Trump's Canada Plan BLOWS UP In Financial Disaster As Threats Backfire Spectacularly

A damning new report is showing that Donald Trump's problem vis -a -vis Canada is getting even worse. It might in fact be twice as big as we thought it was.And there I'm basically talking about him starting this rhetorical and maybe at some point physical war with Canada has resulted in less trade between our countries, but particularly less tourism between our countries. He keeps threatening to make it the 51st state. He keeps jacking up the tariffs against them. And that's led to almost one in two Canadians who previously might have traveled to the United States choosing not to do so.

And it is a lot more than we thought it was previously. So here's the new information that's being gathered by University of Toronto researchers.A new research tool that tracks cell phone activity has found a 42 % drop in visitors from Canada to big metropolitan areas in the US, much higher than the official border crossing data had suggested. So we knew previously, Canadian government figures, they backed up the broader picture with return trips.Home by Canadians from the US down 25 % last year.American visits to Canada fell by 7 .5%.

1:05

So that might partially be some MAGA people having an issue with Canada. It might just also be that economic times are really hard, so it's tough for Americans to take trips. But clearly, it's not an equal thing. They're coming here less than we're not going there. But now we have the 42 % figure, and here is why that's higher. As potential explanations of why that figure is so much higher than the border crossing estimates, researchers noted that cell phone data also captured freight traffic, which border crossings do not.

And can also track changes in Canadians previously living in the US who have since left. And with the big war of words that's been going on for a year, you can understand why some people from Canada might choose not to live here anymore. And apparently a lot of different areas are seeing these declines. It's not just the obvious tourist traps. You also have places like New York, New Hampshire, Vermont. So these are bordering states that had previously had pretty close relationships with Canada.

Of course, Las Vegas, we've heard a lot about that.Walt Disney World as well. And we can expect, we talk about the World Cup and how there's reasons with the whole ice thing where we might expect maybe travelers from Mexico to be less likely to come here. We're also probably expecting visitors from Canada to be less likely to come here.So it is a big mess. And this is having a negative economic toll on America.

2:23

Less tourism is damaging some of these places, particularly Las Vegas. But there's also less trade And so a lot of companies that either sell to Canadians or use some components products made in Canada are having a lot harder time now.So it's just a big mess. It's like so many things he has that are just total own goals. We don't have to have this negative relationship with Canada, but Donald Trump seems to delight in it for some reason. What do you think?

2:48

Yeah, that's what's so frustrating about all of this is this was completely unnecessary. He didn't have to antagonize Canada the way that he did.And of course, his tariffs are a big part of all of this. And I know a lot of Canadians, I have a lot of family up there. And yes, they're less willing to come down here for wedding, things like that.I'm glad they came for my wedding, all that happened before all the tariffs, etc.

In upstate New York, especially, I have a friend who runs a bed and breakfast up there. And she did report to me directly that, yeah, they have seen a lot less Canadian visitors. They were able to make it up with other people. But the northeast of the United States, they were kind of bracing, especially in the fall of last year, for their profits to go down.Because they do rely a lot on tourism from Canada.to those smaller states, to those small towns up there to get through their business.

3:42

And a lot of it is small businesses that are suffering, right? What we're also seeing or something we have to look forward to is FIFA.That's being hosted across, I believe, 11 American cities, including here in Houston. And what's happening is the rooms that were being reserved, tens of thousands of rooms across the country are not being booked. And they're having to let them go.FIFA had to cancel all these room reservations.

4:06

These places are losing money. But even when you do host these big events that are supposed to bring in tourists from other countries, for example, the NFL draft in Pittsburgh, the local businesses are not profiting off of all the influx of people the way that perhaps they used to.Because these people will just go to the venue, they'll go to their corporate hotels and stay there, they'll eat at the Cheesecake Factory. And all of the local businesses that were hoping to get some foot traffic in there, they're just not seeing the benefits of it.So then it's like, what is the point of hosting these big events, if the city is going to just lose money off of it.You're just gonna have all these people in the city who are gonna trash the city.

4:46

Presumably, not that these are trashy people, but that's just the nature of what happens. And the locals, the local economy does not come out better for it at the end of it.This is all the result of Trump and his policies and the relationships that he has disintegrated with a lot of our allies. And we can look forward to FIFA, we can look at things like the NFL draft, we can look at the recent tourist season in the fall. And we can look forward to the summer and see what that's going to look like. But people are saying, from Europe especially and from Canada, they're saying specifically, I don't want to go to the United States because they're antagonistic to immigrants, they're antagonistic to tourists.

5:27

like that.to come and deal with any of that.Because even I don't wanna really travel a whole lot right now.I'm going to, I have to, but I'm not looking forward to it.

5:54

Yeah, I've traveled less than this last year than I have probably in the previous decade. So it is pretty rough and I understand it.People are being pinched in a lot of different ways.
