimmy, as to when that next game comes, how it comes and does it come for St Kilda?

Does he need a fresh start as potentially he now wades through what lies ahead?

Yeah, he'd be only hoping to look at the next game.of Charlie Kernow and Danaher and these sort of guys who missed huge chunks of footing and were able to return to really really high levels and be dominant for their teams and maybe that might be exploring a different set of eyes or a different place to just get the freshen up but I'd love to see him back out there for security because you could only imagine a big full forward in that same side would send them up the ladder a lot quicker.

He must be devastated.To see that timeline of what he's been through, such a highly ranked junior, exactly what St Kilda needed, 200cm, athletic, full forward, and just cannot get a run.

and come back and play the best football of their careers and I think that he can do that.He's young enough to do that.He's contracted for long enough and I think St Kilda will invest more in him.

So you used the word frustrated around Max King.The team that they beat on the weekend, the club that they beat, North Melbourne, continue to frustrate a lot of their fans, Damo.And I guess one of the questions is, do we view North Melbourne under their season so far this year or are we viewing them under the totality of the three and a half, four seasons they've had under Clarke?

Well we can view them as both Sam.I think this year's been a failure and I think the four years has been a failure and I say that because if at the end of 2022 when they appointed Alistair Clarkeson the coach of North Melbourne and gave him a five -year deal which takes him next year which he will serve or at least start to serve There is not a world where they would have sat down and said, if at the end of year four you're going to be sitting 13th, or you're going to be 13th after round 20 of that fourth season, you're not even going to make a wild card final in the fourth year.There's no way they would have thought that would have been the outcome.And having failed dismally and abysmally in the previous three seasons, understandably.

It's a great point.

look at it in totality in four years, yes, you go back four years, yes it's a fail.But they're better than what they were last year.So that's got to be some sort of reading.They couldn't have gotten worse.Well, they haven't got worse because they've actually got better.They've won more games and have been in more games and have an opportunity to win that.

But they're better than what they were last year.How kind are you being to North Melbourne?The one big thing about North Melbourne is they've kept every player they wanted to bar Jason Horne -Francis and I think at the end they'll probably be happy to let him go.So a big tick for keeping every player they've wanted to.But they are definitely better.than what they were last year.

And of the eight wins they've had, four of them in total have come from the two teams sitting 17th and 18th.

But that's a bit of a reflection of why they've improved.They previously were the 17th and 18th team.So they're at the bottom of everything now.They're at the top of that bottom third.So it is improvement.I get you take both of you about the last four years.

They're going to finish bottom six again and they'll be in that bottom six bracket of fixturing next year again potentially.

Yeah, potentially.And that's where Alistair Clarkson will be tested for his final year of the contract.And no wonder you know, representatives of North Melbourne say, well let's see it out, and that's the smart business to do.

It always seems to be next year with North Melbourne.We're always saying, don't worry, they'll be better next year, they'll be better next year.They will.And it never really, well you think they'll improve again?

So, Alistair Clarkson, he had a lot to contend with, and he attempted to put a positive spin on the aspect of the North Melbourne part of it, but the whole Nassau -Wangane -Miller, it's not the first time Nass has got a footy club, but he certainly got north yesterday.

He's always going to get his touches because you can't stand on the mark rule that's in play.He's running past and every time he runs past they give him the free kick.So a lot of cases they give him the footy in wrong spots and it actually hurts him.I had O'Sullivan running with him and he was going OK for us and Az was going OK for them but we just weren't sending O'Sullivan to the goal square to take our kick -ins.

So I've been critical of Alistair Clarkson.I'm not necessarily critical of him, Jimmy, as to what to do with that man because it's not the first time that he's destroyed an opponent, Brownie.

This is said Dustin Martin's getting too many kicks.He was his own player.Too many kicks in the back half of the ground.I think he had 38 or 39 one day.The year before he won the Brownlow and they won the premiership.In 2016.

And he changed.He'd become a forward half of the ground player.You never saw Dustin Martin in the back line.I don't want to see Nazair in the back line.I want him forward of centre.I want him having 20 touches and kicking five goals or being that second target out of the goal square.

Just don't waste the time against good sides in defence.

Strong stuff.I like it.You think he's being wasted there.Hey Jimmy, Lorto said last week, I'm paraphrasing here, that North didn't have enough, or any, generational players.And then the irony that they sort of got beaten by one on the weekend.Has that comment aged better, or do North players

still have... someone or multiple people on their list capable of breaking games open like that?

step and aspire to be the NAS of their team.They're not going to be NAS but that version for their team.

Hot start on footy classified.Matthew Lloyd once said don't take a holiday if you're in the media and maybe he should have taken his own advice.Brownie's off to a good start.There's plenty more coming up on footy classified including we're going to talk about that man Josh Fraser.He's softened publicly for the first time on his pursuit for the full -time Carlton job.We'll talk about that next and that man Dimmer and the Suns Matt Rowe they're all under the pump.

At some point in time, I will have to consider where I'm at as a coach.And I think every coach would go through that process this time of year.You sort of start to think about where your gaps are and what you need to keep growing.And I'm no different.So when the time's right, I'll have a deeper think about what that looks like.I've been pretty deliberate around not making this about myself and making it about the club.

And I want to continue that, but with the acknowledgment that at some point, I need to consider where this opportunity's placed me.

A happy man, Josh Fraser, isn't he?And a reflective man, perhaps the first timeon whether he will put his hand up for the main job from next year onwards and he also talked a little bit after the game about training standards which took me back Damo to your chat that you had exclusively with Michael Voss on AFL .comcom .

au take a listen I guarantee you that it is a better place than when I walked in there.It's like comparing silos versus alignment.They're just two different things.No accountability to full accountability.That's just a completely different place.Substandard training standards to elite training standards.

I think we've just become more consistent in our training standards and I think we've probably changed some of the ways we train and the methods we train and just challenged some of the things we see game day are a product of what we're doing during the week.So some of that stuff's around connection.There's a good energy around how we're training at the moment but our challenge is to maintain that.

Am I drawing too long a bow there?No, I think they both could be right.So one could actually build on the other as well.Michael Vos has probably highlighted they've come from a long way back.Josh Fraser has highlighted they've done training and maybe it was elevated training.So they could both be right.

Browning, one thing they are in agreement on though is the progress of Jagger Smith, who Michael Vos today described as a future Carlton captain and someone who is already now with four rounds remaining a lock for the rising star.field lost his spot in the midfield had to earn it back and I heard everything about Jagger Smith being an elite kick and elite user and I didn't see that in thefirst half of the year.But since he's come back into the midfield, that part of his game, I'm now seeing why people were talking about Jagger -Smith being a good kick and he's just added to that midfield and added to that Carlton.With Paddy Cripps and Sam Walsh through there, it's a nice threesome.

Christian Petrarca had the footy world talking before we get everyone on the panel and their take.Let's hear from the coach, Damien Hardwick, and then two of the all -time great captains had their say.

The game requires feedback.You know, how you respond to that feedback is something Leo, as a young player, he'll get better at.It is what it is.Happens a thousand times over the course of the weekend.

I didn't like seeing that.I think that there's a moment to be able to coach.Clearly two players went for the ball.But if you're there to support each other, as a teammate.This is not the type of interaction that you have with one another.This is the reason why these conversations are coming up.

We're questioning about what's the locker room energy like at the moment.

Understand that that's probably Christian's ball, but it didn't fall your way.You've got to get with it.He's a young player.You've got to look after and support him.I don't think that he allowed that to happen.And if anything, this is a growth part for the Gold Coast Suns that they're not getting right at the moment.

And now Christian has come out in an interview with the Herald Sun tonight and said maybe he was a little bit too passionate Jimmy in the spray to Leo Lombard.You played under Joel Selwood, you were part of one of the all -time great teams at Geelong.Now that you've slept on it a couple of nights, where are you with this interaction?

Yeah, look, I agree with Joel and sometimes you do get the delivery wrong.So I don't think we need to be too tough on Christian Petrarca.Look, he's trying to get a point across.He delivered it incorrectly, probably kept going back, but it's all about the follow -up.So if you follow up those conversations, you can normally get it to a good place, but you've got to have aI guess, a thought.

In the heat of the battle, you just want to get the message across, and sometimes you get it wrong.

spray that probably didn't and here's the apology this is moments after so he's putting his hand up to say straight away no I'm sorry I probably got that wrong and then moments later maybe it did work because this is an incident with 55 seconds ago Lombard allows Petrarca to come through obviously feedback is very quick in this world but just a couple of other incidents happen throughout the game It's a good pick up how it unfolded in real time and how it also unfolded tonight via the Christian Petrarca public comments.

There's a lot of problems at the Suns, they've now lost nine matches in a row.2016 -17 at Richmond.

These nine games might be the most important in our club's history.People sit there and go, what are you talking about?Well, I've been in situations before where situations like this have occurred and you get the greatest growth from your darkest times.You often learn most when you're in your darkest times and there's no doubt that happened to me and this football club.

2016 was a bit of a train wreck year for Richmond.The reason your greatest growth comes from your darkest times is because it unlocks humility.

Our messaging was that Whilst this will feel like a dark time, and it is a dark time, it's those times that count.your greatest, your growth and your greatest lessons.

It's great to reflect on where it went well but they're different groups and you've got to actually acknowledge they're different groups even with the talent and potential on the park and currently when I'm watching the Suns they've got an incredible amount of talent in one phase of the play.There's three phases, the football we've all been told, they've got the ball, we've got it, it's in dispute.They have zero interest of when the opposition has got the ball and you compare that to...Zero interest?Zero interest.Their numbers say they've got zero interest.

They don't tackle, they don't chase, they're all over the top proactive and they keep running off.tackling defensive pressure.You can pull out highlights as well.You compare that to the great Richmond side.Three premierships in four years.There was defensive forwards who were celebrated for running around chasing.

They had good backs as well.There was guys playing roles on the wing.There was guys coming into the midfield that allowed the stars to shine.Gold Coast don't have that.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but isn't that exactly what the Gold Coast got Dimmer for?Didn't they get him specifically to be like, hey, whatever you did at Richmond, Come bring it to us.Do it with a new group.So are we that surprised that he's using some of the similar adages?

What Dave is saying is the players are tired of that analogy.

Yeah, but wouldn't it be something that they're expecting?And Sam, what Jimmy's highlighting is something even worse.The fact that they're not defensively minded.

No, but my point being is that Cattleley's got is completely different for Cattle, or to use Damien Hardwick's terms, the different toys.So he's trying to play different sausages, trying to cook them the same way, whatever way we want to put it.But maybe there needs to be an adjustment.Yes, take some of the great things of Richmond, but how then can you actually put them in and make it a Gold Coast Suns thing?

Feels like a long time ago now, but the Dees were disappointing, weren't they?It was a game they really should have won against Geelong, given all of their injuries.Once you take care of Cozzy Pickett, they become a lot easier to beat.

Well, once you take care of Cozzy Pickett, there's nobody else to beat in the midfield.Max Gawne's a wonderful ruckman, but he can't doand he's one of the most taggable footballers in the game right now.I look at Cozzie and I don't think he can play midfield when he gets tagged at this point of his career.I don't think he works hard enough.He doesn't work through it enough.

But you've got so many great options with him.You can put him forward because he made his name as an elite half forward.So if he is getting tagged and he's getting sat on and halfway through the first quarter he's only touched it one or two times, you've got to send him forward.You've got to allow somebody else to come up, do the job, win the footy at the coalface.Because if they get beaten at the clearances, it was 35 all against the Cats, but the game was on the Cats' terms.So if they don't win the clearances, and he's getting tagged.

At the moment he doesn't work hard enough to get through it, but put him forward, allow him to use his assets, forward half of the ground a little bit like Nazair.

His teammate Jack Steel was asked about his game on the weekend.

It's something we speak about quite a lot.He's obviously a weapon that we have and we need to utilise that and we knew that Mullen was going to go to him from a week out.As a team, as teammates, we can be better for him because he also needs to do his part as well, work himself into the game and really be vocal and be a leader about coming for a block and calling some of his teammates out to help him.It's something that he's working through, it's something that we're working through.

It's interesting what you've said there, Brownie, to highlight the Cossie Pickett when he's on song in the midfield and what they need to do with him when he's not.

Look, if he gets free run of the football in the midfield, he's going to do what he's done and have 28 and kick three goals out of the midfield, be dynamic, hit up.But at this point of his career, And everybody's been through it.You played with Gary Ablett Jr., who, when he started to get tagged in the early parts of his career, he couldn't touch it, he couldn't get near it, he had to work through it.And it's something you have to learn to deal with, and something that Desire is learning to deal with at the moment.It's something Nick Dacos is going to have to face, and he's faced it before as well.It's not easy.

And you can'tleave him there in the one spot.You've got to try and work with him.Teammates have got to work with him.And the coach has to move him around.You can't just plonk him in the midfield because you're probably not going to get the best out of him.

All thanks to the great people at Hyundai doing big things in the biggest game.And tonight, we're going to have a look.going big on the Tigers now we have spoken at length several times at this desk Damo, Jimmy and Brownie about the struggles the trials the tribulations of the Richmond footy club with Adam Uzay we know that the road that they've gone down It hasn't worked thus far.Yes, they've had some injuries, but given the draft haul that they had, let's look ahead, Jimmy, instead of looking back.So given everything that we know, what are the actual holes that they still have and what do they need?

Well, hopefully they address their strength and conditioning as well.So we can see some of these players and actually get a clear line of sight on the depth.I think another key defender as well, because, you know, Gipkus is another one who's been injured a lot, who hasn't been on that list as well.Do they have replacement coming down the pipe for Curvis, who's been an incredible warrior for the Richmond Football Club?they might address it with a young Ruck in the draft coming up and you can never be short of good ball users and midfielders but I'd probably start with key position and Ruck first because they've addressed forwards and running types.

And use pick one even potentially Jimmy when it comes to that key back?

if that's what it is you identify as the most needed player?

I should say, with the young players at this stage.And they've got decisions to make even at this late stage of 2026 on Tom Lynch, the great or contextually great full forward for Richmond, and also Dion Presti.I think Tom Lynch will go around again next year.I doubt Dion Presti will.That's just my take on...Another year for Lynch?

I'm not going to be surprised if he's contracted for one more year on a one -year deal for 2020.just as they try to bed down the other key forwards they've got, Armstrong included.

Yeah, the young players, they need senior players around them.They lost Bolton, Graham, Baker, there were so many they lost all in one hit.It does make it hard, makes it hard when they can't get them out in the park as well.But a few games left.I'd look at a museum and go, do we change our game plan and play some exciting, shackle -free football for the last four weeks?So they play very wide.

And sides who play wide, like a Richmond who are down the bottom end of the ladder, they play wide because they don't want to be opened up through the middle of the ground.So that stifles the way they can score, but they do get scored against.I just look at it and go, OK.Shackles off, last four weeks, why don't we play through the middle?Why don't we allow these kids to play the football they've played in their under 18 days?Look, we're probably going to get beaten anyway, but we'll find out a little bit about our game plan leading into next year and next pre -season.

They risk getting beaten more heavily if they do that?Yes, I think so.And could that hurt a group that has already been belted week in, week out?I don't think so.

They know where they are.They're on the bottom of the ladder.They're probably going to get pick one.They go in and they play some exciting football towards the end of the year.Hopefully enjoy it a little bit because they wouldn't be enjoying their football that much at the moment.Well they can't win it if they go in with the same structure they've had all year.

They haven't been able to defend and when you look at the three key forwards that Fremantle have you just go well there's no way they can win this game because they've got marking power.The Giants beat them with fleet of foot in their forward half of the ground.So I think they just try something different this week.Just throw the Magnets around, maybe even Norton it's a time for him to go to centre half back.They build a forward line around Youngcroft and then go really small with West, Waitman, Jones, Davidson, Vandermeer is a test.They can't win it the way they're playing at the moment.

So have a look at what the Giants did to them.He's been so reluctant to ever engage in the possibilities of Norton down -back Browning.And I think it's something he possibly has to do next year and allow Croft some time to develop with Darcy.But just see what Croft's like one game out.They're going to play Finals football.I'm not sure with their current structure if they can do any damage in the Finals, but they might take a big scalp if they do something different.

The game between Port Adelaide and the Brisbane Lions was largely lost if you weren't watching it on the weekend.It was a result that no one was really surprised by.But the incident between Gallup and Giorgiati certainly had the footy world talking and fair to say a mixed reaction from the separate coaches.

I didn't like it.It wasn't a great look but I'm on the other side of it.They're a team that plays tough and probably pushes the limits.

That's his opinion.He's allowed to have it.You don't be one of the better teams in the competition if you don't play a hard physical brand.So I think that's what we do.I don't think we do it unfairly.I think we brought good pressure today.

interesting that Josh has had a chance to watch it.I haven't, so not as busy as what I have.
