This breakup called for an EXTREME apartment makeover

I'm not trying to be dramatic, but I honestly think room makeovers are part of mental health.Yes, if you've been through a breakup, you know how important it is to change up your space in order to not be stuck in the past.

Today, we are making over our friend Claire's living room, and although this has been her space before, during, and after her most recent relationship, it's still time for a fresh makeover.A new place, perhaps, to build new memories with her two adorable little kitties.

And this place just doesn't represent Claire's style at all.These are the inspo pics she sent us.It's mid -century modern, colorful, and funky.

So we've already asked Claire to either move out, sell, or donate things we know we weren't gonna use in this space, so we are already on to the first step, which is to paint.But first, we need to pick a color.

They're all so different.This is Moroccan Sky, can't you tell?

Quite obviously.

Have you never seen the Moroccan Sky before?

I haven't been blessed to make it to Morocco yet.This is Moroccan Sky, but instead of 7 p .m., it's now 7 30.Yeah, exactly.It's a tough call.

They're so different.

This one is called Maple Glaze.We went from Morocco to Canada real quick.The thing is, all of these are gonna be gorgeous and similar, but it's kind of like, which ones work with the other tones we have going on, you know?What couch do you have?What curtains do you have?What tile do you have?

Good tip, good tip.Thank you.We have decided, and it's going to be Cinnamon Crunch, right there.No toast?That one was trademark, they couldn't use that.Cinnamon Crunch, no toast.

Okay, we cut in as much as possible with the sample pot, but we have secured the gallon.And while Becky paints the wall, I want to fill you in on some of the design elements so that you understand the vision.As you can see, we're bringing in some color and interest on this wall, but we're also going to upgrade her couch to a sectional because it's something that she really wanted.Above the couch on this wall, we're going to tackle a cool tinted mirror DIY that we've been wanting to try.And on the opposite wall, Rochelle is actually here.She's doing a mid -century

modern inspired shelving build it's going to be storage and a TV unit and a desk all in one and it's gonna look so much more sleek compared to the furniture that was originally here we always get questions whenever you do this mid -century modern inspired shelving so Rochelle's done an entire video on how to DIY it for yourself make sure you go watch that if you don't want to spoil this shelf build because we will see it by the end of the day and it's gonna look amazing And finally, over here in the kitchen area, we're going to make some small changes so that this kitchen fits with her style.And this island is going to get a complete upcycle so that it's so much more interesting and it's getting its own wood accent wall so that we can further add more division between the kitchen area and the living room area.OK, I think that's it.You're all caught up.It is so nice having somebody else to paint with on set.And this color is looking so warm and it is absolutely what we needed in this space.

We did a whole wall and didn't even have to Unplug the Wi -Fi.That's talent.

Our painted wall looks fantastic.I really love this color.It's so cozy and warm in here already So moving on because there is a bit we didn't paint yet and I'll tell you why this kitchen island We want to keep here, but we want to define the little kitchen zone as separate from the living space.So We think that behind here, a wood accent wall is always a good idea.We love a good wood accent wall, especially when the client says they love mid -century modern.It's just screaming for it.

So we're gonna put one up here.

Should we slide her out?We should.I brought the feets.Take her ice skating, Becky.Okay.She said she thrifted it that, and I was really proud of her for that.

Oh, good.I know we love to hear that We are using a quarter -inch sheet of oak plywood here for this wood wall feature We got it cut to size at the hardware store.So now it's time to see if the math in fact maths And it fits fits but because this is a concrete wall we do have to drill holes and then add anchors this hack is the best for drilling into walls because it catches all the dust and you don't have to come back and do another round of cleanup who wants that yeah not the face once the holes are drilled and the anchors have been added we can then attach the panel to the wall with some screws this is early american and i think it's going to be the perfect like neutral warm tone yeah for this room I feel like the island matches the floor wood.

So this is different than the island top, but you'll see why we're staining it this color in just a second.

It's different enough that it looks intentional.We're not like, oh, those people can't color match, you know?

Yeah.Those people don't know anything.Morning to days.I think it's going to focus a little bit more on this kitchen area and specifically this island, which she thrifted.It's so good, but we can make it like better.

We have peel and stick tile.This is a really nice, like, soft, sagey green that I think will complement the brown tones we have.And with this accent wood wall now, it's going to be so good together.

Before we can jump into the tile, there is some prep work that we have to do first.Also, Rochelle is here to finish the shelf wall and give us a helping hand with this drop cloth.

There are a few places where the tile won't go because they're kind of 3D, like the legs, so we're just gonna paint them in a matching paint color to this, and I think that will be the best solve there.

Yeah, the other thing we also want to do is to kind of hide some of the edges, and that way you won't see some of the storage of the pantry situation she had going on under the island.So I actually went out and got some MDF pieces cut, and I painted them the same way.The matching tile color.I think it's a good spoiler on what the paint color is.No, it's great.It's good, right?

Yeah.The amount of time I was standing in there trying to pick the right green.Greens are so hard.They are.There's so many like different minute shades.Anyways, we're gonna get these nailed up on here and that way we can tile on top of this and like hide things.

It's gonna look good.

I'm adding some adhesive to the island and then securing the MDF with some brad nails.You could just use nails and a hammer if you do not have this fancy equipment.

Then we're giving the legs a quick scuff sand so the paint has a rougher surface to grip onto.This helps to prevent the paint from chipping off in the future.

And then of course we just have to repeat on the other side.Do you guys know what painting the underside of a kitchen island reminds me of?Emma Chamberlain.If you remember.show from the workshop floor we watched AD tours and one of them was Emma Chamberlain and they cut to this shot of like under her kitchen island and it looks so unfinished we were like how did this get by so many people also sayClaire's underside of her island is gonna be finished better than a chamberless.

While Becky finishes painting the island, I'm gonna tackle some small tasks in the kitchen, which is mostly organization, but what is a makeover without addressing organization?I really think people are seriously underutilizing the tops of their fridges.You put stuff there, but then it looks messy, so just throw some baskets, and then put those things, like your popcorn, in the baskets, and it'll look a lot tidier.

Okay, it's tile time.So the thing that's helpful to know is that usually with these peel and stick tiles, there's like a side that's meant to overlap the other side.So you go in one direction and you can usually tell because there's a little bit of writing on the one edge.

Wow, I looked at the thing and you can't see it.It blends in so well.

We also used this specific brand of tiles in Nina's apartment makeover and we can confirm they are still in mint condition after two years.So if you're gonna spend the money on this DIY, get the good tiles.You won't regret it.We will link these ones below for you.

I tried to thrift a light to go up in here, but also I'm trying to avoid fabric in a kitchen.But anyways, I did run into this one at Ikea, and it was kind of honestly what I was looking for, just something simple, but maybe had a little bit of color.Since it didn't have a little bit of color, I decided to bring the color.I had some leftover green spray paint, and it kind of worked out.perfectly.So let's see how she looks.

You may be wondering, did I turn off the breaker?Did I turn off the breaker?Did I turn off the breaker?Cause I don't want to die.And actually I didn't this time.We cannot find the electrical panel in her unit.

And I do think this building is so old that there's actually a panel of panels in the hallway that's locked up.So instead we're going to switch off the light and then do the test meter.Okay, hold on.I can't be under this because of all these bugs.Voltage detector.That's what I said.

The island is looking fantastic.Every time I say island, I can't not think of like a tropical island, but there's a few little things we can do to really pull this whole kitchen area together.One of them being this adorable little shelf.So we chose this wood stain on purpose because we knew we had this shelf and they're almost a perfect match.So I'm going to get this hung up on the wall.

Back at it again with our dustpan wall hack.Dealing with concrete walls is not my personal favorite.I much prefer homes with wooden wall studs.Sorry, neighbors.I need to know how you guys are doing it with houses made entirely out of concrete.Can you ever just hang a piece of art with a small nail or is it a big process every time?

This is my favorite, this little shelf moment here with this tiny little handle.It's adorable.

No pressure on us, but we have to make the other half of the living room look just as good as this side.This is going to be really fun to style too.Oh wait, just wait.

Okay, now for the coffee table debate.Claire already has this super cool vintage bean -shaped coffee table from her parents, which goes really well with the vibes of the space, but we were struggling with the placement.The L -shape of the couch makes it really difficult with a larger coffee table like this, so I also selected a backup option just in case, which I want to surprise Becky with, because she always does that.

And they were very nice.Definitely not offensive, but they weren't adding any personality, I suppose.The funky shape of Claire's coffee table just screams 70s.love that she owned it already and with it facing this way.It fills the area really well Okay, we have a lamp that we want to put in this corner she have us already yeah, it's your plant stand perfect Plants and is now becoming side table And this, she definitely had already.It's so nice.

It's like probably one of the nicest lamps I've seen.

I thrifted and sourced a bunch of vintage and new mirrors.Sometimes art ain't it, you know?

I do always find that weird, picking art for other people, because it's such a personal thing.

Yeah, and we have so much busyness going on with the shelving wall that it was kind of like, what do you do?My go -to is always a mirror.But I literally was trying to find a mirror that would be the right size.And I really wanted oval and it just wasn't happening.So here we are.I couldn't decide on one.

So I bought them all.Literally.Now to take this to the next level, we did pick up some tinted film.I think it's going to soften the space a little bit so that it's not like a direct reflection.It's like a moody reflection that you're seeing.Anyways, we're going to try to put some film on some of these and then get them up on the wall.

That one's nice.

I like that one and it matches this one really nicely.

It's like you turn the reflection into sepia tones.Sepia.

Exactly.

Okay, so there's different types of film.Sometimes they have a backing.Honestly, sometimes they don't and they just use like static cling or something.Some other science to stay on.But I think no matter what, it's really helpful to have some water and soap.And a squeegee is just the best way to get out bubbles.

Otherwise, it's impossible to stick this down and have it be perfect.

I mean, I guess in our case, it matters a little less since we're going to cut it after.Yeah.But if you're trying to get it in a pre -cut spot, precisely, like on a window.Can you spray me?Not me.

We actually mocked this up to scale beforehand.So when thrifting and sourcing mirrors, we knew exactly which ones we needed to get.And this made hanging everything up literally so easy.you may have seen this chair honestly floating around but it deserves a moment because this was a secondhand chair that we got on Marketplace and this whole desk was built around the size of this chair and it's perfect to act as both the desk chair and an accent chair in the living room.So, so excited that we found this piece for Claire.And as we do, we ask Claire for some photos, whether it's family pics, friends, artsy photos that she's taken, because we want this place to feel like it's hers, even though we've come in here and made it unrecognizable.

Don't worry, Claire, this is still your apartment.

One of my secret underrated aisles in the thrift store is the art book section.I always look there.I've had this in my house for a long time because I knew we would use it one day for a makeover.Look how fun these colors are with everything else that we've been doing.I don't personally know who Nick Cave the artist is, but I love his work.
