Trump speaks with world leaders at G7 summit in France

While President Trump's long -awaited deal with Iran is a major headline today, he's also meeting with other world leaders, including Prime Minister Mark Carney at the G7 Summit in France.Economic security, artificial intelligence, trade and critical minerals are dominating those discussions, with Carney pitching Canada as the key partner on many of those issues.Tessa Bennett joins us live in studio with the latest on the G7 Summit.Good evening, Tessa.

and Iran, French President Emmanuel Macron has put economic competitiveness, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and the war in Ukraine at the center of this year's agenda.

Despite any friction caused by his aggressive foreign policies, US President Donald Trump has a pivotal role in the G7 summit.

We've always had a G7, which was basically an American club.They invented it at the very beginning back in 1975.They've always been the most powerful member.And especially when the big problems in the world require a military force to deal with, well, America is by far number one.

A key question is whether the group can produce a coordinated response to China's dominance in critical mineral supply chains.and industrial production, an issue that affects everything from electric vehicles to advanced technology manufacturing.The trading bloc aims to help the West wean itself off China, though some reports suggest there's already some skepticism among G7 members and industry leaders about how far the group can go in adopting a common strategy.For Canada, however, the summit is an opportunity to highlight its role as a reliable supplier of critical minerals and a partner in emerging technologies.

What Mr. Carney said was he wanted clean energy because Canada is not only an energy superpower, it's a clean energy superpower.There's an enormous amount of unity amongst the G7 leaders.They all agree that China shall not have a stranglehold on on the critical minerals the rest of us need.

Beyond the agenda items, the relationship between Trump and his G7 counterparts is expected to get lots of attention over the next two days of the gathering.In the past, the US president has been a wild card at these events, something exemplified last year.He quit the gathering in Kananaskis, Alberta early and seemingly insulted this year's host, President Macron, by describing him as publicity seeking.But it seems Macron is making every effort to keep Trump in France for the full three days, including organizing a dinner at the Palace of Versailles Wednesday night.And experts say Trump may have added incentive for being cooperative this year.
