The king gave each boy a seed and told them to grow the best plant they could. You see, the king was old and was trying to find an heir to the throne. One boy named Ping loved gardening. He watered his seed, gave it sun, and used the best soil. Keeping close watch, he waited for a sprout. But nothing ever grew.

When it was time to show the king, the other boys had huge, colorful plants. But Ping only had his pot with no plant. He decided to bring it anyway. The king looked at every plant without saying a word, until he reached Ping. Then he smiled and announced him as the winner.
