Toronto’s FIFA Fan Festival rejoices in Canada’s historic World Cup victory against South Africa

For the first time in our country's history, the men's soccer team has won the knockout round game at the FIFA World Cup and will advance to the round of 16.Good evening.How are your nails, everybody?It was a nail -biting game at times as the nation watched, and Canada and South Africa this afternoon.Now, the game was scoreless into injury time when Canada scored late to book their spot in the next round.They will play either Netherlands or Morocco on Saturday.

CB24's Phil Perkins joins us live now from FanFest.You probably can't hear me because of all the noise, where he watched the game with thousands of Canada supporters.Phil, what was it like?

And I tell you, this is the quietest I've ever seen FanFest.It was the complete opposite of this, like, 45 minutes ago.It was a hot, sweaty crowd.mess of people, just a crowd of Canadians, maybe a sprinkle of South African fans to watch this round of 32 match between two countries who've never been there before.And they played like that for majority of the game.But then Jesse March, Team Canada head coach, he made the appropriate substitutions, bringing in Promise David and the guy we've all been waiting for, Alphonso Davies, who has not played for Team Canada in this World Cup as of yet.

Nursing a hamstring, he made a huge impact in this game.His speed, spreading the field out, Jacob Schaffelberg, the Maritime Messi had a big, big part in what eventually would be the winning goal.Steven Eustachio, who plays his club football, MLS with LAFC, with just less than two minutes left to go in regulation.He just fired a shot and found the bottom left corner of the net, and he sent not just the fans at LA Stadium, but here at FanFest.I've also seen footage in Vancouver as well, people going absolutely crazy.ballistic.

Everyone was on pins and needles throughout the match until that moment, because in less than two minutes to go, five minutes of injury time, people just counting down, and it was a party here.Here's what some people had to say after Ustakio made that historic goal to send Canada into the round of 16.

You know what, Canadian soccer has come such a long way.I played growing up, my whole life.A lot of politics involved, I think that's gone now.I think we're focused on winning.It's pretty unreal to see the trademark that they just created in this soccer universe and I'm excited to see what's going forward.

It was tense, it was a tense game, but I'm happy we won Canada! by Canada now on a historic run, the round of 16, and it's going to get exponentially more difficult.They're going to be facing either the Netherlands or Morocco, and they're playing tomorrow in Monterey.Jesse Marsh telling TSN's Matthew Schenetti that he is not resting.He is getting on the Team Canada jet, going to Monterey to scout both of those countries so they can throw everything at this squad.We saw Alphonso Davies get a run in.Promise Davies got a run in.
