Trump CALLED OUT In Stunning Canada Reality Check As Tariff Deadline Closes In

Canada and the United States are apparently getting closer to a trade deal, but not everyone is actually happy about that.Actually, almost no one is actually happy about that because Donald Trump's involved in it, so why would it be good?Anyway, the three -day delay in new 50 % tariffs that Donald Trump announced earlier this week will end tonight if there's no deal. And so I guess there's a chance that it does actually happen, but there seems to be optimism in the air.not just smoke wafting down from Canada, there's optimism too.So in these diplomatic talks, the United States has apparently discussed reducing tariffs on some Canadian steel and aluminum exports to 25 % from 50%.

0:39

So they're not gone, they're just smaller. That would still be about twice the rate that Canada is seeking, so Canada is not necessarily happy with that.Canadian steel exports would also face a quota under which only a certain volume would qualify for the proposed lower tariff. So it's not even as good as it sounds.Domestically, though, the Trump administration is facing a backlash to the proposal from US steel mills, which have argued that the change would undercut their production. So obviously, it's the most classic thing in the world, tariffs are generally bad for consumers.

1:09

But if you're a domestic industry being protected by them, you're probably a fan of it.So that's steel. For the auto sector, a tariff that Trump imposed last year could be lowered to 15 % from the current 25 % with a discount for the value of American parts. But Canada also isn't happy with that change even. One person briefed on the talk said that Canada was pushing back against the proposal. He said it appeared that the US picked 15 % to match the tariff that Mr. Trump imposed on Japanese and Korean autos.

1:38

Because the US side has been unyielding on the rate, the person said that Canada was proposing to effectively lower the tariff by giving credit for Canadian parts as well as the US parts. And I remind you of all of these tariffs for different cars, just to remind you that, hey, you know I like when you go to buy a car, it's way too expensive.Donald Trump is willingly making it worse.I'm just gonna put that out there. So anyway, some in Canada not happy with giving Trump literally anything, others just thinking that he's not giving nearly enough. After all, all he's really proposing doing is dialing back some of the tariffs he's put in effect in the last year and a half.

2:16

It's not like it's really improving our trading partnership. It's just limiting some of the damage that he unilaterally chose to inflict. So some in particular that have an issue with this include the Premier of Manitoba, Wab Kinu.He said that Canada has leverage in the talks, even as his province weighs restoring US alcohol sales. As the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney's at the urging of Mark Carney to help secure a deal that would avert the threatened 50 % US tariffs. So he said this, you can get a sense for what he thinks of Trump.

2:47

Everybody knows the American President by now, he's erratic, he's irresponsible, and he's not to be trusted. And this is the person that we're supposed to make a deal with, and we're gonna make additional concessions for it.That's why I say you can't make a good deal with a bad person, because who's to say it's not going to be undone? Now, despite that, it seems as if he's going to play nice with Mark Carney and the other premiers to go along with this, but he's not wrong.Donald Trump will have this deal, but he already has his trade deal with Canada that he negotiated, and he isn't abiding by, he's not honoring that.He already did tariffs last year, and then he did new ones this year.

3:24

So if they make some sort of deal, then that only tells him that the pressure actually works, and he won't honor that.I think they're totally right. And I do like, by the way, I think it's funny that the Premier is saying, okay, we'll go along with this. But he's also still urging Canadians to boycott American goods, cuz they do still have that ability.Brett, what do you think?

3:41

It's just to me, we don't need to go like this at Canada.Yeah, that's what's so weird about it.He negotiated a deal with Canada. We had a NAFTA agreement with Canada. No one talked like this. And in many ways, Trump is negotiating with himself, but he's butthurt about the agreement that he made when they, relative to this, were just talking.

4:09

And that's what's so weird. And that, I think, speaks to the larger themes around America's perception in the world under a Trump presidency.Yes, there are adversaries out there.against whom you can rattle sabers. But the most extreme version of this is what he's done in Iran.Basically, the perception of America as, for better or for worse, the person who won World War II, it's not necessarily the accurate thing, but we won World War II.

4:40

We became a superpower along with Russia who also won World War II, arguably more won World War II.And then we, through a battle of attrition, outlasted the Soviet Union. They crumbled, we're the lone superpower and our job is to make things cool economically the world over. That's what our job was, right? And for our allies to be cool people and nice people and be friendly with our allies and advocate for them.Flash forward to now, We're threatening to bomb somebody who is an Arab ally because they won't help us with this ridiculous war another ally got us into.

5:19

And we're in a ridiculous trade war with Canada. It sounds like an unhinged Mad Lib.That said, also when you go into the tariff conversation, dude, just read any economics one book, it's not gonna be easy. It's gonna be bumpy. And you're gonna talk holistically about entire economies when really what it is, is some industries win and some industries lose.Everything gets more expensive, and it's more expensive for the consumer.

5:51

Yeah. And weirdly, total coincidence, everything's more expensive these days.I wonder how it got that way. Also, you reminded me of this.Is it not wild that Donald Trump earlier this week, the United States President, just threatened to bomb the hell out of an ally because he's mad at them. And we're just moving on.

6:12

That's literally not even on the news today.

6:14

But I think just reputationally, Canada would understand if you had certain protectionist tariffs for traditional American industries. They would understand that. But to be as hostile to Canadians by being impolite, which Donald Trump is the nuclear Mecca Godzilla anti -politeness person. It just doesn't make any sense. And you're starting fights that are having backlashes for the people's pocketbooks and making the people of Canada less likely to go along with stuff, which is kind of what you need allies to do.You need to get along with your allies.

6:56

It's just so strange. It's just so strange and it's so destructive.
