Worries over inflation.Yesterday, the GDP was slower than expected.Last time we spoke, you told me you were expecting 4 % growth in the second half of the year.We got a growth number yesterday, but it was way lower than people expected.

Ohio residents are heading to the state fair as new Fox polling shows that voters may be souring just a bit on the economy.Jeff Flock is in Columbus talking to fairgoers.Hi, Jeff.

0:24

Hi, Jackie.Wish you were here.Beautiful day.Yeah.Well, you could be sitting right next to me.Nobody else wanted to ride with me, apparently.

0:33

Yeah, it's hard to be in a bad mood when you're at the fair eating fried items and riding the SkyRide here, above it all.But indeed, the Fox News polls shows about three quarters of Americans now feel negatively about the economy.

0:49

The president has a serious economic problem to the point that he just doesn't want it aired, which you expect when he's waging attacks on the fake news media. But when it's Fox News that are the ones airing it, you know he's in deep trouble.

1:05

I think the carousel's about to begin, and as I say that, perhaps you'll listen to some of the folks that we talk to who say, I'm kind of going around in circles.Take a listen.

1:15

Trying to buy a house and make a living for myself is rough.I live paycheck to paycheck.

1:22

Everything costs too much. But if you can pay it, go ahead. But the people who are struggling, who can't really pay it, I feel bad for them.

1:32

Fox News' own political analysts are telling their viewers that Americans are in economic pain and increasingly blame Donald Trump. The Murdoch -ran network that, let's not get it twisted, still very much coddles the president and caters to his needs, has on several occasions as of recent felt forced to admit the truth, imagine that, for a news network, or a news network, both via their own polls and on their airwaves as well.deal with the repercussions of Trump's policies.

2:03

Kevin, President Trump, as you well know, talks about the economy frequently, bragging about it.He calls it the hottest country in the world. And here's something Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said back in December.

2:15

Look for the second quarter of 2026 to be amazing, as all this money comes back into the economy from this big, beautiful bill, which really takes care of Americans. Finally, the president has the power to take care of Americans.Someone actually in the White House cares about the real people.

2:35

You said just a moment ago, Kevin, that consumers are optimistic, but we have this poll where 77 percent of Americans say economic conditions are overall poor. That is the lowest of Trump's second term so far.Is this the, quote, amazing economy the administration thought you'd all be boasting about when the, quote, unquote, big, beautiful bill was passed more than a year ago?

2:56

Well, again, right now, the economy does look amazing to me.The inflation is going down. The unemployment rate is low.Initial claims like no one's getting almost no one's getting fired. And final demand was up about 4 percent, which is about what my friend Howard Luddick was predicting back then.It was the sort of surge in imports of capital goods that I think they caught people a little bit by surprise.

3:17

That's why the number was a little bit lower. But I think that you're seeing really, really strong growth. And in the end, one of the things that I can say as an economist is that there's a big economic literature that says that in the end, people vote based on what's in their pockets. There's a guy named Ray Fair at Yale that has a famous paper that shows that what people have in their pockets is the best indicator of what's going to happen to elections. And so if you take the Ray Fair model, then you could say, well, actually, real incomes went down under President Obama, then President Trump won, and real incomes went down under President Biden, President Trump won again. And so I think that the real incomes growing right now are a really positive sign politically, and much more positive sign than something I would see.

3:54

And if you look at polling, the board from ABC to CNN, they're finding a consistent through line.Only 23 percent of Americans rate the economy positively on CNN's poll.Pew Research found that roughly three quarters of those surveyed rated the economy negatively. And Fox News also found approximately three quarters of registered voters describing the economy negatively, including 41 % who called it poor.So it's not just one rogue survey, right?

4:24

It's not a liberal pollster with Trump derangement syndrome or a group of people outside Whole Foods asking whether capitalism failed. It's different organizations using different methodologies and they're finding the same basic thing here.Americans do not think this economy is working for them.

4:51

yesterday, but it was way lower than people expected. How would you assess the macro story today?

4:56

Right.Well, I think that what we were looking at when you and I talked last was the really surging domestic demand. And so final sales within the U .S.were about 4 percent, actually, almost exactly the number we talked about, 3 .9 percent. And the reason why the top line number was 1 .5 was that we imported so many capital goods because we're building factories so fast that the number was different than we expected by a little bit.

And the bottom line, though, is that if you look at that, so the huge surge in capital spending, which means there's downward pressure on inflation because there's upward pressure on supply.Plus, CPI and PCE, those two reports were about as good as you could ever hope to see if you were a Federal Reserve governor. Then it means that the economy is really running on all cylinders.

5:44

The president bet that tariffs would bring American factory jobs back. There's a new report out that says it didn't work.It was out June 15th, Freedom Foundation.and it has the U .S.manufacturing jobs over the last 10 years.

5:57

What do you say to that, if that's the real purpose of implementing a lot of these tariffs?

6:02

Well, I do think you have to look at historic numbers. So during the Biden administration, after the COVID lockdown ended, we had a rebound in manufacturing jobs as the economy opened back up.But then we lost 220 ,000 manufacturing jobs in the last two years of President Biden.Last year in 2025, President Trump stabilized this. And now in the first half of 2026, we've seen the manufacturing jobs go positive. So it dropped severely.

6:27

We stabilized it.Now it's coming back up.

6:29

And what is terrible for Trump is that this is supposed to be the issue that he's strongest on, right?Trump did not return to office promising Americans subtle improvements in macroeconomic efficiency. He promised prosperity. He said prices would fall.day one.

6:46

So when I win, I will immediately bring prices down starting on day one.I walk into office.I have a press conference first or second day and they're screaming at me.What are you going to do about high prices?Right? What are you going to do?

6:59

I said, I just got here. What are we talking about?A vote for Trump means your groceries will be cheaper. They tell me they don't feel it because they're going to now.

7:08

I've only been here for 11 months.

7:10

Under my leadership, the United States will commit to the ambitious goal of slashing energy and electricity prices by half at least. We intend to slash prices by half within 12 months at a maximum 18 months. And if If it doesn't work out, you'll say, oh well, I voted for him.I still got him down a lot.Energy prices, airfares, mortgage rates, rent, and car payments are all coming down, and they're coming down fast.We inherited a mess, but we've done a hell of a job in 12 months.

7:44

Energy is the future.bring us back. That means we're going down and getting gasoline below $2 a gallon.

7:52

They're gonna drop like a rock as soon as it's over.Painfully high, though, now, and could be creeping higher before it's done.Well, lower than Biden, excuse me, lower than Biden.

8:00

Starting on day one, we will end inflation and make America affordable again.Don't forget, I inherited these.I haven't been here very long.I inherited the worst inflation in history from what caused to going down rapidly.

8:14

He said energy would become cheap.instantly.He said tariffs would make Americans rich.He said his business instincts would produce an economic boom almost immediately. And now you have Fox News running headlines like voters say they're in economic pain.

8:29

And even though we've made incredible progress we understand that there's a lot more work to do and the thing that I'd ask for the American people is a little bit of patience.

that this year could finally be different. One big takeaway from this poll is that at this point in the race, the brutal GOP primary with John Cornyn is having a lingering impact on how voters feel about Ken Paxton, particularly Republican voters. While 98 % of Democrats support James Tallarico along with 68 % of Independents, only 89 % of Republicans are behind Paxton. And when you break down those GOP voters, nearly a quarter of non -MAGA Republicans said they support Tallarico. Why is that?Well, one reason is that more voters are concerned Paxton lacks the character to serve than they are that Tallarico is too extreme.

9:27

36 % of Republicans and 59 % of voters overall said they are extremely or very concerned that Paxton lacks character, while only 17 % of Democrats and 47 % of voters overall saidthey're at least very concerned Tallarico is too extreme. There are still three months to go until the election.

I mean, Trump can dismiss CNN, he can insult ABC, he can call the New York Times failing all he wants, but Fox News is a network where he expects the economic miracle to receive nightly confirmation, which you best believe, he tunes into, hence the play -by -play every other week on who Fox should or shouldn't have on the air.And when you go deeper into the analysis, you find that Fox reported that Trump's net economic approval fell by 13 points between March of 2025 and June of this year. Its analysis said that a majority disapprove of his economic performance and that the dissatisfaction extends beyond individual issues such as tariffs or gas prices.Fox's own words were, quote, most Americans feel like the system is stacked against them.Another very troubling area for the president who built his entire political identity somehow around supposedly defeating a rigged system.I know this is coming from the man bragging that his economy is booming that much that his friends can finally afford that private jet that they wanted.

10:53

A man of the people, right?

10:56

But we passed the largest tax cuts in American history. We delivered 100 percent expensing. That's a big one. That's I think we had the greatest economy in the history of our country in my first term.We then got hit with COVID.But even including COVID, we did a great job in COVID.

11:11

We never got credit for it.But every country was ripped apart by that disaster.uh we know where it came from it came from wuhan and i said that but we were all ripped apart and china got hit very very hard it was delayed they got hit very hard at the end but uh it was a terrible thing but we had the greatest economy in history and before covidnobody had ever seen anything like it.But if you just took those three years and look at what we're doing now, we're going to blow them away.I mean, unless some horrible event happens, which is always possible, you know, is it always have to at least think about the horrible events who would have thought that COVID could have happened, a thing like that could have happened.

11:53

But We delivered 100 % expensing and that expensing I think we write it off in one year.I have friends that bought things that frankly they didn't need.I have a friend that never flew on a private plane in his life and he ended up going out buying a very expensive private plane because of expensing one year.

12:10

But Fox have found that 65 % of voters say that the country is rigged in favor of the wealthy, up from 54 % back in 2019.Fox's separate analysis cited even more striking findings that 72 % of middle class adults and 86 % of working class adults believe that the current political and economic system works against them. Both figures have increased by more than 30 points over the past decade, so there's clearly a shift in the air, even on Fox News airwaves.Which is bad news for the man who campaigned as the working class billionaire, which is Already an unusual job description, right?Kind of like advertising yourself as the people's hereditary monarch. But the argument worked because voters believed that his wealth meant that he knew business and would deliver for them.

12:58

But instead, even those often cocooned off from reality watching Fox every single night of the week, only 20 % believe that Trump's economic policies help everyone. So no wonder he's panicking and doing everything possible to distract from this very information. He knows that the economic crisis and the foreign policy crisis are no longer separate, right? The war that is ever evolving each day has entered the family budget.Every missile that he launches now has a price to pay.And the pump, every threat to shipping

13:38

Trump told Americans that, well despite promising that he'd not get America into any more foreign wars, that this war was necessary and military escalation would demonstrate strength and wouldn't impact our lives. But it couldn't be further from the truth.Voters are looking at rising prices during an Iran war that Trump said would be over quick and concluding that the president has no plan and worse, takes no accountability.
