Trump’s Canada Attack BACKFIRES In Stunning New Twist
Mexico and Canada need us.We don't need them. The deal is important for them. It's not important for us.
We're trying to work through this trade thing. They've got their own domestic political concerns that we're gonna run through or whatever. But I see, since I'm not working for Trump, the billions of dollars that we're losing.Because Canadians don't wanna buy our products. They don't wanna visit here.I think that's a bad thing.
I don't like seeing this fissure between us.That's why a few weeks back I wrote about it on my sub stack.I don't hate Canada, no matter how much Donald Trump wants me to.But across the border, Canadian politicians are involved in their own internal arguments about what exactly to do about Donald Trump. So Mark Carney has been tough, we've profiled that on the show multiple times. But he has also left some room for tensions to cool and maybe to work through some of these diplomatic and trade issues.
His top political rival, Pierre Poilievre, I believe it's pronounced, I'm not great with the pronunciation, but I think Poliev's not bad.He is goading Carney to go harder against Donald Trump and the US.So in a letter to Carney that was shared with reporters, Poliev and his Canadian US relations critic, Shivaloy Majumah Majumdar said Ottawa has given in to several of Trump's demands in the last year. The pair cited scrapping the digital service tax, removing Canada's counter tariffs, and cutting the United States into a deal to share net toll revenue from the recently opened Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan. We've profiled both of those segments of this.Poitlieu is arguing that Canadian job losses prove that Carney's no deal is better than a bad deal claim is failing and wants Carney to try this instead.
So the Conservatives, reiterating their claim.to strengthen Canada's negotiating position with the creation of a strategic reserve of critical minerals, which would be open to countries that provide tariff -free access to their own markets. So trying to generate a little bit of leverage in terms of access to resources that we might need. This debate comes as a new round of 50 % US tariffs US tariffs on a range of Canadian goods is set to take effect on August 19.Those were announced about a month ago, we profiled that at the time. And so, Carney's been trying to make a deal offering a few things like ending bans on American alcohol sales in exchange for the tariff relief.
The Canadian side is considering lifting retaliatory tariffs on US cars and making some changes on dairy. But in return, they want those new 50 % tariffs to be taken off, which I think seems pretty reasonable.I don't know which of these strategies is best at this point, JR. I do think that no matter what you give in to Trump, and even if you're able to get past these 50 % tariffs and maybe cool things down, Donald Trump isn't picking these fights for rational, reasonable, predictable reasons. He's doing it, I think, because he needs an enemy. He's doing it because he's thin -skinned.I don't think that either of these men are gonna be able to just get rid of the fight altogether.
