UK Elections: What do the results show so far?

Good Morning Britain20 views

the local election results that have come in so far.It does appear to be a very changing landscape is emerging.A night of huge success for Reform UK so far.The party swept up council seats across England, taking every seat possible in the places it was defending or fighting for the first time in most cases in councils. Now, party leader Nigel Farage has called it a historic change in British politics.

0:29

most of those seats have been so far I must say of course lots of counts are still going on but so far most of those seats that reform have taken have been from Labour which of course then heaps more pressure on the Prime Minister it was always expected but it looks to be as bad as perhaps the worst of the predictions had been. One of his own MPs in one of those embattled council areas where they've lost control has already blamed the results tonight and this morning on mistakes made by those at the top very poignant in that criticism. Now, counting, as I say, is still underway. And of course, Scotland and Wales results are still to come because they won't stop counting until nine o 'clock this morning.

1:08

Until nine o 'clock, yeah.So we've got that for the rest of the day to plough through. We do.

1:12

We've got correspondents all across the nations and regions in key battlegrounds. We've got Salford, the West Midlands, East London, Holyrood and Cardiff. And of course, Downing Street, where political correspondent Louisa James is there.Good morning, Louisa.to you, Louisa. You have been up all night casting a sort of bird's -eye view, essentially, of what you analysed this morning is going to be the big questions of the day for the government of the day.

1:46

What do you make of it so far?

1:49

We have been saying for months that this is going to be judgement day for the Prime Minister. From the early results, and it is still early days, lots more still to come,it does look as though the judgment of voters on Keir Starmer is even harsher than some of the very bad predictions that we have been seeing.Have a look at this graph, which shows the wins and losses so far, and it shows very starkly the dramatically different fortunes that the parties are facing. So you can see big losses for Labour, both seats and council. So far they have actually lost more than half of the seats that they were defending and significantly that includes in areas like the North and Midlands, which should be their heartlands, and then huge wins, huge gains for reform, albeit from a baseline of basically zero.

2:37

But if that is the judgment, the verdict from voters, it is up to MPs and ministers to decide what the sentence is going to be for the Prime Minister. We have already had his deputy this morning, David Lammy, saying, quote, you don't change the pilot during the flight.Behind the scenes, though, a lot of A lot of MPs are very much not convinced about that. The trouble is that collectively they don't seem to be able to make up their mind. Here are two MPs speaking overnight who perfectly sum that up.

3:09

Everybody at the top.I think we need to see a real change in direction here.We made some serious mistakes early on.It will be repeated at general election and that's why there has to be a moment of reckoning now.

3:21

The Prime Minister has my support.I think we've got to have some really difficult conversations when we're back because, as I said, I'm not convinced that we have lost voters to reform.I think we have had slippage to the more progressive parties.

3:38

Well, Reform UK are very convinced that they are the winners here.I spent some time at their headquarters overnight, where they were sipping cocktails called Nigel Negroni's, described as unmistakably strong. And from his team overnight, absolutely no question that he is the right man.for the job.

3:56

It appears Reform UK, under the leadership of Nigel Farage, has penetrated the Red Wall Labour seats. What is very clear to me is that voters have seen the incredible work of Reform UK councillors in reform -controlled councils and they have voted to have a reform council themselves.

4:17

results, as I said, still to come, particularly in Scotland and Wales, which could be dramatic.Other things to look out for, how much the Conservatives are damaged by reform, whether the Greens popularity has been damaged, whether the Lib Dems can grab any of the spotlight, but the reason these elections are so significant is because they might answer, or at least start to answer, some even bigger questions about the future of our union, the future of our political landscape, and even who might be next inside Number 10, whether that's at the election or before.

4:50

Yeah, Louisa.Thank you very much indeed.Well, our senior correspondent, Jonathan Swade, is in Romford in East London. So, Jonathan, it's not just the Labour Party, of course, who are losing seats to reform, is it?Although the figures so far do look like there's a big chunk taken from there.

5:12

Firstly, thanks to Havering on the London -Essex border for providing a bit of glitz and glamour to the local election so far. This is a venue that traditionally is used for weddings and parties, but it is Reform who are on course to be celebrating here this morning, locally, as they are nationally, as Louisa was talking about there.Interestingly, they are not just taking votes from the Labour Party. This is a traditionally suburban, conservative area.It has been for many years.controlled by Independents, the Havering Residents Association.

5:46

So far, reform has taken a number of those wards. They have been telling me they are on course for overall control here.I have just been talking to the first couple to be elected for reform, the first declaration, a man and wife. They run a pub in Romford, just down the road from here. They decided to stand for reform after hearing the concerns, worries and moans from their customers.

6:14

For the local ones, the road doesn't get swept.Graffiti on the walls.Just rubbish everywhere.Parking is a problem. All like minor ones, but if we sort them out and tied up the town, it will make a difference. The people will feel happier.

6:27

All the empty shops.

6:32

So interesting there to hear from local people about their local concerns. So it may not just be an anti -Labour vote, an anti -Democrat vote.vote.I should say that Liberal Democrats elsewhere in London appear to be holding up their share of the vote because they have held on and still have overall control of Richmond -upon -Thames, Leafy Park, South West London, Twickenham Stadium and also where Tad Lasso is filmed in the centre of Richmond.Interestingly, the Greens have lost all of their seats in Richmond -upon -Thames.I should say, if you take a look over my shoulder, they are still counting in that room.

7:07

They still have many of the to go but reform are on course to control the council here in Havering and so much so we're expecting celebrations with Nigel Farage, the leader is expected to turn up here in the next couple of hours and of course you'll hear him live on Good Morning Britain.

7:23

Certainly will.Jonathan, thank you so much.Right, let's head up north to Manchester.Amelia, how is the so -called Red Wall standing up?

7:35

Well, Ranvir, so far it's really not, to be honest with you.Tonight we've seen huge labour losses in places that stood strong even during Boris Johnson's Conservatives.of the Red Wall back in 2019.But this year, as we have been hearing, it is reform that are largely taking the seats.Places like Tameside, which has been a Labour council for 47 years, now has no overall control, with reform gaining 18 seats. We have also seen huge losses in Wigan and Salford to reform.

8:07

In Stockport, a slightly different picture, It is the Lib Dems that have taken control there.Again, losses for Labour.Over in Hartlepool, all 12 seats were taken by reform. The Labour MP has called for Starmer to resign.Any resignation would trigger a leadership contest. There is already speculation that Andy Burnham, the mayor here, would be the main man to challenge that.

8:35

He was supposed to have a keynote speech here today which he's withdrawn from. And that, of course, is only increasing that speculation. But all in all, from speaking to Labour councillors across the night, a huge sense of despair up here. And, of course, many more votes to continue to come in throughout the day.

8:58

Amelia, thank you so much.

9:01

Now let's go to Ashtaghari Nagnaj. You've been across the voting at Dudley and at Birmingham, haven't you?Another crucial area. How is it looking at the moment?

9:13

Well, it was widely predicted in large parts of the Midlands, including here in Dudley, that perhaps some of those insurgent parties, like the independents like the Greens, might make their voices known. But what we are seeing, clearly, is those traditional two -party, those established heritage parties, Conservative and Labour, being no more across the UK.And the same can be said here in Dudley, where instead, the insurgent party that's been pushing through and has won, largely, manythose seats back from the Conservative government here, Conservative party here in Dudley's council has been reformed and not only are they winning Kate and Ranvir, they're winning by quite significant huge margins and another interesting point I found is that voter turnout has been absolutely huge in certain wards and certain councillors when they were calling out some of those numbers they are sizable and one former Tory MP and now a reform councillor, elected today, says this is the end of a two -party tradition.Have a listen.

10:13

The people are speaking, aren't they?I mean, this is an earthquake moment for the country. This is a final goodbye to the two -party system that we've seen for many a decade, and the people have had enough. They are basically saying, we are very, very unhappy, and they are sending a message back to Westminster that, you know, that they want to see change.

10:37

Across the Midlands, Labour have lost a number of the councils to no overall control.Take a look at this.Tamworth, one area where there was great Labour dissatisfaction.Redditch, reform there, winning every seat bar one.But what we are likely to see, it is important to say, is this kind of no overall control method now means that we are seeing this splintering.of multiple party constellations, if you like, it will mean that people will have to make deals with each other.

11:03

And if you've got different challenges, different beliefs, how is that going to work? That's the crucial question.

11:08

Yes, it could have a real impact, couldn't it, for the people that are actually living under those councils?Yeah, it's really interesting.Fascinating.

11:16

Thank you so much, Ashley. Now, Labour is predicting to lose its dominance in Wales, with Plaid Cymru expected to be the biggest party in the Senedd for the first time in history.Rhys Williams, our correspondent, is there and has the latest from Cardiff.

11:33

Today's result looks likely to be historic for many different reasons. The Synod is expanding up to 96 seats from 60.There's a brand -new proportional voting system and the polls suggest we could be about to witness a fundamental shift in Welsh politics, with Plaid Cymru and Reform UK comfortably in the lead in the race to be the largest party.Any result like that would be significant because it would end more than a century of Labour Party dominance in Wales. They've won every major election here since 1922.However, the new voting system system makes things very unpredictable.

12:05

We're not expecting the results until later this afternoon, possibly well into the evening.

12:11

Thank you very much.Well, let's talk Scotland now, shall we?The SNP is projected to remain the largest party in government.Vanessa Dave has the latest from Holyrood.

12:23

Scotland's relationship with the rest of the UK is very much on the line.If the SNP win a majority here at Holyrood, they say they are going to put independence at the top of the political agenda. Now, of course, we can't rule out the rise of reform here. They're actually splitting that unionist vote that want to keep the SNP out. And, of course, all eyes will also be on Scottish Labour. How will the party's perceived poor performance in Westminster impact their chances here?

At the start of this campaign, the Scottish Labour leader, Anna Sarwar, called for the Prime Minister to go.At that time, he looked rather foolish, but if things don't go the party's way today, those calls could grow again.
