Right, Romano amongst others are starting to really move on Edison and Manchester United becoming very much a reality. There's supposedly advanced talks with Atalanta, United are waiting on the final green light. The fee being discussed is somewhere in the region of £38 million, which is not a lot of money really. Now, I'm on record as saying that I am not sold on this one and when the links first emerged, that was what I thought. Now it looks like it's on.I'm saying it again because my mind hasn't changed.
There's been no further input to make me change my mind.I want to be fair to Edison because I think that there is a decent player there. This isn't really about him personally. It is a little bit in terms of like his abilities but it's not necessarily just purely about him and I think there is a worry here that I think needs saying. Before this deal gets done and everyone feels obligated to be positive about it happening You know, it's a new transfer why be negative like we've seen this all before so let me tell you what I think it is The case for him his is real and I'll acknowledge that there is a case credit where it's due 38 million pound for a 26 year old nearly 200 appearances for Atlanta I think he's got a title under his belt Champions League experience and a player entering his Prime, but also the final year of his contract Financially the logic is undeniable. This is a bargain transfer the market for midfielders at this level is absolutely brutal You're looking at even Wharton's gonna be double that, you know Elliot Anderson's gonna be more than double that.
Jermaine Evening with the carnage that's going on at Real Madrid is gonna be more than double that.So I think what we have to say is this is an objectively reasonable price at a time and a window where Manchester United are going to have to cut our cough accordingly. And the profile has got merit as well.He is athletic, he is press resistant, he carries the ball through central areas very well.He wins duels, he does work box -to -box, he brings it in.and physicality and that's visible.
And if you look at some of the games that we've performed poorly in this season, very evident in those matches, especially when Casemiro has been rested. Now, in a system that demands midfield intensity, Ederson does tick some of those boxes. No denying it, right?Absolutely no denying that whatsoever. And Romano moving on it, especially with the contacts that he's got over in Italy, and not necessarily framing it the way he always does as one of several options, but actively reporting advanced talks. It tells you that this is real and it's moving quickly.
And it feels like this one actually could get nailed and wrapped up pretty quickly. So I think the deal is credible and I think the player is pretty credible.
Right, then let's talk World Cup 2026.48 teams, 16 cities and three massive countries. It's going to be the biggest World Cup in history. And if you're planning on following England or anyone across the US, Mexico and Canada, the logistics are going to be a madness. You're hopping borders every few days. You might land in Mexico City, fly to New York and then drive on up to Toronto.

Serie A rewards technical control, positional discipline, structured build -up.The Premier League does not.It is physicality, it is mentality, it is tempo and the intensity across those 38 games from August to May, plus Champions League in the middle, plenty of players who have been excellent in Italy arrive in England and are found wanting. The pace, the physicality, the sheer volume of it become overwhelming.Ederson's athleticism could help.his pressing profile could help it could suit the Premier League but there is absolutely zero guarantee he could hit the ground running and I still think even if he did hit the ground running he is the Ugarte replacement in my opinion he is not the Casemiro replacement.
United going at the Champions League for the first time in a while with a manager that is trying to build something genuine and real, cannot afford a six month adaptation period from a new midfield signing. This window is far too important. The standard is far too high. The margin for error is far too small. And we've seen this before.Technically sound players coming in, Serie A proven, sensible fee, and then 12 months of wondering if and when it's going to click.
United's success storycoming from Serie A at the moment is not good. Now I'm not saying necessarily that it's a guarantee that Ederson follows that path, I'm just saying that the risk exists and I think it needs acknowledging.I think one of the things that we did absolutely fantastically last season was recruit from the Premier League and I think that that was something that we should learn from. Those players hit the ground running You can still have your risky ones.SESCO was not Premier League proven.
Senna -Lemmans was not Premier League proven. Both have been fine. But you need some people that understand what the Premier League is about. Now, what does it mean for the rest of the window? The bigger concern is not necessarily Ederson specifically. It's what Ederson means for the rest of the summer.
United need multiple midfield reinforcements.Casemiro gone.Seems like you got is gone.Obviously menu needs a genuine elite partner. Not a solid squad option the midfield Rebuild is not a one signing job. It's two maybe even three 38 million goals in Edison.
I think that's your number two midfielder.I certainly I'd be okay with him being our number two Yeah, this is the Xiao Gomez level signing for me right different player, but that's that level of signing We still need the number one. What does 38 million do to the budget?when we've got signings that require the needle to be moved.Anderson, they're talking 100 million, I don't think it'd actually come down to that.Tremaine is probably north of 70, you know, there was talk of Tenali even being 70.
Every single one of those players represents, I think, a more transformative acquisition than Edison.Even Mateus Fernandes, although I think that West Ham being relegated might ease off the price on him a little bit if it's doable.Every single one of those signings becomes harder to fund if a significant chunk of the budget has already been committed to a player that's profile as a solid option rather than a genuine upgrade and that'sManchester United need coming into this window, it's upgrades.Ederson as your number two, certainly as your number three, absolutely fine.Bring him in behind the headline acquisition.
He adds depth, he adds athleticism, he adds something that might give us something in Europe that we don't currently have.If Ederson is signing number one and there is nothing more ambitious to follow, oh boy, he is not good enough to replace Casemiro. He's not transformative enough to replace Casimiro and take us in a different direction. Now, the good news is there is a lot of talk. Now, there's no one doing any serious reporting about simultaneous movement on Jumaneh, Anderson, Fernandez. And I think, I think we could all settle a little bit if that was the case.
I just hope that Edison is one of a much bigger plan.Edison is not your Casimiro replacement.Luckily, I don't think he's meant to be.I actually don't know if anybody is, really.I just did that thing again.I don't even know why he does that.
Casemiro, at his peak, was a positional specialist. He controlled the space in front of the back four.He dominated aerial battles. He read the game.Ederson is more mobile. He's more aggressive.

Get started freeHe is closer to what we thought we were getting with Ugarte, if anything. He's a different kind of midfielder entirely.Which means whoever plays alongside Koeman in next season needs to solve a couple of problems simultaneously.physical protection that Casimiro provided and the creative progression that this midfield lacks.Edison does solve part of that but he doesn't solve all of that and the play that United are putting all the noise behind and the idea of signing leaves a gap betweenrequires someone else to go and fill.
That's my core worry about this. It's not that Edison is bad.I don't think he's bad.I certainly don't think he's bad. It's more like there is a puzzle here and you can't just stick any old shape in there. You know, especially if there's no guarantee of the other pieces coming in behind him.
Edison genuinely could be a good sign in, taken in isolation at that price, at that profile.can make a reasonable case that that's not bad if it's Ugarte that he's coming in to replace. If he comes in, adapts quickly and Ineos follow it up with genuine ambition in midfield, I'll hold my hands up and I'll say, sweet, we've added some genuine depth there and a little bit of something different. But right now, as this deal seems like it's screaming towards completion, the worry is the same one that has followed the club for a decade.A summer where the squad needed a transformation and it got a tweak. It needed a complete overhaul and we got a fresh lick of paint.
Do you know what I mean?Edison might prove me wrong.I'd be very much happier if he was number two rather than number one.Because we've seen this film before. That's the worry. Please give me your thoughts in the comments below.
Take it easy.See you in the next one.
